We arrived in Myrtle Beach Friday afternoon around 3:00. Went straight to the Expo. It was nice enough - big enough to have plenty of vendors, but small enough to not be too crowded. There were two beer vendors offering unlimited cups of beer; needless to say, they were very popular! Goody bag had a tech shirt, really nice cap, and a metal water bottle. Lots of discussion about the forecast - 2-4" of snow for the night, projected to end right about race start time. Race start has already been delayed from 6:30 to 7:00 as of this time.
Check into our beachfront hotel and go grab dinner. We're back at the hotel and in bed by 9:00. At 12:30 I get a text from DD19 that says "Saw about the race. I'm sorry." I immediately text her back and ask "What did you see?" "Race is canceled as of 10:30pm." Oh. The snow is coming down so hard that it's solid white outside the window. Roll over, turn off the alarm clock, and wait for the 5:00 wakeup call so I can tell DH we're not going anywhere. Not yet, anyway.
At 7:00, there is 3 1/2" of snow on the ground. The streets are mostly clear, but there are patches of slush and ice. Ultimately, the city made the final call. We go to breakfast, and then walk to Dunkin Donuts for a latte. All morning, there are runners on the course. We went out at 12:00 and ran 5 miles down Ocean Boulevard and back. The girl I was running with decided she'd had enough at 10, so I left her and went on for a couple more miles, but turned around when I hit the end of the strand and headed back. I could have passed the hotel and gone on for an "official" 13.1, but the wind was brutal, and I decided the couple of miles that DH and I had walked after breakfast counted for something, and I stopped with 11.77.
Post-race party went on as planned at House of Blues. Band played for a couple of hours. Jambalaya, pasta salad, chocolate chip cookies, and more beer - all free. And a medal!
Even though I don't have an official time, I count this as one of the most enjoyable races I've ever run. I think they did a great job, especially under the circumstances, and I will definitely go back and run this "officially" next year. Course is FLAT. And from what I hear, fast. Since I had to stop for stoplights, cars, and people, my time was hard to judge, but I think I had a PR anyway. I'm bummed cause this was to be the race to PR the half distance this year, but other than that, there are no regrets.
