We had a fabulous time.

Highlights:

1. Westin Horton Plaza. Wonderful hotel for a couple. We were a bit cozy with three of us (17 year old daughter) in standard room, but since we stayed for free with Starwood Points, no problem. We practically had the pool to ourselves Mon-Thurs, though on Friday night a bunch of jerks were polluting the pool air with tobacco fumes.

2. San Diego Zoo. What a trip. Hint: see the pandas first thing.

3. Midway museum. A must see.

4. Sammie's Woodfire Pizza in Gaslamp. We ended up eating dinner there three nights. On Friday night, we had a sidewalk table and people watched for two hours (I hadn't seen Hare Krishna's for 35 years!)

5. The airport. Close, quick and convenient.

6. Cab drivers.

7. Coronado beach.

Low lights:

1. Old Town. Touristy rip off.

2. Seaport Village. See above.

Thanks Dobie - I will have to remember Sammie's Woodfire Pizza when I am there next week. I think my kids will really like that.

Thanks for the trip report, Dobie. Can you tell me more about Coronado? Is there a pretty beach area that you enjoyed the most, etc. (I'm trying to do my homework for my upcoming trip with DH in October. :) )

Coronado is an excellent place to walk the beach. If you do so, go EARLY (7 am) the shore will be littered with sand dollars. We like to collect them and bleach them out to put in vases with sand and other shells for display.

We didn't have a car, so we wandered down to the ferry terminal on the waterfront. The ferry goes to Coronado on the hour and returns on the half hour. We walked the two blocks to the Coronado bus shuttle (free with a San Diego Metro pass) which is timed to coincide with the ferry and goes back and forth between the terminal and the Del Hotel Coronado every hour. The bus took 10 minutes, at most, and dropped us in front of the hotel. We walked through the public areas of the hotel to the beach. We used the hotel lobby bathrooms.

On the way back, we grabbed a cab in front of the hotel--fare was 7 bucks to the ferry terminal--because we were ready to leave and didn't want to wait for the bus. It got us to the ferry just before we left.

Take food and drinks--everything at the Del is unbelieveably expensive. However, anyone can use the beach and it is beautiful.
