I ran the Newport New, VA Toys For Tots 10k. It was a beautiful morning to run and I talked my husband and daughter into running the 5K. We had a blast and the race raises over $15,000 for Toys For Tots. My time was a new PR of 54.28. This beat my prior best by nearly two minutes. I was thrilled to win my age group...old lady category (55-59). They gave really a nice engraved medals. :yay:
Happy Thanksgiving and happy running,
Pam

Congrats, Pam!

I ran a 5K Turkey Trot in Ocala, FL today, and PRed by about a minute. I also managed to get 3rd in my age group (actually 4th but one of the overall top 3 was in my group so I bumped up). I was a little surprised that I was able to PR because I've been focusing so much on long slow distance for Goofy, so I felt pretty good.

Congratulation everyone.

Today me, 2 of my nephews (from 2 different sides of the family), and my brother inlaw participated in the Flying Feather 4 Miler in Dublin.

Nephew 1: Sophomore, Cross Country and Track team. Finished in 24:43 23rd place overall. This is his second year running after switching from soccer. His goal was between 24:00 and 25:00

Brother in Law: Did C25K last year but hasn't run since, decided to walk most of the course in 54:47.

Nephew 2. Nephew #2 is 10 years old but not an active runner. He is generally active though. He has finished a couple of 5K in the past few weeks. For some reason he decided to stick fairly close to me during the race.

Me - Been fairly active in Running/Walking for a couple of years now. Second time running this race. Last year finished in 51:30. My goal for today was 48:00-50:00

Prior to the race, I went back and forth on strategy for the race. As you may remember I completed my first 5K without walking a couple of week ago. I've gone out a couple of times for 3.5 miles but hadn't done four miles yet. Based on my experience last year, and the elevation profile, my biggest worry was going out to fast and not being able to maintain my pace throughout.

I decided to do Run 2:00/Walk 1:00 for the first 2 miles then evaluate from there how to finish. I ended up lining up between the 48:00 and 52:00 pacers (yes they had a pace team for the 4 miler) but closer to the 48:00 pacer.

Mile 1 followed my strategy fairly well. My nephew was mostly running with me. Sometimes he would run ahead during my walk break and sometimes he would go one ahead at a slow jog. I ended up finish up Mile 1 in 12:15 slightly behind my optimistic pace, but also with the worst hill behind me.

Mile 2 Continued with my run/walk strategy. My nephew missed the end of one of the walk break, and ended up getting behind me for a while. Just prior to the end of mile 2, he comes bounding up next to me again. Mostly flat with some slight rolling hills and finished mile 2 in 12:02.

Just past the mile 2 marker into mile 3 the one water stop, and my slowest walk break of the race. I also decided it would be my last walk break. That was also when my Nephew started to I think inadvertently start with the psycholocal taunting. He'd look at me and say thing like "Boy you look tired", or he'd hear my Garmin beep and say "You know it's time for us to walk again" (BTW he finished his first 5K is 32min). He actually ended up on his own continuing the run/walk we had started earlier. He'd sprint up ahead, and then slow down for me to catch up before heading off again. At the end of Mile 3 we passed the 48:00 pace leader. Through 3 miles he was keeping a very good pace. Finished Mile 3 in 11:22.

Mile 4 was mostly down hill to the finish. This was also where I decided to see what I could do. I was feeling pretty good. I completed the first half of Mile 4 in 5:30 (11:00) pace and I'm still slowly accelerating. With about .3 miles to go, my nephew takes off for the finish.Since I had pace myself so well, I was also passing large amounts of people going to towards the finish. Per my Garmin I do the second half of mile 4 in 4:56 (9:53 Pace). Also according to my garmin I did 4.03 miles. The final .03 miles was done in :11 at a 6:56 pace. Looking at the data differently, the final minute of the race I completed at a 7:47 pace.

My Final time according to the offical race results was 46:12, and my nephews was 45:58. I had an over 5 Min. PR over a year ago. Could I have finished faster, maybe (OK probably), I didn't dream I had a shot at doing it that fast. Could I have beat my nephew, Probably not (at least not without tripping him). He had 2 main goals in mind. 1) to run, mostly, with his Uncle, and 2) beat him to the finish. For the most part, he stayed back with me until the end.

Final results looked as follows.

# Time Distance Split time Split pace Elev. chg.
1 12:13 1.00 12:13 12:13 +37
2 24:15 2.00 12:02 12:03 +21
3 35:38 3.00 11:22 11:23 -28
4 46:05 4.00 10:26 10:27 -29
5 46:17 4.03 0:11 6:56 +0

As far as finishing place I finished 2302/3241. So I was out of the bottom 25% of the finishers.

Also, BTW, my average pace today was quicker than my average pace 2 weeks ago when I ran the entire 5K without walk breaks. For me, at least today, the strategic use of walk break in the early uphill section, allowed me to run faster in that section as well as be fresh enough to drop the hammer and the end.

Great job WISH Team!

johde, you have certainly put some stellar effort in your training and it sure paid off. Congratulations.

Just picked up the packet at the coolest EXPO experience ever. It was at kennedey space center and there was the atlas 5 rocket launch this morning. Now a nice relaxing normal pre race day to enjoy before I tackle my first 26.2, super excited for it and a cool theme.

I finished my first half marathon today. The first half went to plan, 1:52 time. However, due to my lack of training and forgetting my salt tablet, mile 23, my legs gave out and cramped up from lack of sodium. I pulled to the side of the road and said to myself that I needed salt and a lady on the other side at mile 17 heard me and came over and gave an extra tablet. I was very thankful and she was too cause she forgot to take hers and I reminded her. However, it was too late, I couldn't run no more than 2 blocks without cramps, so my time was greatly effected by having to walk/run, but more of a quick walk, I lost about 10 minutes at least doing this. I ran the last .2 miles and it was painful but bearable. I finished with a 4:08:48, not bad for my first and having three weeks of no training for my illness and more lucky that my age group only had 10 runners. I placed third which was exciting for my first full marathon to place, I thought for sure with the three weeks of absence, I couldn't do it, but I missed second by 52 seconds, but beat forth by 22 minutes. Overall, for my first full marathon, it was a great experience and even better learning experience. The space coast marathon was a great race, I mainly did it for the commemorating of the shuttles, the 40th anniversary of the race and the medals were above impressive, as well as the beach towel and patch. The free pizza and breakfast was awesome. The only bad part was the weather, it was forcasted at 80+ today, at least the sun stayed behind clouds till I hit mile 22, but it got hot quick. The nice misty rain for the first half was great and nice and cool. Overall, awesome race along with the rocket launch at the expo, awesome, and recommend to run it. It is a simple out and back and out and back (run up 6.5, run down 13 and back 6.5).

Great job, everybody!

My daughter and I decided last minute to do a 10k on Thanksgiving. Got there for the 9 am start and realized she didn't have her shoes. She said she was fine with watching me but I had seen the competitive spirit start in her eyes as we drove past people warming up. ;) So we made the drive home and were back in time for the 10:15 5k. Since I started with her I went out too fast (with fast being a relative term LOL) and suffered a little through the rest of the race. We both got 2nd in our age groups but I don't know my time and results still aren't up.

One week till the marathon.

Danhockey04: Congrats on your first Full! How cool to be at Kennedy Space Center! I think your finish time is very impressive, especially given your cramping towards the end. Shows your mental toughness! Great job! I'd like to run that race sometime.

Pensgirl10: Both of you placing in your age groups is excellent! Nothing beats getting medals on Thanksgiving Day! Makes the moment even better because you had to go back home to make sure your daughter could compete. Awesome!

Hey Jeremy - Did you see the "World Famous Balloon Team" at the Flying Feather? That is me and my sister - we do this for every M3S race :cool1: keeping the back of the pack safe and happy. No one ever finishes last in an M3S race cause we do!

Will we see you at the Holiday Run in Sharon Woods on the 11th? Still four miles, but you get some good hills mixed in.

Kathy

Congratulations! You beat your previous PR by over 5 minutes?! That's worth celebrating for sure! Keep it goin! :thumbsup2

Results are up and....PR!!! 24:45, my previous best in a 5k was 8:53/mile and I brought it down to 7:57. I wondered why I was so tired. :) Now I need a new goal....hmm....

Glad everyone had such happy race results. :yay: I am now looking forward to my next race, a 5K jingle bell run on Dec. 17th. Anyone else like the holiday motif race shirts? I can't wait to see the Jingle Bell shirt!

Happy Running,
Pam

2:06 Space Coast 1/2 time.

Fun race. Well organized. Was not thrilled with the really bumpy race course, but otherwise a real big 2 thumbs up!!

Kathy - I started between the 48 and 52 min. pace balloons, And I think I saw the 56 min. pace balloons. Right now, I officially have no races on the calendar. I'm currently trying to decide on a spring half marathon. I think I have it narrowed down to the Cap City half, and the Kenyon Earth Day Half. Unfortunately, I'm scheduled to work on Saturday, but no one is scheduled for the class yet.

I ran the "After Turkey Trot" last Sunday, 11/27. I don't think I've ever run a race that was more wet. It never let up during the 10K. When I was done, I put my dog in the car and went back out to finish with my sister and 2 friends who are walking/running training for the Tinkerbell.
Despite the rain, I ran a decent 53:49 (not my fastest or slowest).

I'm looking forward to doing 2 Christmas races in December and then it's the big one - the Tinkerbell 1/2 marathon at the end of January. :cool1:

Happy running everyone!
