can the school give a child an unexcused absence if they hold school on a sat. and only give parents a 2 day notice?

I ask b/c my bro kids school did just that and we have plans for sat., have had them for a long time and it means a great deal to us..anyway sil called the school and explained it to them and they said it would be unexcused??? I don't get it, can she fight it??

thanks :goodvibes

I don't have kids, so maybe I just don't know how it works, but if a parent calls in the absence, how can it be "unexcused?"

I am not sure, but if our kids school decided to open on Saturday, our boys wouldn't be there - excused or unexcused. Weekends are family time, not school time.

I have never heard of a school doing this... :confused3

I've never heard of school on Saturdays, but if the school holds regular classes on Saturdays, then yes, it would be unexcused. Why didn't they just call him in sick? Now they threw themselves on the radar!

Unless its a Saturday detention, I'm not sure they can consider this as unexcused. Are you sure it was just on the calendar 2 days ago? What's the explanation for having Saturday classes? It makes no sense. :confused3

it's b/c we missed so many snow days but heck take spring break, I know it would suck but to give people 2 day notice for a sat???

In our schools an absence is unexcused if you don't have a doctor's note.

In our school district it would be an unexused absence, but seriously, as long as they are not in a school district that sends parents to jail, your brother shouldn't worry. My kids have unexcused absences and it really means nothing.

We bought tickets to take my DD to a play. Tickets are for 3/12. It's a snow make up day. Guess what? They're having school that day because they missed school for snow. We have 3 choices: eat the price of the tickets, call her in sick, tell the school she won't be there and take the unexcused.

We're taking the unexcused.

It's one day. What's the big deal if it's unexcused?

I wouldn't care. I'd just tell them that my boys wouldn't be there. 1 days absence is meaningless...

it's b/c of snow days like I said but yes they just told parents when they picked them up from school yesterday..I don't count yesterday as the day is already gone by the time they got the notice..

that is what she is doing, I don't blamer her but I don't understand why they are giving unexcused absences?? sorry it just doesn't make since? if they wanted to do a make up day on a sat why a two day notice? why not do it in a month? kwim

A school can do whatever they want when it comes to absences. If they are holding classes on SAT and they say you need a doctors note to get an unexcused absence then they can do that.

I got 1 nasty gram for my dd last semester and already got another one this semester.

Now once the flu hit last semester, I made sure to take her to the doctor and document every appointment and missed day as best as I could. I still got the nasty gram however if they take me to the carpet I can prove her absences were necessary.

Now that's just not right!! :sad2: I would just call and tell them that due to the short notice, their absence would be unexecused. Enjoy your day with your family! ;)

I would just take the absence. I'm waiting to see what they are going to do at my kids school. We had 2 snow days. One of them will be made up the Friday before Memorial day-that was on the calendar already as only being off if we had no snow days. As for the other one, I'm hearing they may take a day off of Spring Break. If they do, my kids will not be there. I don't understand why the schools didn't put in a few extra days in case of snow:confused3 I mean, we live in NY...NY gets snow.

Wow. That stinks.
I think I'd just have them take the Unexcused. Since it was just announced yesterday, it's not like the teachers would have any tests planned or anything that they would have to take zeroes on. Heck, I'd bet even all of the teachers aren't there, given the short notice.

She is not sending them as it is my gma's 85th bday party which has been planned for a while now...I just don't get why they expect the kids to be there on a sat with just a 2 day notice..this is where I'm getting hung up on...:sad2:

I'm guessing that it will be an unexcused absence. Our school district sends home an agenda at the beginning of every year explaining what absences are excused, and which are not. Basically, anything dealing with an illness, a doctor's appointment, a death in the family are covered. Everything else, is "unexcused". If you ask me, there are some grey areas in between that need to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. And one of those grey areas would include your situation.

I set a very high ethical standard for my kids which includes no lying. So, last week, my kids had a 2-hr delay. School started at 10 am, and they go to lunch at 11:30 am. They already had a previously scheduled appointment that I had to pick them up at school immediately after lunch. So, since they'd only have 1 1/2 hours of school, I decided to let them stay home the whole day. Next day, I sent in a note explaining why the girls were off. It was ruled to be "unexcused". Sometimes I think parents have lost all power to make personal decisions for their children, where school is involved. I understand that the rules are in place to prevent chronic absences/unexecused absences, but that was my DDs first absence ALL year. This was obviously not a case of trying to take advantage of the system.

As a result, I must admit, if a similar situation like this comes up again, I may be tempted to lie and have it be excused, than to tell the truth and have it unexcused. :sad2:

See I'm thinking the same thing..why didn't they PLAN this better..how many kids do you think will be there? ;)
