Sometimes, I lay around and wonder. Things like:

*What is the average life expectancy of a sumo wrestler?
*What is the purpose of earwax, and how does the ear make it?
*What the heck is Prince William's last name?
*What is the origin of the word "cowlick"?
*Are there laws about what you can name your child? Can you name a child a swear word?

What do you wonder?

My MIL named her cat a swear word - does that count? ;)

Who made up the name butler?
Why are they called butlers?
Why are men butlers, but women maids?
Do some people actually want to be butlers?
Do they wake up one morning like, "I want to be a butler!"?

We actually had an entire discussion about this in class today.

How can your body produce so much snot when you have a cold and why don't you eventually blow it all out?

Sorry, gross, but it's what I wonder about!

Aww, I think my poor thread may have set some kind of record for fastest trip to page 8.

Anybody else wonder silly things, or actually have any answers?

Here's an answer to Prince William's last name-

The royal family is known as the House of Windsor. This was adopted in 1917, and before that there was no general use of any family name, though strictly they were Saxe-Coburg Gotha after the death of Queen Victoria, and Hanover before that (exactly what family name the House of Hanover had has never really been settled). Under the Tudors and Stuarts the family or house name was more commonly used.

Strictly a member of the Royal Family who is a prince or princess doesn't have a surname, and it is only with the arrival of more distant members of the family without royal titles that the issue arises. In Continental royal families everyone is a prince or princess, in the House of Windsor only the children and grandchildren, and the eldest son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales, are so styled. So we now have people like Lord Nicholas Windsor, son of the Duke of Kent (and a great-grandson of King George V), who use the family name Windsor.

Since 1960 the rule has been that descendants of Queen Elizabeth II shall bear the suurname Mountbatten-Windsor, though the Royal Family remains officially the House of Windsor. This new surname will only appear with the grandchildren (if any, and in the male line) of Prince Harry.

Sorry, it was me. I won't post anymore!

Who figured out how to eat crabs and lobster?

Lobsters used to be so plentiful here that in the past at low tide the "poor" people would go to the shore and pick them up. They were also fed to the prisoners because "respectable" people didn't eat them. My oh my how times have changed!

She asked how! Seagulls pick them up and drop them on rocks!

Why do things move so fast here? :earboy2:

I wonder what will happen if I get a flat on my beer cart. :teeth:

Who came up with the names for the various colors?

Why did/do coffee producers feel the need to add formaldehyde to their product?

How does your brain keep track of all of the information you have acquired over an entire lifetime?

Why do children have to learn to write cursive (aside from their signature) when everything they ever have to fill out in their entire lives will say, PLEASE PRINT?

Why does the drive-up window at the bank have instructions in braille? :confused3

Ooh, thanks for the Royal last name info! One question down, zillions left in my brain ;)

Regarding the lobster question, I often wonder who first decided to eat a lot of things. Was someone just hanging out in a field one day, saw a cow, and thought "Mmm, that looks mighty tasty! Especially between a bun and with a side of fries!"

Don't you think the narrator in the song Jimmy, crack corn REALLY does care, and is like a early stalker getting all up in Jimmy's business? Or is he more like Rainman and a more modern lyric would be "Jimmy, watch Wapner, and I don't care".

I wanna know what was going through the head of the first person to look at a cow and say "See that cow over there? I'm gonna go grab it's ****, squeeze, then drink whatever comes outta it!"

I want to know who found out you could get high licking certain toads. Did they just start licking wildlife and sit back for a few minutes "Nope, that one didn't do anything for me" and move on, or was there some kind of research involved.

Ok you brought up the farm animals...
Who thought yeah if I eat that white thing that comes out of a chickens butt it would be tasty...

Sorry I have this rule that meat, eggs, and dairy come from the supermarket in little styrofoam containers/plastic jugs...can't process further than that or I get grossed out!!!

Who was the first person to let their grape juice ferment? Can you imagine that first 'dinner party?' All these innocents come over to the cave and end up sloshed!
