Me and DH are considering purchasing a DVC in the next couple of years. I was thinking about doing it next year because we want to go to California and also Disneyland at the end of the year. He wants to wait a little longer. He has a theory that since the timeshare has an end date for everyone for example some are 2047, 2057, etc. depending which resort you buy with that the cost to buy must go down since every year you are getting less years with it and less points and vacations and such. I was wondering if that is the case and if anyone can explain. thanks

they will go down eventually...presumably...but there's no telling when the 2042 resort prices will really hit the wall...

many of the 2042 resorts (EXCEPT BCV) have gotten cheaper if you buy a resale contract. but buying a 2042 resort direct is currently only a smidge cheaper than buying BLT.

the cost to buy a given resort directly also tends to go up in time. BLT may cost $112 at the moment but in a year or two could easily be $120-125 per pt. depending on the economy there may be incentives that keep the actual net cost relatively constant but IMO, i would not recommend waiting if you intend to buy directly.

resales OTOH may continue to get cheaper as the economy struggles...as more resales hit the market, DVC will have to lower ROFR or get rid of it for certain resorts, which would mean that cheaper resales would be available to the end buyer.

it's complicated but here's a list of historical original pricing for the resorts for reference.

notice how you could have bought SSR a few years ago for $80-85...now if you buy direct, it will cost you more, despite getting fewer years. but if you buy resale, the price is still comparable. OTOH, had you bought OKW in the early 90s for $50-55, you could still sell at a profit, even with nearly 20 fewer years on the contract. (DVC is selling OKW with a 15-year extension for about twice what they charged in the early 90s.)
