Questions for beagle owners

Another OT. Please forgive...

I was wondering, for you beagle and beagle mix owners, approximately how long was 'puppy stage'? We have an 11 month old beagle who is completely bonkers, and I'd love to know how old your beagles and mixes were when they started to act like they had a little sense about them?

What a beautiful dog and he does look purebred to me.

First thing to have the vet check is his thyroid level function. Low thyroid is common in beagles and tends to show up at a fairly young age.

It could account for his low energy and being overweight.

Thyroid med for dogs is taken daily and very low cost.

Good luck!

Good to know! Thanks!

The thing that sticks out is beagles (and bassets) are a barking breed. They bark at everything, and if you leave them outside all day, and you have neighbors, it could be an issue.

They are also a howling breed. I had a Beagle many years ago and Oh my lord did she howl. :scared1:

Thanks so much for sharing all your beagle stories! It sounds like Gus may not be not be too far outside the norm afterall. Hopefully, with a good diet and some exercise, he'll slim down a bit and have a little more energy. Honestly, this dog runs in slow motion - it's hilarious to watch!:lmao:

I'm still amazed that his owners never claimed him from the shelter. He was obviously well cared for. He was neutered, house broken, and leash trained. He was picked up as a stray and kept at the shelter for 8 days and no one ever inqured about him. So sad to think someone just didn't want him anymore.

And for ckay87, here is Annabelle, my doxie/beagle mix. She is bossy, stubborn, and somewhat obnoxious and I love her to pieces! She has a definite beagle voice and is not afraid to use it! ;)

That's how my Charley is. I'm still always shocked. I say I got him pre-trained. He was perfect - the one and only time he had an accident in the house (my husband and I both had to work late, and expected one) he did pee...... right in front of the toilet. Crazy.

But I wanted to mention 'exceptions to rules'. Again, my Charley is quiet as heck. Barely barks. I've said a million times, if someone broke in, they'd be in for a very big surprise when they came into the living room and sprawled out on the couch was 85 pounds of puuuuure muscle. ;) - He's calm, laid back, so easy going and the energy level of a sloth. Get him outside, he runs a bit and then plops down. Which is completely opposite of what he "should" be.

So, enjoy Gus and his laid back-ness. I think Charley is a waaaaaay easier dog than Hazel, the non-stop "run through the house like I drank 12 - 12 hour energy shots" monster dog. :upsidedow ;)

See the one below, on the right in my signature... he's only half beagle, but mixed with the english bulldog, he is the laziest thing I've ever seen. He takes naps after wearing himself out napping- he concentrates on his naps while sleeping.

I take him outside near a squirrel, and he finds his energy though.

And he's got both voices, believe me... he chooses to use the beagle voice very often, when the bull voice comes out we are always shocked... and then we check the doors to make sure there isn't an intruder.

Your new guy is so cute. Good luck with him.

When we got our 6 mo. old lab from the shelter a few years ago he was so quiet and mellow for about the first week but once he got used to us and his new surroundings......boy did he perk up!!!!

um he just turned 5 at thanksgiving and he still has no sense. it's not happening for us. but at least he is cute enough to make up for it.

I don't have a beagle but from reading the Pioneer Womans' descriptions of her beagle, I always thought they could be sort of lazy if given the chance! ;)

He's a cutie, congratulations on the new addition!

Do you mean her basset hound? I don't think she has a beagle.

(And yes, bassets can be the laziest dogs on earth!)

Update:
He has energy! :yay:
My daughter brought her Corgi over to play and they are now chasing each other round and round the yard and Gus is actually keeping up! I sense a long nap coming on when they are done! ;)
