For once I get to cheer!

[runs out into the median]

WOOOOO WISHERS YEAH GO WISH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHH WOOOOOOOOOO!

What the heck- I'm doing the Sidney Lanier Bridge Run 5k on Saturday. There's a half on Sunday just down the road- I'm not doing that one! But, now I'm starting to worry that all the middle/back of the pack 5k runners will pick the half and it's going to be me and the high school track team huffing up and down (and then up and down again) this huge bridge! :rolleyes1

I'm trying not to stress about my time since I have no clue how fast to go. You know, go too fast up and you might keel over; go too fast down and you might roll all the way! I'm actually pretty paranoid about hills, and not big on heights, so this might have been a poor choice (were it not for the cute L/S t-shirt!)

I don't think I'll have access to the internet until Monday:scared1: , but I'll report back!

I'm going to read everyone's report later. I've got to post now and fly to work!

My DS(9) and I left Friday to do the night races at Myrtle Beach SC (part of the Myrtle Beach Marathon weekend, which now includes not only footraces, but also a trio of cycling events for folks of all abilities). We were registered for the 5K and the 1-mile Family Fun Run. The FFR was scheduled first, and is a contest between local schools to see how many folks per school they can get registered for the fun run. As such, it allows strollers, wheelchairs, grandparents with walkers and canes (I'm not kidding), toddlers, etc., etc. I loved the concept and the enthusiasm of all the schools participating, but because the course travels throughout Broadway at the Beach across bridges and through some narrow walkways, many times during the "race", we slowed to a shuffle or stopped altogether. There's also no cap on this race, so there were a LOT of people and we didn't start at the front. Don't get me wrong, though -- I loved the course! The race started at nearly sundown, so we enjoyed all the bright lights and lighted storefronts, we walk/ran across the floating bridges, and we were able to run together here and there when the course opened up on wider walkways.

Because the race started late, then was so congested -- especially at the finish, which took us through the shark tunnel in Ripleys Aquarium, then meandered around inside the aquarium a bit before coming out again to finish, then fed everyone BACK into the aquarium to pick up our free postrace Chick-Fil-a nuggets, fruit bowl, and drink -- we missed the start of the 5K altogether. In fact, we were so late getting through the massive crowd and back out that they'd already removed the cones along the 5K route, so we couldn't "catch up" even if we'd chosen too.

We had to return our 5K chips even though we didn't run the race, so we ended up running part of the route with the 5Kers anyway as they crossed the street and headed toward their stadium finish line. (Someone yelled "Cheaters!" at us, which I felt a bit guilty about, but we'd planned to duck off the course long before they turned into the stadium. I just wanted my son to get a chance to run with the crowd for a bit since he'd trained so diligently.) In another incident, after we'd left the course and headed for the stadium entrance, some 20-something girl yelled "Boo!" out her passenger car window at us -- I'm guessing because she was held up in the traffic jam caused by the traffic being stopped to let the 5Kers across the street. We were so close to her car that I turned and looked directly in her face, and she smiled and said "Hi" -- I think she thought she was being clever and funny. Fortunately, I don't think my son even noticed.

My son actually handled his disappointment quite well about not getting a 5K medal, and I helped him to frame it as a really good fun run that we chose to finish instead of the 5K. I also pointed out that we had no real control over the timing of the race -- and he'd performed very well. He got a great FFR shirt (two actually, because we ended up with two kid's shirts and I won't be wearing mine ;) ) and a certificate -- plus the meal and a very crowded peek at the aquarium. (I got two very nice tech shirts for the 5K we didn't do, since they were out of kids shirts, so I'm not sure what I'll do with those -- I don't usually wear shirts for races I didn't do.) He also made it a point to tell everyone we met wearing a medal "Good job!" -- well, until I got tired of hearing him say, "Good job!" every second or so and asked him to stop for a while. (Bad, bad Mommie! ) I was very proud of him and told him so several times.

We had our celebratory meal at Margararitaville before heading for Charlotte where we caught up with the rest of the family at my daughters' swim meet. I don't think I've gotten more than 8 hours of sleep total since Thursday night, so I'm pretty beat -- and I have to go to work this morning.

This was the first year for the National Breast Cancer Marathon in Jacksonville. The race director was Jeff Galloway so there were a lot of Galloway groups. In fact, the pace groups even did R/W.

Packet pickup was Friday and Saturday. There was no race day pick up which made us spend Saturday night in Jacksonville. We only live 90 miles away so it would have been just as easy to drive up Sunday morning, pick up the packet and race. Especially since the race did not start until 8:30 am!

The expo was crowded and not the best lay out. The rows were very narrow and difficult to walk through. We got in and out very quickly because I did not want to fight through the rows.

The race village was set up at the Mayo Clinic. There was a family greeting area and then the racers area. Only racers could get into the racing area where they staged for the start. The start was on the main road. They did not have any water available in the racing area.

They were announcing to run at least 1 minute per mile slower then you anticipate finishing. We were marched out to the starting area at 8:15. By then the sun was fully up and the sky was cloudless. It was going to be a hot race. By Florida standards this was a tough race. It went over 2 bridges was were black ashphalt and then 4 miles on the beach. The beach part was nice because it was different, but it did not alllow for a fast time. Some parts were a little soft. Running on the beach is the reason they had a late start time, to get the low tide.

Because of our schedule, we had to be back in Daytona by 2:30, we could only run the 1/2. I'm okay with that because of the heat. This is the first 1/2 DS and I raced together so there was a lot of pride on the line. We stayed together for the first 7 miles and then it was time to run. He fell back a little and I never saw him again, until the end.

Final time for me was 2:12 and DS 2:27. My goal was under 2:00 but I had a slower start in the beginning so I could have a strong finish. I'm pleased with how I ran the race, but not thrilled with the time.

I talked to some of my group that did the full and they said the crowd support was great. Lots of people out cheering and with hoses. The course was good. One of our group was pulled from the course and is still in the hospital.

Feburary is a busy marathon month in Florida. I might give this one another try, especailly if they start it earlier. After running Chicago I don't like running hot marathons. :)

Congrats, Jim, to you and your son on what sounds like a pretty tough day to me! (I can handle hills better than heat -- and I don't care for either that much. :) )

Wendy - Sounds like a great race weekend in Myrtle Beach, but I'm so sorry your son didn't get to do his 5K (and that people were so RUDE about it!) Are you going to sign him up for another one soon so he can use all his training? I'm hoping for the Run for the Oaks on March 15 (if my ankle heals ok)- I did that last year and PR'd! Good for him for being so encouraging to all the finishers - you've obviously taught him well!

Jim - Why can't you Floridians turn down the heat in the winter? Great job on your time, especially with the beach running and the heat. As a Galloway runner, I really wanted to do this one, but couldn't afford to come back down there right after January. Maybe next year...
