and has become hysterical about the pain. Of course she was fine yesterday at school (it was diagnosed at 5:00 p.m. yesterday) and she was fine all day today, but now that I'm home she's hysterical from the pain...I'm ready to drive her to the hospital (one block away).

I've offered her Alleve, tea, honey, tea with honey, popicles, ice cream, ginger ale, a humidifer, a special mouthwash from the dr. and a warm salt water gargle. She has taken the Alleve and that's it.

Soo, what can I give this hysterical 12 year old? At this point I would give her a shot of Whiskey if I had any, hell I'd take a shot too!

Sucrets or the spray that's numbs? that would be a huge help.

Hope your DD is feeling better soon!:)

DGD just brought home a notice from her school today that they are having quite an outbreak of strep and advising all parents to keep their children home if they are showing any symptoms whatsoever.. Has your DD been seen by a doctor? If so, I would call his/her service and see if they could call in something to the pharmarcy for the pain..

Strep is horrible.. You don't want to swallow at all...:sad2:

Hope she feels better soon..

I forgot to add yes she does have sucrets (spelling?) and she is on antiboditics since last night. I have also offered her lollipops and nope, she doesn't want those either.

I might get flamed but what about one Tylenol PM. I think you have offered all the good choices. I have found that Tylenol helps me better than Alieve with achy sick type stuff. Or you could add lemon & honey to that whiskey & warm it a bit in the Mirco;)

humm- I'm stumped. You have a real stubborn one there don't you? Right about now; if I were you I'd go the tea/w honey route and a slash of whiskey added. And I'd stand there and make her drink -or tell her a trip to the hosp ER is next-where they will put an IV in and take some blood. Just might work. Good luck!

Chloroseptic spray

or lozenges

Both of them numb the throat with benzocaine

I'd give her a tylenol pm or a benedryl, put her to sleep and she'll feel better tomorrow.

Ice chips or ice water too. Keep her hydrated.

Sore throat spray - instant relief...

This is actually worth driving to the store in the middle of a snow storm in the situation you describe. Heck.. maybe even worth walking in the snow storm! Sit on her if you have to, just get some in there and she'll love you forever!

Strep hurts really bad.

Have you taken a flashlight and looked at her throat? Does it look like the tonsils aren't symmetrical or that the uvula is not midline? If it does you should probably call your pediatrician.

I was lucky to have strep throat on my last WDW trip. I tried everything to kill the pain, tylenol, throat spray, Motrin, etc. nothing worked except Nyquil if you can believe it.

Whatever is in Nyquil was the only thing that took away most of my pain.

I agree on the Nyquil. It'll help. I've had strep twice already and ick.....

When I was a kid, I would get strep throat every other week, it's terrible. We used to buy the Vicks spray by the case because I went through so much of it, it was the only thing that would help. I would also spray way more often than the recommended, but it really was the only thing that helped. Sucking on lozenges didn't help because you don't want to swallow.

If she won't do the lollipops, I'd go for the pain reliever. Sucrets and chloraseptic will work, but they have such a nasty taste. We just went through this with DD last week and we found out she was allergic to amoxycillin. Great weekend, I tell you. Hang in there.

I think as a mom, I often forget that a trip to the drs and antibiotics does not mean my child will get better right away. It often gets worse before it gets better. SO try not freak out and try to take her mind off of it somehow, because being upset will make her throat hurt worse.

Heck, try lots of the things mentioned on here! Get some ice cream and pops!

Hang in there!! (of course if she is not better soon, take her back. but remember, they often get worse before they get better!)

I had strep in Nov. and I can totally sympathize with your DD - the 3 days following the antibiotics were pure misery. I rounded up every vicodin in the house from all family members and I took them. Also, otter pops. I would lay flat in bed with an otter pop stuck as far down my throat as I could get it. Nothing hot and no dairy, seemed to make it worse. My DH also brought me slurpies and added vodka to them.

Lots of pain reliever and call your ped and see if you can get a liquid pain killer like they give kids with tonsilectomies. I hope she feels better soon.

I hadn't slept for a week and a half before I went to the doctor. Thought I had strep, but it turns out I had a bad case of bronchitis. My throat was raw. My doctor gave me an antibiotic and asked if I wanted something to help me sleep. Cough syrup with codeine :thumbsup2 I've never had such a good sleep and the coughing has finally stopped.
