Questions on the golf courses?

My DH has always wanted to golf while down in WDW. I thought while we were there on our trip in August, we would make the effort to do it. Has anyone golfed a the courses and which would you recommend for an avid golfer (DH), non golfer (DW) and 2 DS's ages 9 & 7 ( who have golfed on a 9 hole course)?
Can you rent the clubs? How much? What transportation would we use? We are staying at the AKL and would not have a car. Any help or suggestions would greatly be appreciated.
Thanks, Tamra :)

There are five 18 hole courses and one nine hole course. They are (if I remember correctly) The Palm and Magnolia, Eagle Pines and Osprey Ridge, and Lake Buena Vista. All are very good courses. The nine hole course in Oak Trail and they only allow walking and no carts. To get to any course just tell the front desk and they will give you a Taxi voucher and call the cab for you. The pro shop at the course will give you a voucher to get back to your hotel and call the cab for you on that end. The have club rentals that vary by quality and I don't remember the cost. The fees can be steep but if you are going in the summer book the afternoon rates as they are much cheaper because of the heat (if you can stand it). Living in the Houston area and playing all summer here means the heat does not bother me. Have fun.

DH has golfed at every course several times, and he'll be golfing every day of our upcoming trip. If you have a mix of abilities in your group, I'm very much a fan of the 9 hole course. Many years ago, DH (whose handicap is 1-2) and DS (who'd never golfed) played that course. They both really liked the course, so I think any course that can keep 2 extremes of abilities interested is a good one. Another one that's not too expensive (for Disney) and pretty enjoyable (for most) is Lake Buena Vista. Be aware, though, that some people are intimidated by it being surrounded by housing. And DMIL thought it had too much water when she played it! Eagle Pines is a beautiful course, and from what I understand, not as difficult as its "sister course", Osprey Ridge, which is probably the most challenging. Here's a link to a great golf site with lots of info: www.wdwgolf.com
Sorry I can't help you with rental clubs or transportation issues-DH has a rental car and he always brings his clubs (he says that's all he needs to go to WDW is his clubs).

My DH and DS10 and DS 12 played the Oak Trail course last August. Both of the boys are beginners. My DH found the course to be challenging(not a jr. course-but a 9 hole course with some good length to it). They went off at 7:30 am. The heat and humidity were almost unbearable. The rates for Oak Trail are lower than the other courses. I believe that the kids club rentals were free and my husband's were pretty inexpensive as well. Have fun!

Thanks for all the replies and the information. My DH sd this morning he is hestitate to pay the $$ especially for me since I am not a golfer and that I may not have fun. I told him that how could I not have fun when I am in WDW. I told him that it was up to him, so we shall see what happens.
Thanks again, Tamra :)

Why doesn't he just go golf by himself? That's what my DH does. You and the kids can hit a park or maybe do a movie, go to the pool, DTD... you'll find something fun to fill your time!

Kewz has a good idea. I am single dad who takes his DD to WDW every other year. Sometimes she goes with one of her aunts for the day and I catch up later. Other times she goes with me and rides in the cart. She is 12.

As far as the 9 hole course. My DB-in-Law and I golfed there last November. We did a quick nine before breakfast, and found it enjoyable as well as challenging. After our round, we met up with my DD and her aunt before heading off to the parks for the day.

Tell you DH to enjoy himself at the course. :wizard:

:thumbsup2 Agree with above posters!!! Let him go alone and you and kiddo's hang out!! That's what we are doing. DH is playing the Magnolia course this Sept. while DS and I relax by the pool........ YEP, at AKL!!!!!!!!!

Have Fun!!
