The good news - out of nowhere I find out next week I am going to Orlando for business. It looks like the hotel I will be at is about 2 miles from Epcot.

The bad news - I will only be there for about 40 hours.

Looking over my schedule I am only free from about 6pm-10pm on Wednesday night. Anyone got any suggestions? I don't have an AP and don't really want to pay to get into a park. Thinking of dinner options around the World or possibly other sights/experiences that you have found you don't make time for during regular full family visits. Anything outside the theme parks going on next week that you'd suggest checking out?

Right now I'm leaning toward either dinner at Animal Kingdom and check out the general area because I've never stayed there and we will be there a year from now with extended family under our DVC points or dinner at Poly or GF and watch Wishes across the lagoon.

You could also have dinner in one of the Epcot resorts (Captain's Grille, maybe) and and take a short after dinner stroll to see some of Illuminations. DTD is also fun.

I hope you have a nice time.

:)

I think scouting out AKL is a nice idea. Treat yourself to dinner at Jiko, watch out over the savannahs (with or without night vision goggles), have a drink at Victoria Falls, walk around a bit. You can really spend a few hours there without noticing. I would also consider heading over to the Boardwalk and having dinner at Flying Fish and walking around that area as well. When we went down to Orlando for a convention at the Gaylord Palms, getting close to and seeing MK without any plan or time to go in was tough, much tougher than we expected (we decided to take a taxi to MK and then take a bout to Ft.W for HDDR one night). So while watching Wishes from Poly or GF is nice, we personally don't understand how people could get that close with no intentions of going in at all on a trip.

...I've had the luck (pleasure) of doing 2 business trips in the last couple of years when I had AP's and at least 1 or 2 nights to do dinner. Yep - did Epcot every free night.

I think the idea of the boardwalk is a good one.

Tough dilemma! I did the Poly dinner and Wishes on the beach earlier this month and it was a great time. However for that you have to make sure Wishes is being done, due to the parties at MK.

From looking at the calendar for next wednesday and all the wednesdays in October you would be fine because Wishes is showing at 9pm.

I must suggest Kona Cafe for dinner, if you don't have an ADR yet. I loved the food and the atmosphere.

Also I have heard great things about BOMA at AKL but I have never eaten there myself.

Another option might be either going to the Boardwalk or YC/BC and having dinner at one of the restaurants and then try to watch Illuminations?

I hope you have a great time!!

Depending on what I'm in the mood for and what is going on the particular day I was there, I would either:

Eat at and watch Wishes from the Poly

Hop around the monorail resorts to shop and eat and finish up watching Wishes

Eat at an Epcot resort and take in the Boardwalk and area shops and Illuminations

Shop and eat at DTD. Maybe do a balloon ride (not sure how late they run) and see if any live entertainment that night

AKL dinner and checking out the savannas and resort itself is fun, but I think it would take up less time than other options. Boma for dinner is great!
