Well I was toying with whether or not to come to the Expo on Friday, but this I think will weigh in favor of doing it. Unless I am falling asleep on the way home. I'll have my DP in tow, looking miserable. =)

Good luck everyone. Todd, let me know how the Martian is. I still need a Michigan half and that one is on my short list of 3 along with the Capital City River run in Lansing and the one in Grand Rapids.

Thank you for the good wishes! It really put a smile on my face to see this thread. This will be my 2nd race ever so I'm excited and nervous. I'm at the stressing about weather and clothing stage! :lmao:

The swing back down in temperature has me slightly concerned as well.

So after spending 2 days volunteering with race prep (It's best to blow up martians while holding their neck--but don't overinflate their head or their brains will blow!), I decided to just set the alarm for 6:30, get up and check the weather. If it was raining and snowing, as forecast, then I would stay home. If nice, I would go run the Martian Half in Dearborn. It was nice, and so I went.

The Good
I saw both Susan (mousemgr2) and Todd (jeanigor) at the expo and at the race.
I had the pleasure of finding Todd on the course and walking/running him in to the finish. And putting the medal round his neck (while nearly knocking off his glasses)
The weather was good-30's at the start, 40's at finish. On the edge for tights for me, which is what I wore.
Since I am in taper mode for Boston, my plan had me doing 13 miles at marathon pace (8:45). I decided that I wanted to race, though. So I started out around 8:20 and decided to make this race an experiment--could I go faster than my previous PR, which was on this course. Spent first half running around 8:18 and felt pretty good.
Didn't stop running at all--even for my one Gel (normally would do 2, but only had 1 at home)
Placed 3rd in my age group again and got a glass for it

The Bad:mad:
The medal--while a cool silhouette-- is less hefty than last year and on a plain lanyard (yes--I am a race bling person). Minor.....but not the following

This is not a new race. But every year for the last few, things seem to be tweaked. This year it was the start line-fine, no problem. But it appears that they didn't adjust the half turnaround point (which I learned by talking to one of the race staff). Now I had my Garmin set to just show average pace, not distance. But at some point a few people on the course commented on how the splits in the second half of the race seemed off. I thought the usual--running the tangents, etc. I was runnig well--faster in the second half of the course and figured I had my time from last year beat by 2 minutes+. Crossed the finish line and was blown away to see that I finished 34 seconds SLOWER than last year. Chatting up runners who all consistently showed 13.5 miles on their Garmins--mine was 13.51. So my official time was 1:50:53. My Garmin says I averaged 8:13 minute/mile--which is almost 15 seconds per mile faster than this race last year, but the record will show my pace as 8:28.

I came home and uploaded my data and my time through 13.1 miles was 1:47:50, which is 2-1/2 minutes faster than my previous PR. But it's the PR that will never offically be.

The Ugly
Not that I had it on my list or anything, but had I run in 1:47:50----or even 1:48 something considering the usual course slop, I would have automatically qualified to run New York Marathon. The QTfor a half for 50+ is 1:50. So I am sorta, kinda miffed.

So trying to end on a positive note.....I kicked butt! And I am hopeful that my Boston race goes well. I have not set any time goals for it--it is Boston, and the course has some killer hills. But I feel pretty good about being able to hold my pace for a while.

Thanks for reading.....

Maura

UPDATE The race acknowledged an error in length and have posted the results for 13.4 miles. A revised time for 13.1 may be forthcoming, although I don't know if that will be recognized externally.

Maura: That is fantastic and horrible!!! I am thrilled with your unofficial time, but it's really sad what their lack of organization has just cost you!

But, yes, you did kick some serious butt!!!:cheer2:

Wow Maura! You rock!!!

Today was the More Magazine Women's Half Marathon. The race took place in Central Park. This was my 2nd race ever - the Disney Half was my first. I finished Disney in 2:44:15 which is an average speed of 12.31 min/mile. I'm very new to this whole running thing and I was happy with my time. I felt like I trained more consistently after Disney so I was hoping to run a little faster today. As a side note, due to childcare and work considerations I've done almost all of my training on a treadmill. This means I don't know exactly how fast I'll run when I don't have a pre-set pace.

First comment. I didn't really know what to expect for this race. Disney does corrals by letter so I knew that I was towards the back but not last (I was corral F). This was by color so I wasn't sure where I'd be. As it turns out I was in the last color before the walkers. I got up at 5am, got ready and walked the 3/4 miles to the train station. The bag check wasn't conveniently located to the start and I was afraid to use it so I carried/wore everything. It was in e low 40s and I was a bit chilly. I took the train to Grand Central and met another runner. We both took advantage of the indoor plumbing before sharing a cab to the start. We were both a bit cold but it was otherwise a beautiful, sunny day.

They didn't do a wave start so once the earlier corrals were off, we started. Based on my stopwatch vs. Race time, I think I crossed the start about 12 min behind the front runners. The race was 2+ laps around Central Park. I was just under 12 min/mile pace from the 1st mile. I had heard about the BIG hill around mile 4/11 but wow! My treadmill had not prepared me for that (although everyone seemed to walk that hill, especially the 2nd time!). I do walk-run and maintained 2 min Running/1 min walking for most of the race (big hill excepted). After 2 hours it was still hilly so I did some 1 min running/1 min walking until it flattened out again and then I resumed 2:1.

I saw Amy from the DIS which was awesome. My DH and kids were right at mile 13 with signs. I finished in 2:36:41 which is 11:58 min/mike. I was so happy thati could improve so much in just a few months! It was definitely inspiring. The weather was lovely - at the finish it was in the mid 50s.

I thought the race was organized pretty well. One depressing thing is that the winner lapped us around mile 4!!! The race t-shirts were nothing special and the medal, while nice enough, lacked the Disney flare.

Amanda

Amanda Congrats on your great race and new PR! And kudos for adjusting your race pace during the race when you needed to. That's great that you adjusted to the race and how you felt.

Maura

Amanda - Great job. Glad you enjoyed yourself and getting a PR to boot.
Maura - Good job at the race. I don't know what I would have done if my race would have been long. I had left almost all of it on the course. I could see the finish line and couldn't "sprint" to it.

Me
Ran the ORRRC Half Marathon in Xenia. It is a low cost ($25 early registration), half marathon close to where my brother and sister live so I combined the race with visiting
I was a beautiful spring morning. Really couldn't have asked for much better weather. It was a little cold at the start so wore my running pant until just before the start. Tom(flatft.runner), noticed me milling around when he came out of the Y, I'm kinda hard to miss is a group of runners.

The First 2 miles are through Xenia and mostly flat. Very few standup clocks and I missed several miles so using garmin distances.

Mile 1 12:56
Mile 2 13:03

Leaving town, we hit the largest incline section through Miles 3 and 4.

Mile 3 13:25
Mile 4 13:00

The next 5 miles are out on a rail/trail. Mostly flat to slightly uphill. During this section was keeping pace ,slowing gaining, another run/walk person who was doing the full.

Mile 5 12:58
Mile 6 12:36

Race results show a 6 mile split of 1:19:12 (13:12 pace).

Mile 7 12:33
Mile 8 12:37

Mile 8 was the turnaround and back to the start (avoiding miles 3,4 where the hills were).

Mile 9 13:08
Mile 10 12:46
Mile 11 12:51
Mile 12 12:45
Mile 13 13:03
Mile 13.26 (Per Sports Tracks) 3:17 (12:45 pace)
Overall Garmin Pace 12:54
My Garmin itself shows 13:17 miles and a 13:00 pace.

Overall Race results
2:51.02, 13:04 pace.
Prior PR was 3:07:42 set in Columbus last October. A PR of over 16 Minutes. In 11 months, I've cut 37 minutes off my half marathon time.

After the race, they had soup, homemade cookies, bananas, and apples to eat.

All in all, a good race with good organization. Very different than the prior half marathons I've done. Columbus and Cleveland are both large city races with numbers in the 1,000's. This race had 600 or so half marathoners and a little over 100 full marathoners. Both types of races are fun in their own way.

Jeremy Yeah! So glad for you and your new PR. And looks like you negative split your race--so you were running strong. Congrats on a great effort.
