I just read an article on Fox that said the people of Arizona are going to show up en masse to block these "people" from the grieving families and there are local bike groups aiding in this. The legislature is fast tracking bill to keep these "people" 300 yards away.

For the life of me, I will NEVER understand these Westboro "people". I understand free speech and all that but I don't understand what they think they are accomplishing

You know Nancy, there a very few times when I encourage people to pick up a two by four and beat the crap outta some one but I'm sorry, this group sincerely brings out the worse in me.

I had read they will counter protest peacefully but sorry, I think the residents "en masse" should forget the "peaceful haven" for about 10 minutes.

Westboro says they are picketing her funeral because her family is Catholic. And God hates Catholics.

I wish they'd drink the kool-aid already and get it over with.

i have to agree with tina-they're doing this for publicity, and if the media would STOP mentioning them at all, in any shape, form, or fashion, they'd go away. fred phelps and his family call themselves a "church" only because calling themselves a "hate group" wouldn't give them non-profit status and the word "church" makes them seem more respectable and/or credible. they're a hate group, plain and simple, and they protest because they get publicity, and they're hoping to rile someone up enough so that they'll assault them-then the westboro folks can sue. many, if not all, of them are lawyers, they're VERY well versed in our country's laws and they use them to full advantage.
the best thing to do is ignore them. however, i do agree that the family of that poor little girl deserve to mourn her in peace, and i don't blame the counter-protesters one bit. i pray the funeral will be peaceful for the family.

I know that the counter people mean well but just more people showing up gets the Witchboro people exactly what they want: more attention.

If people would ignore them, they would stop. Let the shock factor be over. When people from this group come out it is usually 2 maybe 3 people. The shocking part is seeing a 10 year old holding up a sign that says something similiar "thank god for another dead soldier."

I've been to these funerals that just turn into a circus and it does nothing one way or the other to help the family.

I totally agree with Tina. And we've had more than our share of the Westboro Baptist folks here in Iowa City over the years.

Acutally, I was waiting to hear when this would happen. Their MO is pretty clear by now - find the most heartbreaking, most tragic funerals as a backdrop for their "protests".

And true to form, they showed up, right on cue.

At least some of the members of the "church" are here in Nebraska today. Today is the funeral for the Vice Principal that was killed last Wed. during the school shooting. They also protested Sat. morning for the funeral of the boy who did the shooting (the funeral was at my church). They have been here on several occasions and people have been able to block them from harassing the families. I heard about them planning this protest, and it is just horrible! I wish legally do something about them!

I don't care if blocking them gives them attention. Those parents have the right to mourn their baby without that ugliness staring them in the face.

I agree, I don't think a child's funeral is the place to just "ignore" them. The more people that come out with angel wings will at the very least show the family just how many they have supporting them during this time

It isn't just about attention for this group. It is, however, all about the money. Every time they show up or threaten to show up in public, some misguided and like minded idiot will go to their website and make a donation. If counter protests get out of hand, or they are denied their right to protest any and every thing under the sun, the Westboro Church will sue, for money and as much of it as they can get out of any situation. And with more publicity comes more donations.

Their website address isn't westborochurch.com. It is totally inflamatory and repulsive and will appeal to the homosexual haters of the world.

I certainly hope there is karma for this group of lowlifes.

but what do you do? allow them to show up at a 9 year olds funeral and scream she deserves it? Oh &*ell no!!

I'm not sure I agree with the ignore them approach 100%. I think a lot of the worlds genocides occured because we "ignored" situations when people where screaming for help.

now that I've calmed down I do agree that assault them would play into their hands but I think we need to fully engage these wackadoodles in the courts and with laws. let's start hauling their butts into court and charging them with the court fees.

LOL have no idea. stepping on somebody's lawn illegally? heck in todays sue happy world there's gotta be some thing you can haul their carcasses in for.

Heck a guy in Philly went to one of the new casinos we have here, left his kids in the car for 4 hours and now he is trying to sue the casino saying they don't have any clocks so he could not keep track of the time he was there.

That's what they want-someone to sue them. They always win, unfortunately. What they do is vile and disgusting, but they always make sure they stay within their legal boundries, and then I am pretty sure they counter-sue, or something along those lines.
