Some people on the “here now” thread on the Disney board asked for info on how the universal portion of the trip so I’m posting that info here. For some background, it’s just me and my husband on the trip. The last time we were at universal was before the Kong ride went up. We’re Harry Potter fans but not huge thrill ride people. I also get motion sickness from 3D screen rides sometimes. We love Disney but like Universal too :)

We knew we wanted to stay at an on-site hotel that included express pass. So I bought an annual pass for myself and used it to get a hotel discount at Royal Pacific. The pass paid for itself with the hotel discount. More to come later!

Just a heads up for anyone heading to the airport soon. The southwest area at MCO is crazy tonight. We had to wait 35 minutes at the outside sky cap to check our luggage. The line inside to use the self serve kiosks to check bags was even longer. We have pre check so didn’t have to wait for security but the regular line was posted at 30 minutes. Give yourself plenty of time!

Back at home! Our flight ended up delayed by about 90 minutes and it was past 1 am by the time we got home. I’m thankful we have an extra day to rest before going back to work tomorrow.

Back to Universal…Thursday was a transition day for us. We had spent the morning packing up and then shopping and lunch at Disney Springs. We took a Lyft to our Universal hotel and got to Royal Pacific around 2pm. There was no line to check in and our room was ready.

We really liked Royal Pacific. The theming was fun and the hotel was beautiful. The service was great. They texted us shortly after we checked in and said we could text if we needed that. I did that a couple times and it worked really well. The only downside was that thethe loud music. We hung out by pool for a couple hours after checking in and thankfully the weather cooperated. We hadn’t had an pool time at Disney since it always rained when we were thinking about pool time. The pool at Royal pacific was fun but pretty crowded.

After pool time, we got cleaned up and headed over to City Walk. We had an 8pm reservation at toothsome but went over a little early to check things out. Though it ended up there didn’t really seem to be as much to do at City Walk as at Disney Springs. It was mostly bars and restaurants. But we did put in a mobile order for some donuts at Voodoo donuts. There was a long line to get in but with the mobile order, I was able to skip the line entirely and go straight to the counter. If you want those donuts, definitely do mobile order! We had them for breakfast the next couple days and they were delicious :) And there was a good selection of vegan donuts too.

Yum, donuts!

We went over to toothsome at 7:50. Checking in here was a mad house. There was one long line for people just trying to get milkshakes to go. And then there was a separate shorter line for people with reservations. But no signs so you didn’t really know where to go. When we figured it out and got to the desk, we were told to wait and we would get a text when the table was ready and to come back to the desk. We got the text literally a couple seconds later. So we went back to the desk but then had to wait like another 15 minutes. There were a lot of people in very close proximity in that area. And maybe only half the people wearing masks. But the good news is that once we got seated, the tables were pretty well spaced and not right on top of each other.

I got the Brussels sprouts and the veggie pasta. The pasta was surprisingly delicious. I wanted something kind of light, which is why I ordered that. The pasta was actually spiraling veggies so it was light but the sauce was delicious. The Brussels sprouts were good but a bit too much cheese for what I was feeling that evening. My husband got the chicken BLT and he said it was really good. He then got the vanilla milkshake which I shared a bit of. I was ribbing him for it being a boring choice but it actually tasted amazing. And the server confirmed that the milkshake was in a souvenir glass and we could feel free to leave with it. We got out of there after 9:30 so it did take a while but overall, the service was good. There were still lines as we left!

After that, we took the boat from city walk back to our hotel to get ready for a full day the next day.

Did you notice if the staffing was appropriate?
we were there in June and it felt like 100% capacity and 30% staffed.

For both Disney and Universal we saw tons of people in training. They’re all clearly staffing up very quickly. Both parks seemed clean, I didn’t see the trash issues that people mentioned from earlier in the Summer. The lines and waits for food, especially quick service were a bit on the long side. So I’d say maybe they’re back to 80-90% of where they need to be.

Thank you for the update, we will be at UO and WDW the last 10 days of August and will let you know if there is any progress.

Not flying SW, but I think you have just helped me solidify not checking bags. I usually don’t, but I could for free…but if it’s time consuming then I won’t.

Thank you for sharing. I do love Voodoo donuts. Did you have a favorite?
The vegan version of the one that’s shaped like a voodoo doll was my favorite :). I liked the maple one too. The peanut butter and jelly one was too peanut butter-y for me but that’s a personal taste issue.

We just flew back tonight (I'll write something up tomorrow). I can confirm that MCO was a madhouse this afternoon also. We didn't check bags going to Orlando but had accumulated so much stuff that we had to check returning. Also Southwest. The line was insanely long. And then the security line was long. And food lines. Basically however much time you think you need for MCO, add more time!

Sorry you had to deal with that too! It sounds like the same experience we had, long lines everywhere. I guess maybe they’re not back up to full staffing yet.

Friday was our first park day at Universal. Our priority was Hagrids since it wasn't open the last time we were there. We had early entry due to staying at Royal Pacific. The park opened at 9 with early entry at 8am. We got there at 7:30 (we walked from the hotel) and we were pretty close to the turn stiles. Walking was easy and hardly any line at security at that point.

Once we were let in, we went straight to Hagrid's. We loved it! I'm not a huge roller coaster fan but this was such a well themed ride. I highly recommend this one. After we got off Hagrids (it was pretty much a walk on for us) we went to the castle and did the forbidden journey ride. I love this one too, but the screens can make me a little motion sick. I had to close my eyes during the quidditich scene.

Once we were done with that, we went over to the Marvel area to do the Spider Man ride. This is another one that we had done before but really loved. It's a good use of screens and practical effects together. Next we went to the Kong ride since that one was new to us too. I thought it was fun. Not a top tier ride, but still really enjoyable. Again, a good mix of screens and practical effects.

Stopped for a Jurassic Park photo on the way :)

Then we walked back to the Harry Potter area and took the train to the other park. I love the way they did the train! Everything up until now had pretty much been a walk on so this is the first line we used the Express Pass on. With the Express Pass, we never waited more than 5 minutes at the most. Once we got to Diagon Alley, we just wandered around and took in the atmosphere, checked out the shops, watched all the kids doing their magic spells with their wands :) We decided to save the rides on this side for later. We also caught one of the street performances.

Then we took the train back to Islands because we had a lunch reservation at Confisco's. It was a nice break indoors in the air condition. The food was pretty good too. They have a pork banh mi on the menu but I asked if they could make it with tofu instead. And they could! It was delicious. It wasn't too crowded in their either at that time of day so that felt good. After that, it was time for a break so we took the boat back to our hotel for a rest. I really liked that the hotel was close enough to walk but also had an option to take the boat when our feet were tired.

After a nap at the hotel we were refreshed and came back in the evening. We got a lot done on the Universal Studios side at this point. We just decided to go counter clockwise and just try all the rides we were interested in. We also did some window shopping on the way. I think the first ride we did was the Simpsons ride, which was fun. This is a really well themed area but it seemed like there was no shade at all. But we did have to stop and take a break for some Duff Beer :)

After that we got in Men In Black, the Mummy, Fast and Furious and Race through New York. Again, with the Express Pass, there were no lines. But once we got out of that last ride, it was pouring. So we ran over to the Monster Cafe to see if we could get food there but it was closed. So then we ran over to Mel's since it wasn't too far. We were able to get a table there to eat dinner. We hoped that the rain would stop by then but it didn't. So we just got our umbrellas out and ran over to Gringott's to get that ride in. I love this one! It did end up being around a 15 minute wait since the express line merged with the regular line before the pre-show. It was still raining so we decided not to wait for the night time shows and head out after this. Unfortunately, the boats weren't running because of the lightning so we walked back to the hotel. All in all, a good day in spite of the rain.
