I am borrowing a chocolate fountain from a friend for DD's birthday party. She is not home though and I don't know how much chocolate to go and buy!!! It is a standard home version of a chocolate fountain. All info is appreciated ASAP!!!!!

I haven't used mine in awhile. Let me think....I used to order it from a special place. The chocolate has to have something in it. But I remember reading that if you use say just milk chocolate chips that you have to add oil to it. I think because the chocolate need to stay smooth to flow properly.
Hope that helps a little.
Buy a Sara Lee pound cake to cut into small pieces to dip...YUM!!!:thumbsup2

If you have a Bed Bath and Beyond near you, they see the bags of the correct type of chocolate with all the directions on the bag. That is what we use when we use ours. I bag is more than enough for most parties.

We use fruit (strawberries, pineapple, bananas), pretzels, marshmallows, pound cake and oreos for dipping into the fountain.

When I worked at Bloomingdale's the chef (we actually had a chef on staff) would use Guittard in the fountain. I will buy their milk chocolate chips for cookies, or just to eat. I find their candy to be much nicer than Ghirardelli and at a much lower price.

I buy 3 bags of Ghiradelli milk chocolate chips (the reg sized bag). Then you add I believe it is a 1/4 cup of oil....but double check on that. I haven't used mine in awhile either, and I don't recall the exact amount of oil needed.

mamaLori is right- I buy the Costco sized bag of Ghiardelli's and add 1/4 cup oil to it.

To prep it you need to put all the chocolate chips and oil into a microwable bowl (I prefer pyrex as it's easier to clean than plastic or tupperware). Microwave it in 30 second intervals, stirring at each interval. Make sure that you do not get any water or watery liquid on your stirring spoon (ie do NOT wash the spoon in between stirs) as it will make the chocolate "break" and it will not be smooth.

It usually takes about 10 minutes of 30 second intervals to melt the whole thing. Once it is fully melted, turn the fountain on to "warm" and pour the chocolate in. After a few minutes you can turn it on an viola, chocolate fountain!:woohoo:

The most important thing to get even, continuous flow is to make sure the surface the fountain is on is perfectly level! Made the mistake of assuming a table was level one time with ours... flow was lopsided and spilled out.

You can also buy Wilton's chocolate for candy-making at Michaels. It helps when you have those 40% coupons. :)

That's what I do too.

Our PTA had one and the thing that grossed me out was how much oil we had to use! We kept adding and adding oil to get it to flow. It was fairly large but I swear it was 70% chocolate 30 % cooking oil.
