Race Reports/Encouragement/Kudos for May 3rd and 4th

Great job Matt.

Hope everyone else participating this weekend has a great time. (Literally and figuratively.)

I forgot to post that I was running the 2008 Broad Street Run in Philly today. Below is the race report...

2008 BROAD STREET RUN

Today I completed my first Broad Street Run. This is a pretty popular race in Philadelphia and for years I have always wanted to run it but didn’t think I could handle the 10-mile run down Broad Street. Now that I’ve run a number of races over 10 miles within the past year, including 2 marathons, I was more excited then worried about running this race. The goal was to try to finish in under 75 minutes (1:15:00) for a 7:30 pace. Pretty aggressive but since I ran a 7:50 pace at a 20K 2 weeks ago I figured this was doable.

The Course – The course for this race is about as “straight forward” as you can get. You basically park your car in the Stadium Complex parking lot in South Philly and take the Broad Street subway north to the Olney Station. The course is 10 miles straight down Broad Street from around Olney to the Philadelphia Navy Yard.

The crowds were pretty nuts. They announced that there were over 22,000 runners this year and they had bid numbers that went as high as 25,000. When I got out at Olney it was 7:45AM, 45 minutes before the 8:30AM start. I made a beeline over to the porta-potties which had some insane lines. Managed to find a somewhat reasonable line and made it to my starting area around 8:15AM. You basically line up according to your expected pace by the honor system. I decided to try the 7-minute mile pace group. The announcer said next year they are going to corrals because of the size of the crowds.

The weather was kind of hard to figure out. It was completely overcast at the start time and there was a lot of dew in the air. However, the temps felt like they were in the low 50’s so I decided to lose the sweat pants and go with shorts, a long sleeve shirt, and a short sleeve shirt over top. I regret not ditching the long sleeve shirt as it started to get a little warm around Mile 4 but I stuck it out.

About 5 minutes before the start I saw some security guards trying to make there way through the crowd. I though that maybe a star was going to be running the race next to me but it turned out to be Philly’s new Mayor Michael Nutter. I got to shake the Mayor’s hand which was pretty cool. He’s a very nice guy and has done a great job in the short time he has been in office. He didn't run the race although he said he would train for it next year.

The race started at 8:30AM sharp. The first mile was a little tough trying to deal with the large crowd but I ended up with a decent split due to the fact that it was mostly downhill. For the most part Broad Street is pretty flat and dead straight with the exception when it passes through City Hall. I basically focused straight ahead for the entire race and ran pretty consistent splits between 7:00 and 7:30. I ended up popping a PowerBar Gel early, around Mile 2, because I was feeling a little sugar rush and figured I would need the boost to maintain the pace. It worked. With the exception of the humid and slightly warm temps I felt great the entire race.

I have worked near City Hall my entire life so it’s always cool to run through Center City. It was also the first time I have run through my old South Philly neighborhood since I moved out of the city in 2003. I even had a brief glimpse of my old apartment at Broad & Shunk Street around Mile 8. That was kind of nice although I don’t miss the place...just the food.

It was really a pretty nice race for me. I got a little tired around Mile 9 but kept up my pace all the way into the Navy Yard and the finish line. DW, DS9, and DD& were all waiting just pass the finish line which was nice. DS and DW ran a kids 1-mile race inside of the Navy Yard and had their medals on which was kind of neat. That was the first time either of them ran a mile and both made it without stopping.

I finished in 1:12:50 for a 7:14 pace so I was well under the goal time. My split times are below…

Time Distance Split time Split pace
0:07:08 1 7:08 7:09
0:13:54 2 6:45 6:46
0:21:04 3 7:09 7:10
0:28:14 4 7:09 7:10
0:35:30 5 7:16 7:16
0:42:33 6 7:03 7:04
0:49:47 7 7:13 7:14
0:57:16 8 7:29 7:29
1:04:45 9 7:29 7:29
1:12:17 10 7:31 7:32
1:12:51 10.08 0:33 7:16

Highlights
  • Well Organized – This is a great race and it’s sponsored by Blue Cross so they have a lot of money to support it. There was basically a fair atmosphere at the finish area with a lot of things for kids to do like moon bounces and rock climbing. They had plenty of freebies like caricatures (my kids had caricatures done for free).
  • Post Race Refrshments – Plenty of Philly soft pretzels, Gatorade, Powerade, and water to the finish along with lots of other goodies. The kids got basically the same stuff as the runners too.
  • 10-Mile PR – That was, by far, the fastest 10 miles I ever ran.
  • Fast Course – You can’t beat running a straight point to point 10-mile course that had only a couple of little turns in it. This is also about as flat a course as I have ever run and I’d even have to say that it was more downhill then uphill, considering the finish line is at sea level.
  • Crowds – The crowds were pretty nice for this course but with 22,000+ runner it was to be expected. There were a lot of people lined up along the course from Center City all the way to the Navy Yard.
Water – Plenty of water along the course and lots of volunteers.

Lowlights
Really can’t think of any.

For any of you that are within driving distance of Philly this is a race worth checking out.

We got a few folks in backround shots in the 5k. Sorry I didn't get any pics of any of the dis'ers during the 15k. I don't really know any of the dis'ers who were running, and didn't make it to the meet the other day. I don't have one of those spiffy lime green Dis running shirts, but I did my best and wore my own lime green shirt for the 15k. I would like to say thanks to the Dis'ers who stayed and cheered for everyone, ya'll were great, and we loved seeing you out there!!

The event staff made several shoutouts about the Dis.. that was neat.

2008 Long Branch Half Marathon

This morning I ran the Long Branch Half in Long Branch, NJ. I ran this race last year, so I was familiar with the course and logistics, which really helped. I honestly, had NO expectations going into this race, I was really just going out there to have fun and finish the race, since my training has not really been so good lately.

The weather at the start was OK....it was overcast and chilly. I decided to go with a long sleeve shirt, but I learned very quickly that that was a mistake! I got really hot by about mile 4, and was really wishing I had worn short sleeves, but oh well....I made it to the end!

The course starts right on the boardwalk by the ocean, which is nice, and winds through the towns of Monmouth Beach and Long Branch in a big circle before coming down the boardwalk for the last mile or so. Luckily, it wasn't too windy or that would have been bad! It isn't a very exciting course by any means, but as I told my DBF after the race, I don't think anything will ever be exciting after running the WDW marathon!

I started out great, but then my calf muscles started hurting at about mile one, so I had to stop a few times to stretch them out. By about mile 3-4, my muscles felt much better and I settled into my pace. The rest of the race, I actually felt great!!!

Because I hadn't done much training, I was wondering how long I would be able to keep up a pace of 10:40, which is what I was averaging over the first 7-8 miles. My longest run in the last two months was only 8 miles, and my weekday runs have been almost non-existent as well, but I just kept going and lucky for me I was able to keep the pace up.

My chip time was 2:22, which I was very happy with! Not even close to a PR for me, but I will take it!

Overall, it was a fun race. It is well organized and not a really huge crowd which I like. I definetely will do this race again in the future!

Matt--That is so awesome that you got to participate in the Mini while away. I think that is so cool! I hear the medal is awesome too! That is on my list of events to do at some point! Great job!

Lou--WOW! You are really fast! Great job on the Broad St. Run!

Heather--Great pictures from the Minnie! Looks like you guys had a great time too!

Lou--WOW! You are really fast! Great job on the Broad St. Run!
Laurie - Nice job on the Long Branch 1/2 despite the calf muscle problems.

I was torn between running the NJ Marathon or Broad St Run today. I decided to pass on the NJ Marathon because work has been hectic and I haven't had time to get in the super LRs. Long Branch is a nice city. I bet it was a nice day to run. I love the ocean up there. I may try to run the 1/2 or full next year.

Congratulations all!!

Matt: WTG with your race. I'm really impressed with the challenges you dealt with: no training, the out-and-back course, the heat, and no Body Glide! Your time was fantastic, and I really loved to hear that you had the opportunity to complete the Indianapolis 500 Mini Marathon "in advance" and that you got that cool-looking bling! :cool1:

Lou: First, thanks for the information about the Broad Street Run; we live in Pgh now, so it's a doable race for us and I enjoyed hearing the details. It sounds like it is well-organized (and will be even more so in the future, with the corrals) and has the kind of spectator support that would make it fun. Second, wow, what a pace you set. :worship: Third, the highlight section was very useful, and I loved that you took care to mention the post-race refreshments and the flat course. I think you've sold me on those two points alone. Fourth, have I mentioned your incredible pace, splits, and going under your goal time?? :thumbsup2

Heather: Thanks for sharing your pictures with us. It is the next best thing to being there. I loved hearing the shout-out to the DIS. Do you think you'll be getting one of those spiffy green shirts & signing up for more events? I hope so!! :cheer2:

Laurie: Thanks for the RR on a course you're familiar with. I liked hearing the details about how you felt on a run with very little training. It seems to me that you did very well, felt good, and that you're race ready for a half-marathon distance. That's great, and I admire you for it! :dance3: And I think your pace is just great, even if it's not a PR for you (hoping to get there someday).

Without completely repeating what I wrote in my blog, I had a great 5k race today! I finished 2:30 faster than my first 5k two weeks ago - and any race that finishes with Bomb Pops and free Lip Smackers is alright by me! :thumbsup2

Matt, WTG!!

Lou, great job! Yeah, I'd run for Philly pretzels, too!!

Laurie, great job despite everything!! That must've been a beautiful course to run!

Heather, I am off to look at your photos now.

Great job WISHERS!!

Great Job! to Matt, Lou, Laurie and Heather and anyone else who ran this weekend.

I did the NJ Marathon on Sunday which was the same course as Laurie's half. She did a great job describing the location and the weather. Overall I think the event was well done. There were plenty of volunteers, plenty of food and plenty of water and Gatoraide on the course. The locals were very friendly and supportive. The race was well organized. The only difference from the half was that you had to pass the half finish and complete another loop. They awarded very nice medals, pins, and finishers hats at the end of both races and had plenty of refreshments available to finishers.

Lou--I was supposed to do the NJ Marathon yesterday, but due to my lack of training, I decided to switch to the half....I was glad I did that...the two loop course would be very hard mentally for me! The half marathon is great! I will most likely end up doing it next year as well!

deekaypee--Thanks so much! I definetely was very happy with my time considering my training!

curiouser--WTG on your PR in your race!!

EPCOTDUDE--I am glad to hear you liked the race yesterday. I was thinking about you, and wondering how you did!

Laurie way to hang in there. I saw a few ladies with WDW marathon shirts on. I wondered if one was you. Glad to hear you enjoyed yourself and finished with such a good time. The weather was a blessing compared to how cold and windy it was Saturday afternoon.

Congrats to all the racers this past weekend!

Lou - Great job on the BSR. Glad you enjoyed the event. I worked it this weekend. We had over 22000 registered and there were 19,100+ finishers.
There were more female finishers than male.
I wish I knew you were running the event. I would have worn my WISH gear.

On race day I was in the lead pace car. It was amazing to look back when the gun went off and see nothing but heads bobbing up and down for as far as the eye could see.

Did you go to the Expo? If so, what did you think?

I love woking this event, but each year I'm glad when it's over. I worked about 65 hours over the last four days. I was ready for some sleep.

Hi Terri - I forgot to post that I was running this event on the boards. I wish I would have known that you were working the race because I would have tried to meet up with you.

That was my first BSR so I can't compare it to years past. I was impressed with the size of the event. 22,000 runners is bascially what you had at the Philly Marathon. It was a different crowd than the marathon. As my wife put it, "these are normal people not nuts like you that run marathons".

I thought the expo was pretty nice. You don't expect an expo for a 10-mile race. It was the first time I was inside that part of The Linc.

It had to be cool in the pace car. When you got close to City Hall it must have been amazing to look back and see 22,000 runners spread out over miles.

65 hours! That's a lot of work. The next Philly race for me will be the PDR in September. Are you running or working the PDR?

Lou

WTG everyone!
My RR is on my racing blog. You can get to it with the link b/low that says racing blog.

There are tone of pic.
