Greetings,
Long time lurker, first time poster on this part of the Disboards.
I have been running on my own for about 3 years now, and after a work project got delayed from this month to next May, decided to test myself and signed up for the R&R in SA. My first race of any kind since about 1983 and that was a 10k. I signed up and guesstimated a 1:54 time. I normally run a 7.7-7.9 mph pace, so I went conservative.
I have been mostly running in the early morning in Houston, so pretty used to warm weather and humidity. Sunday morning in SA started off foggy and in the mid-60s, and forecast to warm up quickly.
The time guess had me assigned to corral #5, out of 32. Being that close to the front had me nervous that I might have over-reached my estimate!
About 45 minutes before the start, got in line for the porta-poties, and didn't come close to using us in 35minutes, oh joy. Lady in line behind me ran the race before and said there was some out on the course.....ok, time to take my chances! Race started, and corral 5 started about 4 minutes after the start of the race and right by the first band stand before the 1st mile was complete, salvation! Lost about a minute there, but felt mucho better.
Got back on the course and started running at a decent pace, knocked the first several miles out in no time and passed many runners. Right around 5k the route runs through Alamo Square. The crowds there was amazing! High energy and my pace picked up with them, finished mile 4 with a 7:19 time, holy crap, time to slow down!!! Going on to mile 6, what is this hill thing! OUCH!!! We don't have those in my hood.
The next 8 miles I kept on a 7:35 to 7:55 pace, and kept on passing people. Fog was starting to lift and the weather got warmer and warmer. Air Force folks running the water station around mile 12 had the cleanest water stop by far. Every little break in runners, someone was running out to pick up the cups! Great job!
Finished off mile 12 and the last 1.1 miles is right around the Alamo dome. The sun finally broke out on the 3 turn from home. Before the final two turns, the crowds were getting huge, after the next to last turn, you run back down the hill, under the railroad tracks, and back up the hill to the final turn. I was waving my arms around trying to get the crowd to cheer more. The last hill sucks!!!! The 13 mile mark is at the final turn (7:27 mile), and as I start down the home straight, hear my name being announced, raise my arms and hit the finish line! Finished in 1:42:11. Holy cow, I set a PR that scares me!

Based on times that I had seen for previous half's I figured I would finish in the top 10%. Overall, I finished 617th out of over 19000, and 45th out of 863 for my age group....I was flabbergasted!
Right after the finish line, I hear my wife and kids yell for me, they made it to the finish area. We stayed outside of downtown, and we had no clue what the spectator shuttle system was going to be like. They made it in plenty of time and got some pictures of me crossing the line!
Overall a great experience for me, and I will do more half's in the future. From what I heard the experience got worse for the later runners and the marathoners. The temps got really hot for Nov and saw a lot of complaints about lack of water and food.
I would love to do a Disney race soon. Saw the Disney medals at the expo, and they look really really cool in person.
Sorry for the length of this!
Gary
