First timer - is it quicker to walk through the park to get to Fantasyland first thing in the morning or take the train?

I would walk, but I also wouldn't go to Fantasyland first. Of course that's just me; it all depends on what you want to get out of your day. If you're a first-time and want the coolest experience I would walk thru main street, thru the castle, and on to fantasyland.

Walking is way faster than the train, even if a train were in the station ready to leave.

Being a veteran of the old dumbo or die days, it is absolutely walking going right through the castle. If you are pushing a stoller, go to the left when you approach the castle.

As a rule of thumb 90% of the time the train will not get you anywhere faster than walking. Unless you have a lot of children or strollers, or if you have group members that like to stop and touch everything at every store or ask for snacks when you walk past every cart. In that case the train would at least allow you to avoid those distractions. Otherwise walking will most likely always be your faster options. Luckily, Disney uses a "spoke" system where there are many paths that will cut directly across the park so even if you need to cut straight across it will be easy for you. I will however recommend taking the train at least once because it is nice to just be able to look at everything and slow down the pace a little ! That would be my advice.

Geez, c'mon...clicking your ruby slippers together is clearly the quickest. Not as nice a view as a parachute ride, tho.

much faster to walk. Up until recently we would do an EMH at MK just to do fantasy land first thing. As someone said, there are lots of paths and short cuts. There will be CMs everywhere when the park opens. Ask one of them the quickest way to get to ride X. They will often point out a better way to get somewhere. I would know before you enter the park, which ride you plan to go to first and let your kids know that too. Plan around your FP and know which rides are going to be very long lined later and plan these first. It's fine to give the kids a say, but they may choose to ride the merry-go round ten times while the other lines grow longer and longer. We always let DS choose the first ride but we know what that ride is before we get there and go with a plan from there.
