DH and DS are starting a Tai Kwon Do class this evening. DH wants to know if it's ok to wear a white t-shirt (undershirt) under his uniform. Also, there's a thin elastic band attached to the inside of his shirt. What's that for?

DS (black belt) says there is one inside and one outside to adjust the fit on the uniform. He used to wear a short sleeve t shirt underneath. In fact his school sold them and allowed that to be the uniform top except for during competitions and tournament. I wish he would go back. He was getting pretty good at it. BTW I used to get cheaper supplies, weapons and gifts like bags for gear at karate depot on line.

We weren't too sure about that elastic either! DD only had one on the inside, plus a button on the other side, so we just stretched it across her stomach underneath the top and buttoned it. And she wears all kinds of shirts under her uniform top. Sometimes different colors and sometimes just white.

She loves TKD. I've never seen her so intent on learning anything.

DH wears a t-shirt under his uniform, but the boys don't. That strap is to adjust the uniform.

DH and our boys go to TKD together, it has been a great experience for them. :goodvibes :goodvibes Your son and your husband are going to love doing this together. What a great dad and son experience! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

I agree with the others. My DS(11) is a Black Belt and his school also lets them wear t-shirts instead of their Gi (sp) top unless it is a rank test or competition day.

It is a great sport. It works really well for my DS who is kinda a computer geek and not into team sports. It has made sure he doesn't turn into a overweight adolescent.

I hope your kids love it.

Thanks everyone. DH was way more comfortable with an undershirt on. He has a lot of chest hair. :rotfl: I hope they have a good time. DS has been doing an after school class for about 8 weeks and he likes it ok. He's 5, so he's always changing his mind. DH has always wanted to take TKD so I think this will be fun for both of them.

We were always allowed to wear a t-shirt during class and only had to wear the Gi during tests or competitions. We didn't have to wear white t-shirts, they were fine witn any color as long as it was neatly tucked in and you had your belt tied correctly.

My DD wears a T shirt under her Gi. Her's top has strings on either side to tie but since it's a little big on her if she didn't wear the T-shirt she would be ....um....exposed.

Oh Gosh. They just got home and DH injured himself already. One the first day. He did something to his knee and the instructor gave him some stretches to do. I certainly hope this doesn't last too long.

Hey I have another question. My son was "invited" to test for his yellow belt. Is this optional usually? DH thinks it is and he would rather they test at the same time, so they can move up together. To clarify, my son's been taking classes at his school for 8 weeks. Now that the after school program is over, he and DH started together at the actual studio. So tonight was DS's 9th class, but DH's first class.

Hmm... I would think that they could test anytime after they were asked. I don't know because my school (American Tae Kwon Do is our style) has set quarterly tests; everyone tests at the same time. Makes for better organization and a big party! :thumbsup2

When my DS gets "invited" to test that usually means that he WILL be testing on such-n-such date. I didn't ever get the feeling that he had much choice in the matter. They never had them test unless they were ready to pass the test. As they tested for the higher belts (green, brown,&black) they gave them plenty of warning. For the black belt he had a month of at home workouts to do so that he would be in the best condition to rank up.

I'm sorry your DH got hurt. My DH tried to take the classes also but he got some ribs broken during one of his training matches. After that he thought that he might just be getting older than he cared to admit!!

The first couple belts were pretty quick.White and yellow and I dont think DS did those as a big deal but as they move up there is a lot of ceremony involved. It is really cool to see how quick the kids learn.DS broke a board his first day and he was hooked.he loves weapons and forms but doesnt like sparring much.

OK, I will have DH ask on Friday when they have class. Since DS has been taking it for a few weeks already he can test up to the yellow belt. But DH wants to wait so they can both test together. Although maybe it's a moot point since DH is injured anyway. From what DH tells me, the white belts are all together in one room and everyone else is in another room. And DS was the only kid in the white belt class. Maybe we'll just have him test and then DH can just catch up later. Thanks everyone!

Everyone in our school just cuts that elastic string out! :goodvibes

If DS has been invited to test you should let him. He wouldnt be asked if the instructor didnt think he was ready and its really not fair to him to hold him back just because DH started later. They have a set curriculum and DS has learned these skillls and needs to go on to his next set of skills.

Good luck!!
