Hello WISHers...

Race report for the 31st Annual Merrill Lynch Bull Run 5K/10K. Held at Spanish River Park in Boca Raton, FL. I learned about this race from Tricia (TnTsParty). Not very many 10ks in the area so decided to do it. (what the heck?)
Race started at 7:15am and so I had to leave my house around 5:40am to drive up on I-95 and get there. I arrived around 6:30. Still prett dark outside. Found my way to the check in booth. Got my bib, chip and my t-shirt. Back to the car to finialize everything and then off to find the restroom. Of course line was long, so figured I should just get in it and wait. By the time I got out there was about 15min until the start. I headed out to the start area which was right at A1A.

They didn't really have like a flag or anything at the official "Start Line" but had a count down and off we went. Had a good amount of water stops along the way. At a certain point you had to decide which race you were to finish and go into that shoot. Once you decided you couldn't change your mind. Off to the left I went into the 10K. Got a bit quiet at that point. (not many people wanting to do the 10K today I guess) I saw Tricia as she was on her way back to finish and we cheered for each other.

It was very humid today at about 85% and temps around 78. So I was a sweaty mess at the end, but finished with a pretty good time of something around 1hr 19min. Official time is not posted yet, so I will update when I get it.

Tricia was waiting for me at the end which was great!!! I think she took a picture of me so I hope she posts it.

Here is Tricia and I before the start.

That's it for that. I don't have any races for a time as I have two charity walks to do. The March of Dimes walk (6miles) in Memory of my Coworker's babies (one made it and one passed when they were born prematurely) in Fort Lauderdale on the 25th and then the Breast Cancer Network Walk in Memory of my coworkers sister who passed away from it, in Miami on Mother's Day.

Have a great Easter weekend everyone!

...psstt... Rumor has it that both Bryan and Liz PR'd their individual Half Marathon's. I hope they post!!

Slinking away now,

Funny Frank!!! I think that should be your new name!:lmao:

Racey Tracy

Hey everyone! Happy Easter!! Here is my RR for yesterday.

The race was actually a late starting race compared to most (like I have done a lot) of the ones that I have done. It didn't start until 8:30 am. I arrived at the track at about 6:45 and started looking around for a familiar face. It didn't take long for me to find a couple of friends. (Whew) So we found out where the starting line was, which was at the beginning of the pit entrance, and then started doing some stretching to get ready. Finally, it is race time and they tell us to corral up and we are off. There are only about 450-500 runners here today so I try to make my way into the middle of the pack at the start.

I get off to a pretty good pace for me as I jog the first mile an 10 minutes. I am feeling good about that but I know how my body is as it takes me about 3-4 miles to loosen up. So here I am and my calves are starting to get that tight feeling so I decide to walk for a little. We go around turn 1 at the track and out turn 2 heading down the backstretch. (I feel like I am calling a NASCAR race.:lmao:) As we head towards turn 3, we are forced up the track to the outside where the fence is at the top. Here I stop for a moment to stretch my calves a little more. This is also a moment that I had a racewalker go past me. She looked at me and asked if I was ok and of course I was, just a little tight. No biggie and I continue on. I keep walking and jogging a bit and reach mile 4 at about 56 minutes. I am off my pace so I started jogging more. I got to mile 5 at 1:05. The next 4 miles was almost completely jogging, except as I was going uphill. That still wipes me out so I walked up the hills. We had rounded the outside area where they park the campers and came back down the entrance drive to the track and headed back into the track area. Went up the hill and ran thru the concession stand area. This was miles 7-8 and I was feeling really good. I wasn't winded, cramping or anything. We continued to run right on the outside of the track thru mile 9 and then we headed down the tunnel that takes you inside to the track and infield area. This area killed me. The tunnel was downhill and it propelled me into a flat out sprint. I went from jogging a 5-6 mph pace to sprinting about 12 mph and feeling like I was going to fall at any second. Shortly after this, I started to cramp badly. Calves, hamstrings and quads were all knotting up and I was wanting to stop. I thought I would be able to stretch it out a bit so I stopped but that really didn't help any so I kept on. I would try to jog a little here and there but I had lost my step and knew that my personal goal was slipping away. I took another Gu jel to see if that would help and tried to block it out. Started to jog a little more thru the infield area as we headed back out to the track. We made another 3/4 lap on the track and then I was able to see the finish line. Right at mile 13 was a cameraman taking pictures and I told myself that I wasn't going to walk in front of the camera or to the finish line. So I started a slight and painful jog passed him and they announced my name over the PA system. Here I am at a place that I have been to many times as a kid to watch the races and my name gets announced over the PA. That was exciting so I turned it up just a little. Finish line is here and I cross at a new PR of 2:51:17. I was a little more than 6 minutes off of my goal but I will train better and harder for my next race and I will beat it!!

But I was still able to PR and I finally broke the 3 hour mark. This race was almost 9 minutes faster than the Mercedes back in February and 16 minutes faster than Disney. I am very happy with it.

The only thing that was a little disappointing is that there wasn't a bit of bling at the end of the race so I wrote a poem.

The race is over.
The legs are shot!
For what I just did,
A hat is all I got?!

Thanks everyone! Happy Easter!

Bryan

Bryan and Tracy they are both great reports and Tracy it's always great yo see pictures. You did yourselves and the WISH team very proud!

Now go and reward yourselves with easter bunny yummyness!

Sorry I am a little late on this report - was busy cooking this morning for Easter dinner - had ham, brisket, mashed potatoes, salad, cupcakes and baked apples.

Tracy did a pretty good job with a race report. As for me my legs were really bothering me and I felt really slow in the first mile (although I made it to the first mile marker in 10:20 so that's not bad for me) I struggled along with mile 2 and started to get into it by mile 3 - (one of my marathon training coaches was at mile 3 shouting out times - 33 mins - so I was feeling good and was happy with my time) at least that was the turn around spot and I was back on my way to the finish line. It was then that I saw Tracy and cheered her on. When I got back out onto A1A it was really hot and humid. Since this was part of my marathon training route from July through November I know this stretch VERY well - at least that was comforting as I felt like I was really struggling. At any rate I knew I would get a PR since I have never done a 10k race before. I finished in 1 hour 11 minutes (not sure what the seconds were) I figured Tracy would be finishing soon so I waited for her to come around the bend. I took some pics of her and then we talked for a bit. This was the first time I got to meet Tracy in person so it was nice. We walked over to the refreshments - I got an iced vanilla latte sample from Starbucks and we talked a little bit longer and then we headed out. It was a fun race and I am sure I will do it again since its only 10 minutes from home.

Hope everyone had a Happy Easter and happy Sunday.

Inaugural Illinois Marathon & Half Marathon

Friday drive the 2.5 hrs down to Champaign in order to do packet pick up and the expo. It was extremely windy with high gusts. Just hoping it dies down for Saturday.

Everything was held on the college campus and well laid out. We quickly got our packets, goody bags and then wandered the booths. Not a bad size expo for an inaugural. After a few purchases, we headed to the gym for the pasta dinner. Plenty of food and seating plus speakers during dinner. Not bad for $10. Afterward we went back to the hotel, had a beer, laid everything out for Sat then relaxed before bed.

Race time was 8am so had breakfast in room, got our gear together and headed out. Temp was 34 with wind chill of 25. Winds had died down but a cold start anyway.

Parking and bag check was easy. Start was self seed with the pace groups working kinda like markers. At the start was one of the very few things they need to fix – the porta potties were pointed in toward the start instead of out. So while waiting in line for one last pit stop, you were also standing in the start area. Made for some confusion but there were plenty of porta potties not only here but also all along the course.

Race started on time but took 10 min for us to cross the start line. Not a biggie at all really. Course itself was great! Thru the college campus, past some beautiful buildings, into the neighborhoods surrounding the campus, thru part of town, a local park’s trail, more neighborhoods then back so you retraced part of town before heading into downtown then back onto the campus.

Volunteers were fantastic! Cheering, directing us and traffic, water stops, always with smiles. Lots of residents out cheering everyone on. Students outside the dorms. People in town near the end. There were a couple bands along the course and even AC/DC blasting out a dorm window for us. :thumbsup2

Patrick decided to walk this one with me since he has a full in two weeks so I got to set the pace. I felt really good at the start so we jogged for the first ¾ mile. Backed it down to a walk and kept moving along a decent 14:05 pace for the first 7 miles. Then it started to fall apart for me. Left hip started to hurt which unfortunately sometimes happens. This time it took the right one with it about mile 8. Then calves start to tighten as I’d changed my gait to compensate for the hip pain.

Finally came across couple of med folks and asked them for bio-freeze. Imagine my surprise when they didn’t know what it was! What?! Okay. Tried to stretch out the calves which made one of them cramp worse about a mile later. Ugh. Well far too late to give up now. However I’m used to passing people during the last 3 miles and this time I was being passed so getting mad at myself and more upset. Convinced there is no way I’m going to PR this now. Note: Please give Patrick big kudos for putting up with me during these miles instead of moving ahead. I would’ve left me.

The finish line was the 50 yard line of the football stadium. As we came back onto campus, could see the stadium and hear the announcers from inside as we got closer. Managed to distract myself watching lacrosse practice as we passed the fields and then a woman came up from behind to ask me about running Disney (had my DR shirt on).

Soon there it is….thru the tunnel and onto the right side of the field. People lining the gates cheering and the stands were even pretty full Down to the end of the field, turn left and head up the field toward the finish. Crossed the finish hand in hand, our image on the jumbo tron. Check the Garmin – 3:11:24. Somehow I managed to PR anyway. 10 min off previous half. Not what I wanted but….

Got our medals, water, stretched then headed inside to get food and gear bags. They had more water, energy drinks, bananas, apples, bagels, cookies, pasta, rolls and pizza. Plenty of food and tasty, too.

After eating we changed, then got in car to head home.
Other than a few things, this was very well run, a great course and one we will do again.

Another perspective on the Illinois Marathon

I drove down from one of the north suburbs on Friday, through periods of rain and heavy winds. Definitely not a good sign for tomorrow, I thought, as I passed a truck that had spun off the highway. I found a prime parking spot for the Expo, and headed inside to get my packet. I wandered around the expo for a while afterwards, and got some stuff signed by Bart Yasso and Dick Beardsley. Eventually, I decided to get my daily run in, and, after dropping my stuff off at the car, I did a quick run of the first (or last, depending on your perspective) couple miles of the course. Once that was taken care of, I took in the pasta dinner. While the pasta wasn't great, it wasn't bad, and the speakers were first rate. Once I was done with dinner, I headed off toward one of the superstores, to pick up a couple minor sundries, and then off to the hotel.

Saturday morning dawned clear and still. I packed everything up, relaced my shoes (no zip ties for the chip - though I found out why later), and did all the OCD stuff that runners do before a race. After deliberation, I stayed with my original race outfit - shorts, short-sleeved T-shirt, hat and gloves. I drove over to Assembly Hall (aka the UFO), and, once again, grabbed a great parking space. I sat in the minivan for a while, listening to the "Spirit of the Marathon" soundtrack, and then went in search of the "facilities".

Big props to the organizers here. Yes, there were porta-potties, but they also managed to get access to the UFO, which meant flush toilets. I killed time inside the hall, until it was shortly before the gun time. I cut things a little close in the end - I did get to the start in time, but I had to squeeze my way into the corral, and almost wound up jumping the fence. No one's fault but my own, however.

No sooner had I arrived (it seemed) than the race had begun. I was determined not to start too quickly; I would rather try to make up time in the latter miles than crash hard, especially since an injury had caused me to miss some key long runs. After a mile or so, I wound up running with another runner, and we chatted away a couple miles, being sporatically joined by other runners, though only one of them would remain with us for more than a few minutes.

Sooner than I realized, we were doubling back toward campus, and I realized that we were more than 9 miles into the race, and holding a fairly constant, but comfortable, pace. The three of us stuck together (more or less - I fell behind for a mile or so thanks to a potty break, but caught up with them before the half-marathon and marathon parted ways).

By the time we got to west Champaign, and the second relay exchange, I realized that I had a bit more gas in my tank than they did. Somewhere between miles 13 and 14, I lost my fellow runners, and I would run the rest of the race mostly on my own. I held a pretty decent pace, walking through a water station if I felt the need (which was only a couple of times), or when I was taking a Gu.

The wind was picking up when I crossed Neil and came back around to First street. (The last couple miles follow the same course as the first couple miles - which is not entirely a bad thing, I guess.) Only a brief time later (and one full stop to do a quick stretch of a seizing hamstring), I was making the last couple turns to get into the stadium. Several runners had passed me along the last long stretch, and I was determined to take those places back. I didn't get all of them, but a fellow runner and I traded places coming into the stadium, though he couldn't match my pace once I hit the astroturf.

The post-race area was kind of chaotic. I learned that we were expected to keep the chips (hence no zip-ties). The long line of people shuffling up the stairs caused me to run up the seats, rather than wait. The post-race food was some of the best I have ever had - not just bananas, apples and bagels, but pasta, pizza, rolls, cookies; great stuff for a hungry runner. Now, if they only had beer. . . .

After spending time waiting for the free massage, I headed out. I stopped to see a friend still in the Champaign area, and then drove back up to Chicago.

As far as results go - the official results have my crossing the line with a final chip time of 3:36:50, which is a PR for 10:09. My pacing was much better than previous attempts, and, while I am still a far cry from my BQ time, I feel much more confident now.
