Go WISHers, Go!

Chad & I might do the Santa Fund 5k in Nashua on Sunday morning.
We did this race last year and it was fun. We will decide tomorrow and just sign up Sunday morning if we can find a sitter for Zack. I am not sure if it's a good idea for me with this cough though.

Just got back from Raleigh's City of Oaks Half where our own Jeanne (jeanneg) kicked my butt, mopped up the floor with me, left me in the dust -- You feel me? I am in complete and total awe -- That lady can WALK! It was so good to see a WISHer -- and to trade encouragement along the way. Can't wait for her report! Big congrats, Jeanne! Hope John did just as well!

Wendy & Jeanne - Congrats on your finish today. I wore my WISH visor, but since I was stuck handing out Gu at mile 22 I couldn't see any of the Half runners. I was cheering for you from miles away anyway!

Jackie

Thanks, Jackie....and everyone else for the pre-event well-wishes.

I finally got to meet Wendy. She's a great lady, but she lies. She whooped my butt and she's just being nice about it!

John did extremely well for someone who I seriously thought might not even make it. He had a 3:13 finish with an overall 14:45 pace. This is the man who trains at about a 16:30! Thanks for asking.

And thanks to Jackie for volunteering. I thought it was very well organized for a small inaugural race - especially after last week's fiasco at TofT. All the volunteers were awesome......very nice and encouraging. Food at the end was great also.....I hope you got some.

Congrats Wendy and Jeanne - WISH I could have been there with you! I look forward to meeting you in December!!

I didn't get this race on the schedule because it was close to last minute for me, but here goes.

I did the Rocky Raccoon 25K Trail Race on Saturday held in the state park grounds in Huntsville, Texas.

The weather was great being cool, but not cold in the early hours; later it was sunny without being too warm. It was my first trail race and 6 days after my half marathon in Houston, so I took it easy and ran about 15 minutes a mile goal pace. There were 3 well stocked aid stations and 3 water only stations throughout the course. I finished in approximately 3:46:09.

The race seemed well run and very popular among the racers present. Several I talked to discussed how the race has improved over the years.

Congratulations Jeanne, John, Wendy and Richard!

I did the Dallas Half Marathon Sunday morning with my friend, Cindy, who lives in Dallas. This race is actually a warm-up for the Dallas White Rock Marathon in early December. I'm guessing there were probably close to 5,000 participants. The course was nice - all around the White Rock lake. From what I understand, it was the "best" of the course for the WR Marathon. The support along the way was quite good and hamburgers and other goodies were served at the finish.

At the start, the temperature was in the low 60's and it was a little muggy outside. By the time we finished, the temp was in the high 70's and the sun was blazing hot. I got rather uncomfortable in the race early on. I just don't handle the heat well and am quite worried about the marathon in January. I'm so hoping we will have cooler temps.

This was my second half-marathon in 2 weeks with the ToT in between. I enjoyed the Nike Women's half, did okay in ToT, and finished the Dallas half but I don't feel I did well in it and I just really didn't enjoy it. Cindy felt the same way. And, I was missing my DIS team! ;) My legs and feet felt like lead during the last 3 miles. It was really a struggle to keep them moving. How am I ever going to complete a marathon if the half is a such a struggle?!! Ugh! ;)

Ok, I know I'm whining. I'm tired. It's 1:30 am. I woke up because my feet were cramping. I'm sunburned. Waa, waa, waa! Oh, did I mention I did my best time yet? I completed the half in 2:59 (according to my Garmin). Approximately a 13:45 pace. All was not bad at the Dallas half. Next up, Tulsa half in 2 weeks! :woohoo:

WTG, Susie! Awesome pace! I too am worried about completing the full after how much I struggled with yesterdays last mile. The thought of finishing a half......and then having to do it all over again is daunting! But I plan to take it at a slower pace so I don't get tired. My goal is to finish without getting swept and I couldn't care less what the time is. Anyone who completes a marathon even once is amazing and I am hoping to be that.
There was a nice story in the Raleigh News and Observer today about the lady who came in last in the full marathon yesterday. Her gun time was 7:00:04 (although I'm sure her chip time was several minutes less) She is a 50year-old schoolteacher and this is her 24th full marathon in 6 years. Her goal was to do 25 by age 50. She's just a tad behind schedule but has only one more to do. Here's a link: http://www.newsobserver.com/lifestyles/food_fitness/story/760824.html
I just thought it was nice that they gave so much coverage to the last place finisher for a change.

Good job everyone!:thumbsup2

I ran the inaugural City of Manchester Half Marathon Sunday morning. It was a perfect day for a race with a start time temp of 43 warming to 53 by the finish. There was a little wind during some points in the course, but overall not to bad. The course seemed to be either running up hill or down hill with very few flat miles. You can see this in my splits.

One thing was that there was no MP3 players allowed. If you were spotted with one you were DQ'd and your results would not be posted. Which kind of affected me as I use my Nike+ for my pace.

I had set a goal of 1:44:59 and my pacing strategy was the first few miles would be around 8:20 then I would try to hold 8:00 for the next 9 miles then give it all I could for the last 5k of the race. Well, I soon realized I need to take time whenever I could.

This race was gun timed, not net timed so the clocked started as soon as the siren went off. I started my watch then instead of when I crossed the actual starting line. I probably only took me about 5 seconds or so to cross.

Splits
Mile 1 - 8:32:08 right about on pace
Mile 2 - 8:20:92 right on pace
Mile 3 - 8:12:41 still on pace, but need to make up some time
Mile 4 - 8:00:37 on pace, but thinking I need to make up time.
Mile 5 - 8:02:31 right on pace, still worried about making up the 60 seconds
Mile 6 - 7:21:49 downhill almost all the way, made up some time though

At this point I start doing the math, I knew I needed 8 minute miles so a little multiplying 7 x 8 = 56 minutes when I hit mile 7. This went on until mile 12.

Mile 7 - 8:45:17 - (57:13) all uphill there goes the time I just made
Mile 8 - 7:47:35 - (1:05:01) only 61 seconds off
Mile 9 - 7:57:26 - (1:12:58) down to 58 seconds off
Mile 10 - 7:34:46 - (1:20:32) I pushed hard here, maybe too hard
Mile 11 - 7:47:60 - (1:28:20) 20 seconds to go
Mile 12 - 8:04:66 - (1:36:25) Uphill and it sucked the life out of me

So I'm trying to do the math and realize I need a 8:34 for my goal for the last 1.1 miles.

Mile 13 & .1 - I forgot to hit the split button at the mile marker, the last mile was a downhill grade though it was into the wind. I made the final turn and when I could see the clock it read 1:43:xx. I knew I had sub 1:45 and now wanted sub 1:44. I know I was being greedy.

Final 1.1 - 7:37.25 Woo hoo.

My watch said 1:44:02 official results were 1:44:04. I think on a net timed race I would have been sub 1:44.

I finished 116 out of 816 and 14 of 60 in my 35 - 39 age group. I had a great time and it was a fun race.

I ran the Banff Winterstart 5 mile night time run on Saturday night. This was not a chip timed event - in fact - I don't even know if it was net timed or not. We started off at 7 pm and this race was completely in the dark. There wasn't too much of an opportunity to pass people as it was so difficult to see, so myself and my friend Debbie just ran and attempted to have a good time. It was flat for the first 1.5 miles, then went uphill all the way to the turnaround, then back the same route to the finish. We finished up at 51:30 (maybe minus a second or two). It was cool outside, but not too bad, and no snow out either. After the race there was a post party in the parking lot of the host hotel with grub (which I didn't get any of because the lines were too long) and every participant got 2 beer tickets.

I think I've learned that my stomach does not like night time races so I don't know how many more of these I'll be doing.... But it was a fun night with friends.
