just thought id warn all you rabbit owners to a little disease id never heard of today. (flystrike) had a fantic phone call from sister asking me to take her childrens beloved rabbit to vets. he had maggots all in stomach.

bob was happily bouncing around house and garden as he does ever day yesturday. i even stroked him myself. he is like one of the family. his hutch is opened on morning and he is put to sleep at night. if he not asleep in the sun on their patio he is in the living room watching tv.

this evening my sister noticed bob was still under the bush where he had spent most of the day and went to pick him up. he was all floppy and hardly breathing. she screamed for husband who discovered that he had theses maggots under his belly and by legs. they wrapped him in towel and we race him to vets. we was told straight away that it was flystrike. i wont go into massive detail as i will provide a link. please read this disease it can kill your childrens rabbit in 24hours.

Ewww that sounds horrible, I'm always moaning at my DD's for not keeping their rabbits runs clean I'll make them read the article.

Thanks for posting.

I have had many rabbits over the years and have fortunately never experienced this. However 2 friend's rabbits got this one survived and the other didn't.

Its also common in sheep apparently.

fly strike is truly horrible. I had over 60 rabbits as a child as we bred them, never ever had fly strike and my beloved Rosie died of old age a few months back.

some breeds are more vulnerable than others, and it is vital to clean out cage evey few days in the summer months when flys are laying. You can now buy a cover that prevents the flys from getting in.a sort of bunny fly screen!

Hope the rabbit recovers. Incidentaly, my friends rabbit has just has this and might not make it. very sad.
