Quick observations from a East Coast / WDW vet

Thanks! I guess we will be taking the "5". We get into LAX on a Thursday at 12.30 pm and we will be driving to San Diego. We are staying in Coronado. On Sunday we are going to the San Diego Zoo and then heading to DL in the late afternoon.

You'll take the 405 which merges into the 5 just south of Irvine ;)

Ahhh, I have always noticed east coasters' bias towards the east in every way including Disney. When I read about the anti-DLR bias I always get the feeling it comes from people who have never actually been to DLR - just repeating "what they have heard" in an endless came of "telephone".

<snip>

SoCal is at its peak beauty right now likely because of all the storms this winter. It has been a long time since I have seen it so green as I did this weekend. Be advised OP if you go back SoCal tends to look more hazy, dull brown in other times of the year.

As a native WDW'er, I kinda still think DLand is a 1/2 day park. Yesterday was the first time I've actually spent a good chunk of time there (8-5), and did BOTH parks, and felt like we hit most of the good rides without missing anything major. :confused3

You're dead on about the springtime in SoCal being lovely... wildflowers everywhere, it's my favorite hiking season!

When I had to drive "the 5" down to San Diego it was the crazy motorcycles driving in between the cars at high speeds that made me look like this:scared1:

Everyone seems to drive fast but the weaving motorcycles made me fear I was going to kill someone by accident. I didn't change lanes for fear of one of them zooming up!

Glad you had a great trip, well except for the earthquake. But hey, now you can say you've experienced one!

We were in San Diego the same day of the earthquake, after spending 3 days at DLR. Where were you? We were leaving Seaport Village so we were in the car, waiting for the green light infront of a hotel, I believe it was the Embassy, I can't recall very well, but we were still close to the Seaport Village. Then we went to the Maritime Museum and felt the next one.

We were at our hotel and (fortunately) outside at the pool at the time. Rest of the family was swimming, I was lounging. I really think I would have completely freaked out if I was inside...especially if I was in a high rise hotel.

Can you tell us a little more about your trip? How long did you go? Where did you stay in San Diego and at DL? How long did you spend in the parks and how long in San Diego? What were the highlights of the San Diego area? We are also planning a trip to So. Cal in July and we are trying to figure out what we should do. THinking 4 nights at DLR and 5 at Hotel Del Coronado or Torrey Pines? I would love to hear about your favorites spots.

We started out in DLR, then went to San Diego, but unfortunately had to drive back to LAX to fly home, which is how we ended up on the 405 right around lunch time. The traffic was moving really fast on the 5 also, but to me the 405 just felt more dangerous and people were FLYING past me....in my Hyundai rental which shook if we went above 70.

We arrived on a Monday early afternoon and spent most of Monday - Thursday in the parks. Quick 1/2 day up to Hollywood, some time at the pool, but mostly in the parks. Because of the time difference, we were up really early most mornings and there for rope drop...but the bad part about that was that we were pooped before 8:00. We managed to get to the Electircal Parade at DCA (fabulous) 1 time, and saw the DLR fireworks 1 time. Unfortunately the fireworks were on our last night, and I was disappointed that we weren't going to be able to see them again. (A little perspective - when in WDW, we are at Wishes/Fantasmic/Illuminations etc. probably 6 out of the 7 nights we spend there).

I had originally planned to do San Diego first, then finish up in DLR, but decided to reverse it because I really wanted to be in the parks Mon-Fri rather than the weekend. It was a good call, because Friday (Good Friday) we went to DLR in the morning to do a few final rides and it was much more crowded than earlier in the week. Crowds were very manageable though, (using fastpass) and we did everything that we wanted to do.

Stayed at HoJo which was good...a little noisy since the 5 freeway is in their backyard, but it was clean, close, and staff was nice. And we were tired at the end of the day, so the noise really didn't keep us up. Plus they had a Keurig coffee maker and "to go" cups n the room. :thumbsup2

We ate a lot of our meals offsite - stopping at Mimi's, McDonalds or IHop for breakfast on the way to the parks, lunch at a Counter Service place, then hit Downtown Disney or Garden Walk for dinner on our way out. Goofy's kitchen was a big disappointment - both food and service - so much so that we canceled our breakfast reservations for Mickey's breakfast at PCH and opted to spend that time in the parks instead.

It's funny that you mentioned Hotel Del Coronado...we actually stayed in Coronado instead of downtown San Diego! It was beautiful..really nice downtown area with lots of shops and restaurants, and the Del is absolutely stunning. If for some reason you can't stay there, the Glorietta Bay Resort is right across the street from the Del, so the beach is still nice and close - perfect for July.

We were in Coronado Friday - Tuesday, and used points to stay at the Marriott on the bay side of the island. It was really nice - pretty grounds, nice pool area, restaurant was good, and you could walk over to the "ferry landing" which had a few restaurants and shops. You would have to drive over to the ocean beach side though, which was a non-issue for us in March with the cooler weather, but I could see it being crowded and difficult to park in July. Definitely better off at the Del or Glorietta if you will be spending a lot of time on the beach.

We skipped San Diego Zoo and opted for the Wild Animal Park instead and loved it. It was about a 45 minute ride from Coronado. We really just didn't have the time or energy to do both while we were there. We also did the Hornblower Brunch cruise which I highly recommend. It was a nice ride around the bay, food was good, unlimited champagne - what's note to love?? Hint if you go - board as early as you can! The buffet is already open, so you can eat while everyone else is boarding, then head upstairs and relax while everyone else is eating.

Overall, like I said, it is a beautiful place, we had a fabulous trip, and I can't wait to return. Not sure when - we may have to squeeze in a WDW trip first. The funny thing is that we went when schools were closed here for spring break, and the airfare was SUBSTANTIALLY cheaper non-stop, round trip NY to LAX than it would have been to get to Florida...like 1/2 the price. So I'm thinking that SoCal may become our new school break destination. :thumbsup2

Mom2aRredhead - THank you so much for all the information. I am so excited now. I thinking we are booking the hotel del coronado tonight so I think we will go with that (although I will check out the other one you mentioned just in case).

What is the Hornblower cruise and how do we book it and how early for a July trip? Is it kid friendly? The champagne sounds right up my alley. Also, was the beach totally packed?

[*]They really do put avocado on (almost) everything in CA :lmao:

That made me laugh so hard!!! Many years ago, I went to NYC for the first time ever. My friend's boyfriend took us to Stage Door Deli (the original). And being a true california gal, I asked to add avocado to my sandwich..:lmao: You would have thought I had asked for roadkill!!! The waitress looked at me and said, "Honey, you must be from California! There is no way that I am letting you put that green stuff on one of our sandwiches!!!!!" I can still see her standing there with her hands on her hips!

Happy to hear you had a fabulous trip!! :goodvibes Our 1st trip to DL and San Diego is this July. We are staying in Coronado at Glorietta Bay. I looked at the Hotel Del but it is pricey and they charge a resort fee and a parking fee! Glorietta Bay looks really nice, we get a continental breakfast and we got a great rate!! Any tips on Coronado-- great restaurants? That is interesting about the flights being cheaper to LAX than Orlando over spring break. I will have to check them from Philly next year.

Congrats on finding Disneyland. I concur that Remember Dreams Come True is the best fireworks show at any Disney Park. Did you get to see the Aladdin show at DCA?

California is amazing. When you come back you need to visit Monterey, San Fran, and most of all YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK!!! YNP is the most beautiful place I've ever been to.

Disneyland is better overall to WDW in my opinion. It is smaller (which is better) and the rides and attractions are just better for the most part. I am really hooked right now on California. We did stay at the Hotel Del Coronado two years ago and loved every minute of it. The location can't be beat.

Hoping to return to DL and San Diego in 2011.

LOL - The beach was almost empty, because it was only in the mid-high 60's and really windy right along the water when we were there. I don't think you can beat the location of the Del, and if you can swing it, go for it! We walked around the "public" areas there, and it really is beautiful. Glorietta is literally steps away across the street, so check that one too...may be a bit more affordable option for a similar location. A lot of the hotels charge for parking, so add that in. Fortunately at the Marriott, we didn't have a problem parking right on the street (saving $22.00 per night!) but it was not "peak" season.

Here is a link to the Hornblower cruise info...

A really nice way to spend the afternoon...and its walking distance to the Seaport Village and Midway so lots to do. Definitely drive there instead of the ferry though since parking is FREE on Sundays. And yes - kid-friendly... complete with flutes full of sparkling cider.

Other dining - hmmmm. We really weren't there very long. We ate at the Beach Diner (twice actually - yummy!), The Irish Pub whose name escapes me now, the restaurant in the Marriott, the Pizza place at the Ferry Landing, one of the restaurants overlooking the bay @ Seaport Village, the brunch cruise, and had lunch at the Wild Animal Park. The pizza place actually had printed on their menu that they make their dough with "authentic water shipped in from New York", which, being from New York City of course made me laugh...and no, it didn't make it "authentic NY Pizza", but it was not a bad attempt.

Someone asked about the Aladdin show...it was great. The Genie absolutely stole the show and was hysterical. Definitely make time to go and see it. We were seated up in the balcony and really enjoyed it, but sitting lower would have been a little better. Although...I don't want to give anything away, but being up in the balcony was really good for a few parts of the show too!

:rotfl2: That's hilarious!

I have not been everywhere but I have been to a lot of places across five continents...and Yosemite is the most beautiful place I have seen on this planet. See the valley but also the high country! KCMike and I agree on this one! ::yes::

Thank you for that short summary!!! :)

Is the 405 the freeway between LA and San Diego?

I love Wishes, so now after reading your observations I am really hoping there will be fireworks when we are at DL in November!! Did I read somewhere that they aren't shown every night?

1. Yes, but not quite, the 405 splits from the I-5 and runs on the west side of greater LA but combines with I-5, then down in SD the 805 splits off running east of the I-5 and recombines with the 5 just before the border crossing.

2. It is true the fireworks aren't every night. But usually Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Thanks for your thoughts on Disneyland. I'm glad you had a good time. :)

::yes:: It's my favorite place in the world.

my favorite quote about virginia when we were living there was that 66 is liek nascar...but we dont watch it...we do it.

That's what I feel like living in LA. 405 and the 5 are like live nascar races everyday. Except its WORSE than I-95, I-495 and 66 combined.
At least teh DC area has a set rush hour...there are always cars on the road in LA
