I'm looking at booking flights on Orbitz, but I've read on their page that they don't take money for luggage, and you need to do that through the flight carrier.

Does this mean you need to do it at the airport? Would you get charged extra to call the carrier and book it, as apposed to just booking the whole flight through the carrier?

It just seems odd to me

I've not booked through orbitz but all the US airlines that charge for luggage usually do so when you check your bags after they've weighed them. Once you have your booking number you should be able to bring up the reservation on the airline's site and if they offer pre-payment you could maybe do it through there? Or maybe even at online check in time? I wouldn't be concerned though, it seems pretty standard to me. You're TA would probably say the same if you were booking through them.

When we did US domestic flights a couple of years ago, we weren't able to buy our luggage until check in anyway.

You should definitely be able to buy the fares, then log onto the airline booking and make any additional purchases that you need to :thumbsup2

As others have said, this is not an Orbitz issue, it's a airline thing.

I tried ringing AA last year to pre-pay my luggage and they said I have to wait until I get to the airport. It was a wasted toll call. This year I am booked on a one way domestic flight with Delta and there was no where during the booking process to prepay luggage. I'm also flying Jet Blue and while my first bag is included, I need to wait until I get to the airport to pay for the second one.

Basically, I think they like you to pay at the airport in case they can sting you for other fees such as over-weight or over-size.

It's actually an Australian domestic flight that I was looking at booking through them. I should have been clearer, sorry.

I wanted to book a Virgin Saver fare, which includes luggage, but through Orbitz it doesn't look to give me the option... :confused3

That I can't really help with, I've never bothered to use Orbitz for Australian bookings.

Are you getting a great deal with them?

It was maybe a couple of dollars cheaper then booking direct, but it was hard to tell without luggage added on. I figured I'd book through them to get the rewards. :confused3
