Racing to Lose a Toenail ~ My Half-Marathon Weekend *Homeward Bound 3/16 p.25

Last year we made the mistake of going back to the room and taking naps. After that we were done because we became so stiff and sore. You were smart to go the park and walk. It looked like such a pretty day. The carousel of progress was one of Walt Disney's first animatronic (sp?) attractions, so I love to watch it and think how far they've come from that first one. The tune does stick with you for awhile. Thanks for sharing.:thumbsup2

What a great day! I love that you continued with things you hadn't done before (half, CoP etc). I think I know what's coming since I'm lurking on other tr's but can't wait to hear how it was to be a cheerleader too!

Wow, that was a long day.
You can get frozen cokes at Burger King.

WHAT a DAY!! I think if I were to train for a half, I'd have to reward myself with MORE Disney days to reward myself!! I hope you can even walk your next day!! I know that in both the 5Ks I've done, I could hardly walk for DAYS afterwards. So, 2 days to lay around the pool and THEN hit up the parks would be ideal. I'm sad to see you go so soon.

BTMRR at night is so GREAT!!!!! I love it, and your'e right, it's a completely different experience!:thumbsup2

Great update! I'm glad you got to try some of those never before done attractions. I still haven't done Stitch and i don't know if I ever will. Glad you liked the cheesesteak! I just love the simplicity of the Plaza plus the view:goodvibes I know what it feels to walk around the parks after a long race. Very tiring. It all kind of blends together. I can't wait to hear about the cheerleading. (I want my cameo)

That was the Coney Island dog and it was sooooooo good!

We had a fun and productive time at MK despite being tired! :)

Whoa. I probably would have wanted to crash, but when you're in Disney, you HAVE to get the most out of it. And you did! :cool1:

We really wanted to take a nap. :rotfl: But, I think knowing we had so little time in WDW gave us that push to get out and enjoy as much as we could.

It was a great day. :goodvibes This entire trip was all about firsts and doing things I never thought I would. :thumbsup2

Wow, that was a long day.
You can get frozen cokes at Burger King.

You can also get them at Target. I wonder if they'll be as good!

Stairs were definitely the worst and getting up and down. And I remember we sat down for dinner the Plaza, but didn't sit back down again until we rode BTMR. I was so ready for bed that night. If I do a half-marathon trip again, I would definitely want to stay for longer. I'd plan to arrive a day or so before the race, but then stay for close to a week afterwards. At the moment I'm kind of thinking of doing that in 2013, but we'll see.

Stitch is just a really weird attraction. Your cameo is coming up! :thumbsup2

That's it!

We did.

Whoa. I probably would have wanted to crash, but when you're in Disney, you HAVE to get the most out of it. And you did! :cool1:

Exactly - especially since we were only there for 2 nights.

I don't know how you went to the MK after running. :worship:
Love your bling!

Because if I didn't, I wouldn't have been able to visit MK on this trip. That was good motivation. ;)

That bling you are sporting sure looks nice in front of the castle! :thumbsup2

Both the Asian Chicken Salad and the hot dog look delicious!

Frozen Cokes at Disney are the best! My kids love them!

So glad you loved the MSEP! You know my feelings about it!

I was getting hungry at that point so I went over to the food court and picked up the Asian Chicken Salad. I had been eyeing the picture of it in the elevator and couldn't wait to try it.

It was so good!

I have not tried this. Maybe this trip.

Something to be very proud of. :thumbsup2

My goal on this trip was to see/do as many new attractions as I could - new to me anyway.

I think everyone should try everything for themselves and not just go on other people's reviews. Everyone has different tastes, and even if you end up not liking it, you know that firsthand and experienced it for yourself.

I listened to it often as a young girl. I assumed it was from a movie. Liz said the only movie related to the Country Bears came out a few years ago. As we entered the theater, I realized the album was a recording of this very attraction at WDW. I had no idea! This made me really excited to see the show and I knew every song. :goodvibes

Cute story.

And with that, we were done for the day. We were exhausted and a certain someone was having difficulty walking. (Yeah, it was me.) So back to the room we headed for some much needed shut eye.

The fact that you were able to do anything and walk anywhere after the race is good.

While we were waiting to get into Country Bears Jamboree I mentioned to Liz that I used to have an album of the Country Bears.

Around this time, Liz was texting back and forth with our friend Joe (the one who went on ToT with me). We were planning on meeting up for the Electrical Parade and Wishes. Liz and I were going to try and fit in the Enchanted Tiki Room, but decided we should head over and save our spots for the parade. Joe's daughter was also with him and soon Augie showed up. Liz had met them both at the Wine and Dine half-marathon. We all just chatted about the race and other stuff.

The parade was great! I thought it was pretty equal to Spectromagic and I loved the music. :goodvibes

After the parade was over, we decided to all walk over to Fantasyland and watch Wishes from a different perspective - behind the castle. Joe had some Mickey Vision glasses that he was sweet enough to share with us.

It made different colored Mickey Heads out of the fireworks. It was so cool! :cool2:

We had to get a group shot before we parted ways for the night:

I had the same album as a kid, if I sang I think I could do the whole show from memory even today.:rolleyes1 I had the same reaction the first time I did Country Bears, it's the same as the album:cool1:. I will be visiting them again next week.

It was a lot of fun watching the the parade and fireworks with all of you.

I'm enjoying your recap of WDW Marathon weekend.

I think that CoP was the first thing we did on our first visit to MK on our 2001 and 2009 trip...when we came out of it in '09 we said, "why do we keep doing this?" :rotfl2:

I've never heard of Mickey Vision glasses. Sounds interesting.

And I have yet to ride BTMRR in the dark....that needs to go on the list.

WOW! What an accomplishment! I loved reading the TR and the posts leading up to it. I just couldn’t put ya down. Congratulations! Your story has been very inspiring! :goodvibes

Yes, I do! I had no idea what to expect since I admit I hadn't done much reading about it. I loved it. :thumbsup2

I have not tried this. Maybe this trip.

You should! So delicious! I had it another time before I left. ;)

:welcome: Joe! :cool1: Glad you stopped by. So funny that you had the same album! We could sing duets! :rotfl: Thanks for sharing the pictures of what is seen through the mickey vision glasses. :thumbsup2 Did you hold them over the camera?

I'm sure CoP is a great attraction on a hot, hot day. :rolleyes1

I dream about that chicken salad sometimes. So yummy.

Yes! So good.

LOVE the bling! You totally deserved to show that off! :thumbsup2

It was fun. And there were some pretty cool moments the next day wearing our bling. :thumbsup2

:welcome: Jennifer! Thanks so much for reading and commenting. Maybe someday soon you'll be writing your own TR about a similar experience. :thumbsup2

Before I continue on with day 3, I need to back up a little bit. First off, I forgot to post a picture of the sign Liz made at the expo and that we put in our window after the race:

IMG_0652.jpg

Second, I totally flaked on mentioning an important bit of information that pertains to the title of this TR. :rolleyes1 While I was doing the half, my toes were bothering me. This was a new kind of pain, but I figured that's what happens when you run/walk 13.1 miles! When I got back to the room, I took my shoes and socks off and took a gander at my feet. The same toe on each foot had a blackened nail. Suddenly, all of the discomfort made sense! :rotfl: Runners know that with long distance comes the possibility of losing a toenail. I felt like I was in the big leagues now! For a few weeks after the race, I had a blister that kept forming under my left toenail. The worst time was a day after I got home from WDW. It was really uncomfortable to walk on. I finally decided I needed to do surgery and got out my needle. I'll spare you the rest of the details, but I'm still dealing with two bad toenails that will probably fall off at some point. So, there you have the reason for this title.

Now, on with the show...

Liz and I woke up Sunday morning bright eyed and bushy tailed. We slept great. We had plans to head to Animal Kingdom to ride Expedition Everest (another first for me) and cheer on our friend, Jenny (dismagiclover) who was running her first marathon. :cheer2: Liz and Jenny are friends in real life and I became friends with Jenny here on the Dis thanks to Liz. This was going to be the first time we'd meet in person. :goodvibes

I remember Liz was checking her phone right after we woke up to see where Jenny was in the race. We talked about how nice it was to be the ones all cozy in bed while others had been up for the race a few hours ago. ;)

I got my shower first and headed over to the food court to get breakfast for both of us while Liz got ready. It was another beautiful day, but a bit cooler than the day before. I was glad because that would make it easier on the marathoners.

We headed to the bus stop and made our way to the Kingdom. We got to see marathoners out running on the way. It was so exciting and our thoughts kept going to Jenny and wondering how she was doing and what she was feeling.

Decorations were still up!

IMG_0658.jpg

Jenny was going to call Liz when she was entering Animal Kingdom so we'd know when to start looking for her. We figured we had time to do a few rides so we hit Kilimanjo Safaris first. There must have been some animals in the road beause when we were close to boarding, everything just stopped for a while and we had to wait a bit.

Finally, it was our turn. I actually brought my camera this day so I took some pictures.

After our adventure catching the poachers, it was time to make our way to the big event of the day (well, one of the two big events). It was time to once again face my fear and ride Expedition Everest! :scared1:

The wait wasn't long at all and before we knew it, it was time. I was a little nervous, but I had been much more fearful of riding Tower of Terror. My main concern wass that the backwards part would make me feel sick.

I enjoyed the ride. The backwards part wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't in the dark, but I survived. I was a bit dizzy during that part, but it wasn't too bad. I can't say I loved it and can't wait to do it again, but I can now say I've been on all the coasters at WDW. :cool1: I'll do EE again with Sully, but I'm not excited about it like I am going on ToT again. :goodvibes

Liz rednecked this for us:

L34.jpg

Right outside of EE was the course for the marathoners. We decided it was time to turn ourselves into cheerleaders.

Up Next - We Become Cheerleaders

Love the redneck picture! :)

The toenails sound painful...UGH! So sorry that happened and you're still dealing with it. No pain, no gain? :confused3

That update is such a tease to me! I want my cameo:laughing: Though I do appreciate the kind thoughts you were both throwing my way! I was doing great so I must have felt them:hug: I'm glad you did Expedition Everest! That is a great ride. Another one that is the perfect blend of theming and thrills! Now get to writing that next updatepopcorn::
