Quick! Help me choose a suitcase!

I have about 2 hours to figure out what kind of suitcase to buy, and what kinds to avoid.

Anyone have suggestions?

We need a bigger suitcase, but it has to be <62 inches total (per SWA). I prefer several inside pockets, not just the huge compartment.

Don't know what the Denier thingy means?!

Not too heavy, so I can put lots of stuff in there.

Expandable is ok, I think, if it doens't make the suitcase >62".

This was not something I budgeted for, but as we packed, we figured out our usual Large suitcase is now TOO big to bring.

I had bought a Delsey something-or-other 25" expandable, which seemed perfect I think...but had to return it today. I'd get another Delsey from a different store, if those are an ok brand. Anyone????

Poke around ebags.com. I think that site even explains denier and stuff. You can get a discount if you go there thru a mousesavers link. I have American Tourister luggage, but it wasn't cheap and it's kinda heavy. I'd love to replace it, but it's only 3 years old so I can't justify the expense.

If you have a JC Penney near you, they usually have a pretty decent luggage department and you can get great sales prices.

We're looking at some luggage today; JC Penny seems to have some nice American Tourister stuff on sale we're going to the store to see if they have them in stock.

I would never buy a large suitcase, anything over 25 inches. It is so easy to overpack it, because "nature doesn't like a void", and once you hit 50 pounds, you are going to pay the airline money you don't want to. I would prefer two 22 inch suitcases, or a 25 and a 22. I also don't like the ones with the round tops because while they look nice, you are giving up space.

This is true. I bought the 25" bags because of the measurement restrictions. Keep in mind, you may not always fly SWA and your restrictions may be less than 62". We jam pack our bags and they usually weigh in around 45 lbs. I checked out the weights the last time and the EMPTY bags were 13lbs each...that's a lot to add to your stuff.

Go for lightweight if you can...and WHEELS!!!

I wouldn't worry about the denier either. A mathmatical fact exists with regard to luggage; the more money you spend on a quality suitcase, the chances of it being destroyed by the airlines increases exponentially." Cheap suitcases never die.

I took a spurlge earlier this year at Macy's when they had these on sale of 30 or 35% off and then with the Macy's card an extra 20%. Since I travel 3 to 5 times a year and plan on more overseas travel I did some homework:

I bought the Victornix 3.0 line because it has a LIFETIME warrantany, either by you or the airport. I bought my 2 pieces for the cost of the one.

I bought the 27 inch expandable, and was very happy with it, I ended up packing way too much, so next time I know not to pack as much and have room for souvies I also bought the 20 inch(which you can take as a carry on within international travel (22 inch US travel)).

I know this choice is not for everyone. . . but I love my new luggage

Thanks all! Got a Flylite II by American Tourister. Some of their stuff I hated, but this particular model I liked. Hope I like it once I use it a few times! It was a great deal, couldn't justify the additional cost to buy ones I LOVED but this seemed like a pretty cheap, adequate substitute.

BTW, the one I REALLY loved was one of the Samsonite ones. Hated one of their lines, but LOVED another one of them. Pricey though.

I bought new lightweight luggage and was very excited about it until I got it ALL PACKED. I went to connect the two bags and discovered it did not have the "thingy" on the top of the bag so you could connect bags together with the strap - to piggyback the bags. That feature is very important to me and I didn't realizr until then that it is not a standard feature on all luggage.

Just something to look for so you are not surprised at the wrong time.

Oooo, good point. I just looked at the new suitcase I bought -- it has a big hook, but not the strap. Now I might have to figure out how I am supposed to hook another bag to that hook.

I am apparently not luggage-literate.
