I was thinking it would be fun to volunteer for the 5k during marathon weekend next year-- we are dong Goofy so the 5k is my only chance. Obviously on race day you have to get there early but how much time do you need to spend prior to that. Are there lots of training/orientation sessions and what time are these held? Has anyone done volunteering at the med stations? I am an MD and thought this would be a cool thing to do but am not sure about the timing.. any info would be appreciated.

Good question. I have no answer and wonder if most of those who would know are still coming back from the Princess.

I would think to call DIsney sports or Track Shack about volunteering as an MD at a med tent. Don't know any WISHer that has done that. The only one that has come close is JimB who volunteers as a bike medic.
For water stations the training is on the spot and most of us that have done races, you pretty much have the experience you need. They have you set up tables, put cup sout and pour. then you are to yell out what you have like Powerade or Water. Have gloves on whenever touching the cups at all and thats pretty much it. For the 5K in Jan I only saw one water stop that works two sides of the course. I had to be at Volunteer checkin near the Poly for the full right before 5am and I was at mile 11. Done around 9:45am.

Not sure if any of that helps you, but I tried.

Kristi and I will be starting up the January 2010 WDW Marathon Weekend Volunteers effort soon. :thumbsup2

jbucci: Great that you could be a med volunteer!

Everyone: Remember there are all sorts of volunteer options, not just water stops.

I'll be down in Sept, and was thinking about volunteering at that one. Never been to such an event, let along volunteering at one. I'd figured I live it thru others, and maybe in the next year do it myself (just as a fast walker!).

Any more info out there on volunteering for that, hints, advice, etc?

Or, any threads that I've missed?

ThankS:woohoo:

I don't know if any WISHers volunteered for Everest last year. I don't remember seeing a thread on it.

Hopefully, if someone who did volunteer sees this thread, they will be in touch with you!

Thanks Kristi1357! I'll keeping watching the boards!

BTW... of the 6 individuals who have posted here, 4 are from Province/State beginning with "New"... and one of the other 2 mentions New Orleans in her Tag! Coincidence? or plain scary? heehehe

clearly volunteering is the "new" cool thing to do...

ok, not worth posting the pun but I couldn't resist...

anyone know when they start getting volunteers for marathon weekend in Jan?

I don't rememer when I signed up to volunteer during marathon weeked, Maybe Oct/Nov sometime. Usually someone gives us the heads up when its getting closer.

Kristi and Judy coordinated our efforts last year and did a great job:thumbsup2. Jim and I volunteered at the full - water stop red # 2 with a bunch of WISHers and we had a great time. We chose an early stop so that we would be done in plenty of time to scream team, but there are all kinds of shifts available. Disney hasn't opened up the volunteer sign-up yet, but when they do Kristi and Judy will post and help anyone who wants to do it.
