I was just wondering if the beach was for show or can you really swin in the water? The whole brain amoeba thing has me freaked out. Any input would be great!

When we first camped in Fort Wilderness about 30 years ago, you could swim at the beach. Sadly that is no longer the case, and I do not know when swimming was discontinued. But there is now a campground pool which was not originally available, and it is great fun to rent the small speedboats on the lake.

florida lake water....hhhmmm....20 foot massive beast gators....

even if we could swim in it, i'd be at the pool! I need to be able to see my toes! Way too many horror movies as a kid!!! popcorn::

I remember when we used to be able to swim in it, and all the other lakes around here, but i was young and fearless, and I never recalled hearing about man eating gators back then! :sad2::sad2:

Thats good to know. Up here in MI we dont have to spend much time looking for the large man eating animals in the water....

In 1 month it will be our first trip to FW Campground. Hopefully the pool will be done and we can at least go in that.

Something seems familiar here ? :rolleyes1

I think I had heard smothing about bactiria levels in the lake.Don't remember where I heard that from. Disney also removes gators that show up.

A CM told us the amoeba story many years ago - but I understand that it is only a problem after long hot spells, i.e., around August time. When we were at the Wilderness Lodge 5 years ago, in May, we were told that 'paddling' was OK at the beach, and that the water was clean. However, after 'paddling' for just a short time, a patrol boat showed up and asked us to get out of the water - they claimed gators were the concern.

Why do the gators always get all the publicity on these threads,,it really is a RARE occurrence that anyone see's a gaotor at Disney.(and I have)

What about the turtles at Disney ??? Nobody cares about turtles ??? Thay don't call'em SNAPPERS for nutt'n !!! And they can get to be GIANT in size !
I have seen them as big-round as a 55 gal. barrel,,(not at WDW) but I have seen them.

Turtle,,,,,,,Mmmmmmmmmm, anyone besides me like turtle?

The amoeba problem is only an issue in the warmer months when the average water temp approaches 80F. They still do the triathalon in the lakes when it's cooler.

There are alligators in the lakes and canal systems. Larger ones are periodically caught and relocated. In Florida wherever there is fresh water you can assume there are gators around somewhere.

If you listen (as I do) to the weekly Dis podcasts, Webmaster Pete Werner always closes the show with, "and remember, Stay Out of the Damn Lakes".

Wow, you guys are great! :worship: Thankyou for the advice.......I think we will stay out of the water, just to be safe!
I will keep my eye out for those gators or beer stealing otters!;)

when I was down there in '99, River Country wasn't closed down yet but was closed for periods at a time. A CM at Typhoon lagoon advised me it was due to the fact that River country used lake water for all of its attractions. This was in the same time that I noticed the lakes were beginning to get closed to swimming. The gators---

Go down to the marinar with a flashlight about 4am and shine it out on the lake if the water is flat. Check out all of the orange eyes. Usually the most are towards the marsh by the nature trail.
