Quiet Pool?

From the original hardcover 3 ring binder Old Key West section:
"Other Recreation: Four heated swimming pools - two large pools... plus TWO QUIET POOLS"

From the original hardcover 3 ring binder Board Walk Villa Section: Luna Park: "An enormous free-form pool area with a carnival theme... Resort also features 2 QUIET POOLS"

From the 2002 - 2003 Member Guidebook:
Page 94, Beach Club Villa Fun and Games - "Dunes Cove Pool: NEED TO GET AWAY FROM IT ALL? THIS QUIET POOL... is a perfect setting for RELAXATION, whether you want to read a novel or simply bask in the sun."

Page 102, BWV Fun and Games - "Luna Park- It's carnival time by the pool! The enormous free form pool is crowned by the famous Keister Coaster water slide... FOR A QUIETER SWIM, the resort also offers two additional pools."

Page 118, VWL Fun and Games - "Hidden Springs Pool - Get back to nature with this QUIET POOL and spa... A great place to appreciate the beauty around you."
Great information, thanks for sharing. I was surprised to read where someone said Disney didn't call them quiet pools, that didn't seem to coorespond with my recollection either. Obviously, Disney does call them quiet pools. They also describe them in a manner where you would expect less noise than the attraction pools.

Unfortunately, there are irresponsible parents who do not mind thier children's offensive and disruptive behavior. I had to deal with such parent tonight. That probably doesn't describe anyone posting on this forum, but I think we've all been witness to such poor parenting tactics if not at WDW, certainly through some other experience. The problem is larger than just the pools.

Well, if you were really mad, you could always grab the item they hit you with, politely get out of the the pool, walk over to Crescent lake (presuming this is at BWV) and toss the item in the lake and say "oops". That might help communicate the message to the father.

Maybe not.

It was me and I was simply pointing out that Disney in many instances does not call them quiet pools but in others they do.

Ummm if you are in anyway referring to me, you better go back and re read the thread!

I was Not the person to:
1.bring OKW into this thread
2.say that OKW should have life guards at their main pool
3. ask/wonder why OKW does not have life guards

If you are going to point fingers at people make sure you are pointing at the right ones. Believe it or not, I do not hate OKW. I don't think I could possibly ever bring myself to hate ANYTHING that is Disney. OKW is just very low on my totem pole of Disney resorts for many reasons. I do not feel as though it provides the same value for my pts or cash as the other DVC resorts do, but I do not hate the resort.

So sorry, I stand corrected. OKW just seems soooo much bigger because it is so spread out. All other comments remain the same.

Since most of the rest of your post was predicated on that statement, your other comments don't really work, you said:
the Disney lawyers decided that for legal issues the value resorts needed life guards at the main pools but OKW did not. I personally can see no logic, rhyme or reason in these excuses for the lack of life guards at OKW,

Since the resort is nearly three times the size of OKW, I guess there is some logic, rhyme AND reason for there to be no lifeguards.

Personally, and for the hundreth time, I don't care about the pennies the slide and lifeguard would cost, I just think the slide would detract from the atmosphere at OKW. It would be too carnival like, kind of like that hideous clown thing at BWV.

Here's a thought-
Why lifeguards?? Why not Security at each pool??
I'm kidding of course--but I honestly can't see Security responding when I call and tell them kids are tossing food in the pool and adults are zinging footballs by my head---.
Remember--absent simply awful circumstances, NO CM will ever curb the behavior of a guest that just appears to be having fun!!! As an example--the folks at the Turtle Crawl food stand often see this stuff happening themselves and do nothing. Nor the CM's who occasionally come around for towels, etc.
Just to add that this is not any sort of an "epidemic". Quite often we're able to sneak in a few hours at quiet pools w/o any problems of the sort that I've described. But about 25% of the time, folks are acting up, which is when we move on.
Honestly--there probably is no cure for this sort of problem at ANY pool w/o lifeguards. Even then it's tough. Ever watch a lifeguard tell a kid to stop running along the edge of a pool?? The parents often become quite upset--but with the Lifeguard, not their own kid!!

Do you have young children? A slide and similar pool features makes a difference for them. It doesn't have to be consistent with a carnival theme, the slide at GF isn't like that.

It is rare that Disney calls them quiet pools, that is generally a term used my guests and not Disney themselves.
Sorry, didn't mean to not reference or misreference. The above statement didn't seem accurate for the DVC areas being referenced in this thread after reading the following examples:

No big deal. It's just rare we see corrections from the poster amending the inaccuracy of these types of misstatements.

My daughter is forteen now, she was nearly three when we bought in. We go with kids of all ages all the time. The pool at OKW has always been perfect, we have never had any complaints.

The reference quoted is only one source. There are many far more knowledgeable in this area than I. About 3 years ago we had a discussion about this exact issue and Disney in general and if I recall correctly, only the DVC literature and one map could be found at the time that referenced quiet pools. DVC members have asked MS about this also (for whatever that is worth) and been told it is not intended to imply you had to be quiet, just lack of theming.

Well said.

Can you imagine if everyone took everything literally at a theme park, especially at WDW? Next time at "Whispering Canyon" I'm going to ask why the waiters are so noisey!!!!;) Space Mountain? That's not a mountain! It's made of metal. I demand a refund!!!;)

please list for me the other timeshare (in Orlando) that have lifeguards - I have been at the Marriott and Hilton - they didn't - they had people selling things - but no lifeguards -

by definition - a lifeguard must always be watching the pool and seating in a sit high enough to see the entire pool - or like at SALB - there part of the pool.

Believe me the lifeguards at SALB - will put children and adults out of that pool if they are not following the rules and the resorts will back them up.....If the parents want to complaint - then they can - but the lifeguards are paid to make sure guest follow the rules.

Sorry you are wrong........ both of those quotes are from the same thread.
As I said, sorry for the incorrect post regarding the size of the value resorts vs OKW but other than that I do not see any rhyme or reason for any of the other excuses. "The guests at the value resorts do not supervise the children well enough so therefore they need life guards" Come on that is ridiculous. BS rationalization if I have ever heard it. This statement is also very prejudiced and assuming regarding guests at the value resorts.
I do not believe for a minute that you do not care about the extra cost because every time any addition to OKW dues come up you are always one of the people that is totally against any increase.
It must be a major blow to you though knowing that the value resorts are 3 times the size of OKW!!!! Knowing how hung up you are on "size"! LOL!!!

Okay the map says that there is suppossed to be a quiet pool at BW which I have been to before but for some reason last week there were many PARENTS who forgot that it is in fact an quite pool!

There are two so-called 'quiet' pools at the Boardwalk, one on the Villas side, one on the Inn side. The one on the Villas side can be noisy, especially so as it is adjacent to Community Hall.

The one on the Inn side is allmost always quiet with just a few people reading books by the poolside. My wife & I usually cross over the lobby and use that pool. We often have it to ourselves.

Ha ha, I see what you mean. The Haunted mansion would really be haunted, huh? And no smoking? Line forms here? Must be 54 inches tall to ride this ride? Entrance? Restrooms? Women? Men? Handicap accessible? No swimming? Authorized personel only?

Can you imagine if everyone took everything literally

Please note the word "everything". Obviously this would take into account "everything". Not "some things", but "everything". Some things need to be taken literally, "Everything" can not be.

No Smoking-literal
No swimming-literal
Mens Room-literal
Whispering Canyon-Not literal
Quiet Pool-Not literal

I still agree with Dean. Quiet does not refer to no one making a sound.

So who decides on whether there is a literal interpretation or not? I say Disney does and they quite obviously don't believe that the "quiet" in "Quiet Pool" means silence.

that's why they put the Community hall beside the "quiet pool":bitelip:

Quiet pool means silence? Of course not but when Disney describes in thier literature cited above that:

"two large pools... plus TWO QUIET POOLS"

"An enormous free-form pool area with a carnival theme... Resort also features 2 QUIET POOLS"

"Dunes Cove Pool: NEED TO GET AWAY FROM IT ALL? THIS QUIET POOL... is a perfect setting for RELAXATION, whether you want to read a novel or simply bask in the sun."

FOR A QUIETER SWIM, the resort also offers two additional pools."

Get back to nature with this QUIET POOL and spa... A great place to appreciate the beauty around you."

it is reasonble to expect not to get smacked in the head with a thrown object by screaming unsupervised kids, or that even though it might be more convenient for parents to take over the smaller quiet pool with bunches of kids making great deals of noise, that maybe the "it's all about me" parents might be semi considerate of those around them and more appropriately utilize the pool that is obviously intended for more roudy behavior.

In my opinion, when Disney who chooses words with great care, labels a pool a quiet pool, they are not intending it to be as loud as a themed attraction pool. Whispering children who swim only underwater or silence? of course not, but quieter than the themed pool as the descriptions state.

Some of the "worst" behavior I've seen at WDW has been at "quiet" pools. With no lifeguards, it means virtually anything goes..throwing French Fries and other assorted food in the water,
running, jumping and diving (often right in front of the sign which says not to do that), throwing softballs, baseballs and even footballs from one end of the pool to the other, etc etc etc.
Oft times we've seen several families literally take over one of these pools, acting like they were simply out in their own backyard pool and behaving like absolute jack-asses!!!

I'm constantly amazed by the "it's all about me", take advantage of the system to the greatest degree possible, regardless of how it might inconvenience or harm others, bend, circumvent and break any rules with misdirected interpretations of Disney to support thier own desires (presented as factual authoritive statements, but not really based on knowledgable Disney resources or references), "Theme" that seems to come through in several threads. What Uncleromulus describes doesn't seem reasonable for any pool, let alone a quiet pool.

I always thought "quiet pool" meant you were supposed to be quiet. I do go there with my kids, 8 and 6, but we go there to swim, and visit Community Hall. I realize people are there to read and sunbathe in relative peace and quiet, so I do shush my kids if they get too loud.

Thank you, we do the same and try to be considerate of others. While we may go for late night swims at DVC resorts, we also try to keep noise to a minimum, our voices low, and we still have a wonderful time.

p.s. Richyams, it's nice that your 14 year old daughter and your family have enjoyed the OKW pool over the years. I'm sure you'll have many more.
