::MickeyMo "Well hi there everybody!"

Actually, not quite so mad, not even annoyed, just curious: when people say 'Proud To Be American', isn't that gross racism? A country shouldn't be representive, nothing should be! The term (I think) should be 'Proud To Be Me' :)

Take it extra easy :wave2:

I'm proud to be me and I'm proud to be an American, I'm also proud to be an honorary Brit :)

Aren't you proud to be English?? I think too many people in this world are becoming WAY too politically correct!!

Yes, I'm proud to be American. ::yes:: The same as I proud to be Irish and English as well!!

I'm proud to be me, proud to be an American, AND proud to be a Penn State Nittany Lion fan, even at 3-9!

I think I understand the question, but I don't think one is racists or elitist to be proud of their heritage. I'm proud to be an American because it's a great country and it's part of what I am. I'm not German, so I can't be proud of being German, but I certainly have no problem if a German is proud to be German. I don't think there's anything wrong with being proud of what you are, including American. What's wrong is thinking where you were born makes you better than someone else.

Side note: I'm of direct Irish decent and I'm proud to be Irish, but my ancestors got her in the mid-1800's. Am I really Irish? Nobody's given me the "honorary" title yet!

"American" is the the one true non racist nationality. Nowhere else in the the world do you have so many differant, and in some cases divergent, people who claim allegiance to one nation, government, and way of life. Yes we are not perfect, yes we make mistakes, yes we have bigots, but we will learn and hopefully teach others what we have learned in the past and what we will learn in the future.

As the old song says I quess I'm just a cockeyed optomist.

American is a race?

Richard, I think the correct term would be nationalism or jingoism . ;) America is one of the most racially diverse nations on the planet.

I think that most Americans take a deserved pride in the accomplishments of our nation in a scant 250 years. We created a political and economic system that has created the greatest prosperity in human history while adapting and changing to many incredible challenges such as slavery, civil rights, women's rights, immigation, handicapped people's rights, world wars, freeing millions from communist oppression, technology, etc. etc. And today we continue to debate abortion, gay rights, genetic engineering, terrorism etc.

Regardless of personal agenda people continue to participate in the process and respect the rights of others to participate without fear of being murdered or imprisioned. It is certainly not a perfect system, but very attractive as evidenced by the millions of people trying to get here every year.

Being the biggest guy on the block we are kind of in a no win situation. If we interfere with others we are blamed for imperialism, if we ignore them we are blamed for indifference

I think that most Americans genuinely wish all others to experience the same happiness and freedom. Sometimes we are not successful in helping, but I do not see any grand American conspiracy. I admit that I am not cynical about the country and as an educated white male I enjoy most of its perks, but it is my experience in working with those less fortunate that people just want a fair chance. I pray and work regularly to see that that is just what happens in this country. After all, why would you fight a war if you could go to Disney World :D

Maybe you would get more response on the debate board. Many people have no idea how we are perceived overseas.

Best Wishes,

David

don't start trouble where there don't need to be none!!
and I'm proud to be an american
where at least I know I'm free

I am proud to be me , but I am also proud to be a lot of other things including American.

I am proud to be a mother and wife.

Even if one's nationality was considered a "race" (which, by the way, it is not), being proud of your country or your race certainly isn't racism.

While one is proud to be who they are - whether it be American, African-American, Irish, Swedish, whatever - does not in any way indicate that they feel they are the best, and all others are beneath them.

We're proud to be Americans. I'm proud to be me. I'm proud of our lifestyle here, our open arms to those who come to live here and prosper, and I'm proud to be free. And I wish all those blessings on everyone.

So....no. There's no racism in that.

But it was certainly food for thought, thank you.

P.S. I had a wonderful weekend in Brighton once, and I would be proud to be from there also! Awesome city! I'm reminded of it everytime I venture to my living room - where all sorts of goodies I picked up there are displayed.

I'm proud to be an American and also proud to be a DISer!

I have always considered myself an American because I am a citizen of the United States of America. Even though I am of Polish, French, Scottish, English and Welsh descent. My next door neighbor immigrated to this country from Iran and a couple years ago he became a citizen of this country. He proudly tells everyone that he is an American. So, no I don't consider myself to be a racist when I say that I am proud to be an American.

I'm proud to be an American
where at least I know I'm free,
And, I won't forget the men who died
and gave that right to me.
And I'll gladly stand up
next to you and defend her still today.
Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land...
God Bless the U.S.A.!

I think the proper term here is "ethnocentric"--thinking that one's own group is superior. However, that tends to have a negative connotation like "Racist".
However, I would assert that most of us here don't have our pride in the USA because of a feeling of superiority. I just think of our constitution, etc. and the freedoms we have and that our soldiers continue to fight for (in many locations, not just Iraq) and that's where a lot of my pride comes from.

I'm proud to be an American, and if you said you were proud to be English, well good for you!

 I hate the overboard political correctness

If tomorrow all the things were gone,
I'd worked for all my life,
and I had to start again
with just my children and my wife,
I'd thank my lucky stars, to be living here today,
'cuz the flag still stands for freedom,
and they can't take that away!

There ain't no doubt, I love this land,
GOD BLESS THE U.S.A!

Gross racism? Dear God, where did you get that idea?? I don't want to start anything here, but I gotta say that my family is only one of hundreds of thousands of families whose loved ones went off to an unknown land to protect our freedoms. Those freedoms include our right to remain PROUD to be American and your right to express your opinion, however unpopular that may be to me.

I dont get the racism part of it... I just can't see it.

I was born in America, I am a citizen of America, and darn proud of it....

The same would go if I lived in Bali, Zimbabwe, Argentina, China, New Zealand...etc.

Dh's good friends all over Europe don't understand us either... but thats A-Ok with me, I have my opinion you have yours :)

Ahhhh the land of the free :)

Political correctness has run amok.

No it's not racist. Ethnocentric I could see being bad (looking down on other countries) but there is nothing wrong in taking pride in your country no matter what country that is. I take pride in my home and want it to be comfortable and look nice. Is that racist. America is the home of millions of people who are proud of it and because of that pride America is the wonderful country it is. No it's not perfect but what is? And I dont think people should be judgemental unless the are educated enough on the subject.

P.s. I am proud to be American, Irish, and me. And if anyone takes offense they need to lighten up.

doesn't this thread belong on the debate board!!!!!!!!!!!??????????
