for those of you using a fairfax card, we used ours as a guarantee on room at ssr...
we now have no money:rolleyes1, well $4 lol, they hold 1500 and i have been told:hug: it will take 10 days for the money to re appear on the card:scared1:
had to recharge the card last night as spending the kids spending money:rotfl2:
thought this might help someone incase they get done like me:confused:

That's really annoying. I have used my debit card in the same way before but the hotel has never actually taken/'held' any money.

This is quite common with prepaid cards and they recommend that you don't use it to guarantee rooms for this reason. Although I don't think any of them state that officially on their websites which is annoying :( I found out about this through MSE I'm sure.

Hi,
Maybe a small ray of hope, but last year I bought something for DD's using my Fairfx card, and then they found something else, so I had to return it.
The credit showed on my card the next day, so do check, the refund may be made quicker than 10 days. Hope so. :goodvibes

EDIT: Never mind - found my answer. I didn't see the link posted to the other thread.

We gave a normal debit/credit card at check in, but then we went to pay off our bills as we went along with our fairfx card. Then they have both cards on file, without anything being held on hold on the fairfx card.

Sorry you got caught out - sounds like a real hassle.

I can't remember giving one at all star movies - we must have used our visa debit. I know we declined adding charging priviledges to our kttwc.

Do you have to leave a card imprint? Just wondered as I am taking only my debit card. There will be some money in my account at home but not much. Also does anyone know whenstaying at a hotel when you have paid one nights deposit do they accept cash /TC to pay the rest of the Room cahrge or will it have to be card? Just need to know so I can leave enough in my account at home.

thanks:hug:

you only leave a card imprint if you want to charge things to your room key. I opt out of this. They ask you at check in and some find it a lot easier, whereas i prefer to pay as i go. There is no obligation to do so though.

this may vary from one hotel to the next and i would recommend contacting the specific hotel to ask about their policy. It may also not be a bad idea if you are worried to contact your bank's customer services line and check where you stand with them.

thanks:hug:

hth :)

So sorry this happened to you. I didnt even think about having to take a card to do this.

Even though I am not using my debit card, would it be okay just giving them that?! They wont actually take anything off it will they?

Debit and credit cards work differently to prepaid cards so from what I understand, there is no need to 'insure' sufficient funds for payment. A debit card will allow the transaction to go through even without sufficient funds, although the latter situation would place in in overdraft whether authorised or not. As others have said, you don't need to settle your bill with the same card that you used to secure room charging so if you wanted to settle using a different card, cash or even travellers cheques you would have not problem doing so. The hotels are simply ensuring that they have some kind of fallback to cover charged costs if you failed to settle on departure. I would be wary with any kind of cash card or even Electron cards though. These operate more similarly to a prepaid card, although they are issued by major banks.

Its top do with the difference between a debit card and a credit card.
When you guarantee something like a hotel room they get an authorisation from a credit card, but don't actually charge it, but there's no way of doing that on a debit card except by actually taking the money. Quite often at hotel check-in desks you see a notice explaining that it's better to use a credit card for that reason.
Sorry I don't think I explained it very well but if you're going to use one card to guarantee the room then another one to pay for it later, then use a credit card for the guarantee - it won't matter if it's a UK card or whatever as it won't actually be charged (but it will if it's a debit card), unless you have to pay a deposit or something.

think it makes sense to hold the money,

1 leave an imprint of the fairfax card for your bill,
2 empty the card on souvenirs / food etc
3 skip on checking out without settling the bill
hotel have nothing to charge.

Hope you manage to get it sorted out asap tracy:confused3

Hope your having a great time other than that:banana:

Tracy, if you settle your bill with the front desk, will it not release the hold on the card if you put a credit card down as a guarantee?

we did not use out natwest card, as when we did olci natwest blocked the card thinking it was fraud, so used the fairfax to hold and paid with natwest card.

So glad you got your money sorted. What a nightmare!

It sounds like you are having a good time. Are you going to the next DIS meet as well?
