DH and I are thinking of doing the World's Longest Yard Sale" that strectches from Alabama To Ohio. We will be driving from Rhode Island and are looking for places to stay and eat, and things to do along the way.

Would like to hear from folks in these areas or those that have done this trip in previous years.

Thanks for your help.

DMIL had DH take her to the part that hits here in KY. They both said that there was some neat stuff, but there was also a lot of junk. They did come home with a really cool toy car for DS. It looks like an old style roadster type car (imagine the kind that someone would be driving while wearing goggles and a scarf) with pedals. It was really neat and cheaper than you can buy a ride on car from any catalog.

OHhhhh that is what my DH and I want to do sometime. It looks AMAZING!!!!! I'll be watching this thread! :thumbsup2

I am so tempted to try this. I will be visiting my brother in NC in August, so it would be a nice side trip to take. I collect older toys -but like others said, I am afraid to find mainly junk and nothing that I really want! But it sounds like something to try at least once if you enjoy garage-saling and antiquing.

Sadly I have a small car so even if I went, I couldn't buy much!

We hit Crossville TN one day a few years ago. It was exhausting. I bet every hotel any where near any city is booked solid from all the vendors.

I've thought about going back, but there is just too much stuff to wade through to find the things I would actually buy.

We live in KY and the first year we headed south until we got tired, but the trouble was no where to stay (we had thrown the tent and some stuff in the truck) and finally found a campground south of Crossville, TN.

The second trip we got to around crossville, tn again and we headed off onto route 40 towards pigeon forge and finally found a hotel.

The trips after this were just day trips and back home. It is a great time, you would find it amazing if you have never done it before. However, have a plan... look at a map and reserve a hotel. Highway 127 is not a major road and goes through a lot of small towns that do not have a lot of hotels.

We have purchased items each trip, it's just what are you looking for....if you have never made the trip before it is worth it one time to try it.

By the way Crossville, Tn is like the meca..it is wild in that area.

have fun but plan.

the world's longest yard sale ends in my hometown, gadsden, alabama. if you come this far, you must visit noccalula falls. we have tons of great restaurants, as well as the usual fast food (burger king, wendy's, chik-fil-a, etc.). if you decide to spend the night, i would recommend the hampton inn on rainbow drive. my SIL is quite picky about everything, and that's where they always stay when they visit.

We did the leg of 127 from Frankfort, KY to Danville, KY and it took all day with stopping at 10% of the sale locations at most. Traffic is bad, but 127 is 4 lanes in the section we travelled, so not too bad.

As for lodging, there are several chains in Frankfort and Danville, KY. In southern KY, there are a few mom and pop locations in Russell Springs, and some lodging at the parks around Lake Cumberland-a quick 20 minute drive out the Cumberland Parkway would put you in Somerset, where there are a good 10-12 chain hotels.

Come with a plan and lots of room to put things. We saw quite a few pickups and trailers hauling bought goods from the sale.

Okay, you are now entering my stomping ground. LOL, we live in north Alabama. The yard sale runs across Lookout Mtn. about 10 miles from us. If you are looking for a place to stay try Ft. Payne, Alabama. We have several safe great hotels right off of I-59. If these are booked, we have a new Best Western about 6 miles off the interestate on Hwy 35 (4 lane) in my hometown of Rainsville. Really safe area. I love shopping this every year and there are so many folks from all over the U.S. that comes in for this.

Thanks for all of your replies. We're really looking forward to going to the yard sales and taking in the sites along the way.
