The hubby and I are thinking about buying into DVC and I was wondering what all the fuss is about. Most DVC members love DVC and I just want to know what's so great???

If we do this, we may rent out for the first few years to help out with the cost as we have use of a house in Orlando for the time being.

Anyone use DVC to travel to other places? What are the perks?

I think for many, we have different reasons why DVC is right for us but here are a few reasons why I like it and gave into my wife and bought AKV and trying to buy VWL.

1. WDW - I like vacationing there because there is always something to do. I have never been a beach sitter vacationer. During the day you have the obviously 4 parks but also the water parks, great golf, nice themed resorts to explore, good weather (too hot in the summer) and plenty of quick drive destinations like other Orlando parks, the beach, or KSC, etc.

2. At night you have a endless selection of good restaurants to choose from and with DVC you even have a kitchen to stay in a night and use. Also you are a short drive to hundreds of non-WDW restaurants, bars, clubs, etc.

3. DVC rooms are much bigger than traditional hotel and comparable to other time shares

4. Disney service IMO is top notch and better than other time shares. We own 4 Marriott's and outside of HI, the Disney service has been better than any of them

5. Final and best - another reason to visit the mouse :woohoo:

BTW: Not sure you really want to use DVC as your gateway to other destinations... You can get a good II or RCI trader to explore the world with for much less than DVC. This is why we own both DVC and Marriott...

While there are trade outs through Interval International and Buena Vista Trading, most DVCer's will agree that DVC is best used for repeated trips to WDW or DVC resorts (Hilton Head, SC, Vero Beach, FL, California and upcoming Hawaii). You'll get the most for your money by visiting your home resort (at the 11th month window), and the other DVC resorts (at the 7 month booking window).

Most DVCer's love visiting WDW as much as possible, and this is where the value of owning DVC comes in. I'm saying "most" because I'm sure there are those out there who use DVC to trade out, perhaps someone can post their experiences with that.

For us DVC makes alot of sense because it is our favorite place to vacation, therefore we do make repeated trips, as well as the fact that DH won't fly, and this is a reachable destination by car. I do fly, and love to come to WDW with my friends - once or twice a year. Now that my kids are older, they'll be able to do the same when their schedules allow for it - so it makes alot of sense for us.

Good luck with your decision....

For people that visit WDW very often (and plan to for the next couple decades) and always like to stay in disney resorts, it makes a lot of sense, financially, in the long run.

If you don't fit into that category, I'd strongly urge you to think about it carefully. Keep in mind that Disney is a master of marketing genius and can make you want, even need, to spend a lot of money on stuff that can be had elsewhere for a lot less.

Just my two cents.

Do NOT buy into DVC until you can answer this for yourself. Remember that a timeshare is not a money-making investment. DVC has the power to make all the members of a busy family STOP! And spend the week with all the other members of a family, having a good time, and becoming closer together. I love DVC, it's like a part of our family: when I sold one of my contracts, I cried over the sale until I found out that it was going to a good DIS family!!:rotfl2:

DVC is one of the best things we have ever done for ourselves. I was looking through our trip (just 3 so far) envelope and DVC souveniors and just smiled looking at all that DVC stuff.
All of the stuff listed in the above posts is what make it great for us but the other thing is, it just makes me so darn happy!

If you will be taking out a loan with interest, then renting it out, don't. It'll still be around when you're ready to actually buy to use it. If you plan to use it to trade, don't. There are many timeshares with trade power that's the same or better and which will get you where you plan to vacation for a fraction of the price, on a good resale purchase. Visit TUG - Timeshare Users Group - and learn more before plunking down your money on a trading timeshare.

Buying DVC is an expensive, luxury purchase. If you can easily afford it and you plan to use it instead of paying cash to stay at Disney hotels, then it may make perfectly good sense and make you very happy. So many here can attest to that. But if that doesn't describe you, look at all the other ways to enjoy your Disney vacations!!! And take your time before investing your hard-earned money in something that you don't even plan to use yourself for a few years off. A lot can change in that time.

In My opinion You have to do it because you love it! Not so much for the perks and not for investment. For 50 yrs of Disney you can enjoy . Kids will grow and may lose interest. But I feel you should love it to buy it. I for years planned each trip when I got back from one. I realize I should have been a dvcer long ago. :thumbsup2

We get to go to WDW more than once a year now, instead of every 2 to 3 years. We are also very excited to go to WDW more often. Its a dream come true. With DVC and APs - you cut your expenses in half and can go twice as often for the same price, and if you like to cook, you can get even more mileage out of it. DVC also has a way of bringing you closer to family, as you make time for vacations and invite extended familly to come along.

If going to WDW doesn't float your boat, don't purchase DVC.

It took us two years to decide to buy into the DVC. Our kids are 1 and 3, so it makes perfect sense for us. We liek staying at the deluxe hotels, but they are so much money. Now we can stay at beautiful resorts that are pre-paid essentially. We will be taking our first DVC trip in May, with our extended family. Staying in 3 bedroom, that would be about $1350 a night, but as a DVC member we pay nothing. Of course we are paying for it initially since we took out a loan, but it pays for itself in the first few vacations. It is nice to be able to take some family with you.

We bought DVC because we want to vacation there and nowhere else. We have been going once a year or so. All our family and frends say that when they go to WDW they think of us. Now that we own DVC they all say we should have done this sooner. We now are looking at 2 vacations a year.
We love the Disney smell, sound, feel and more when we stay. We have a CM son that is over the top with Disney. When he finishes college he has already told us he's moving and going to work full time for WDW.
If you are as nutz as we are about WDW and Disney overall and you can afford it do it!!! If it's something you'll not use yourself than don't.
The people who love DVC love Disney and will enjoy it for a long long time!
