We are planning a trip for Jan. 2007 and may be interested in renting points, but I'm not sure where to look for an explanation of how that system works. Can someone help me out and tell me where I can find a thread with an explanation? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First of all, there is no real "system" for renting points. It's just individual owners who choose to rent out point rather than use them for their own trip. If you go to the DVC rent/trade board on this forum, you will see a lot of "ads" for both points and reservations for rent.

I believe there is also an informational thread in a sticky at the top of that page.

Basically, you are paying an amount for a reservation that will be made by the owner for you. Most owners charge between $10 and $15 a point. To find out the number of points needed for your stay, you can visit the point charts at the top of this page. They are different for each resort and for the different times of the year.

Since you are not a member, the points actually are worthless to you. What you are really doing is getting a member to make a reservation for you at a DVC or other resort using their points. They maintain full control over the reservation until the moment you check in. This is a private transaction between you and the member and Disney is not and will not be involved in any way.

Read the FAQs on the Rent/Trade Board and see if this is for you. Don't wait too long because members without the home advantage will be able to make reservations at their non-home resorts in just a month for January.
