Questions about Teppan Edo

I finally got my kids to eat more than pizza, chicken nuggets and grilled cheese by taking them to a Japanese Hibachi Steakhouse. They love watching the cook, and will eat shrimp and even fried rice.

With that in mind, we have reservations at Teppan Edo. But I have some questions. First, is it Hibachi style with the cooks preparing your meal at the table? It sure appears that way, but I wanted to make sure. Second, do they have fried rice or can you get fried rice? From the on-line menus, it looks like there is steamed rice, but I wonder if you can get fried rice. My kids love it and it would be nice if Teppan Edo served it.

Thanks in advance.

When I go to Teppan Edo this October, it will be exactly twice that I have been there.

It was hibatchi style. I only remember steamed rice.

They do cook the food at your table, but as far as I know, only steamed rice is served. I think the justification comes from the fact that steamed rice is served in traditional grills in Japan and WS strives to be as authentic as possible.

I asked our server out of curiosity a few visits ago, and yes only steamed rice is available.

1. Yes, it's a hibachi restaurant.

2. Fried rice is not available. Steamed rice only. Teppan Edo is owned and operated by a Japanese company, so they are serving in the traditional Japanese style (fried rice isn't Japanese).

They don't have fried rice, as pp have stated. Maybe you could just add some of the sauces they give you to the rice and they will think it is something new and exciting to try. You won't be disappointed in Teppan Edo, it is a must for us each trip.

We love hibachi but we are opting to do other ts places in Epcot because

1. my kids only want fried rice and are used to it at hibachi places.
2. Even on dxdp you only get soup or salad but not both (normally included at hibachi)
3. We can do it in town but so many other places are really more unique.

My biggest concern is that my kids will be disappointed that they do not get all the things they do in town :confused3

Thanks for all the replies. We'll keep the reservations, but I want to give the kids the heads up.

1. Actually its a Teppanyaki style restaurant I'm not sure why they started calling them hibachi style since I have never seen an hibachi in one.

2. This part is strange because Teppanyaki style restaurants were first started in 1945 to sell Japanese style food to American GI's. I'm pretty sure the only Teppanyaki places you will find in Japan are around the US military bases and only cater to Americans. So I find it strange to see the words traditional Japanese style on something so new. When the store there has been around for 500 years.

Though I had heard that fried rice is Chinese and not Japanese and that why its not served.

Well, that's what they say, it's a Japanese restaurant run by Japanese and they don't serve fried rice because it isn't Japanese.

For interesting information, the Benihana of Tokyo does have at least one restaurant in Tokyo; there it is called Benihana of New York.

And it would not hurt to ask the tableside chef if he could do some fried rice; the worst that will happen is he will throw a knife at you.

Please be aware that when my daughter got the children's menu hibachi shrimp that there were only 2 shrimp, each cut in half for a total of 4 bites of shrimp. She left still hungry!!! Was NOT worth it for us.

When we go to Benihana at home I never come out feeling full. Its just not a lot of food. Particularly for price you pay. Though Teppan Edo' prices don't seem to be much more than Benihana's.

Here's what I find odd about the menu.

Entrees
includes seasonal vegetables with udon noodles and steamed rice

Single

Sirloin Steak $26.95
Ebi - large shrimp $24.95
Tori - chicken breast $20.95

Combination Entrees
Nihonbashi - sirloin steak and chicken breast $28.95
Asakusa - sirloin steak and large shrimp $29.95
Ueno - chicken breast and large shrimp $25.95

Why does a combo of a half portion of steak and a half portion of chicken cost $2 more than the steak by its self. Shouldn't it be somewhere between the two prices like $23.95. :confused3

I have often wondered why they are called Hibachi style restaurants too. We know them as Teppanyaki style restaurants here. Although there are many of these types of restaurants where we live, we are looking forward to Teppan Edo. It's one of the few places that my DD can have steamed white rice, which is her favorite and a staple with almost every meal in Hawaii. She may go through withdrawls, if we can't have steamed white rice at least once during our trip.

As a side note, I never knew that some Teppanyaki style restaurants serve fried rice. Maybe I had not noticed it on the menus here. It never occured to me to have fried rice with a Japanese meal.

Sorry for the mixup on calling it Hibachi. That was the name of the first one we went to and have been calling it Hibachi since. Good to know when you're making a mistake.

Also, a bit disappointing to hear that the kid shrimp meal is only two shrimp. I guess that just means I'll be ordering shrimp and will share. Anyone else have that experience with the kids meal.

As for fried rice, perhaps fried rice is the wrong term. They cook this rice on the grill, but add egg at all the teppanyaki restaurants we have eaten at.

I get the chicken/steak combo at Teppan Edo, and it's one (small, maybe 6-oz?) steak and one chicken breast. It's too much food for me when you add in the veggies/rice/noodles, but it's so good.

1. Its not your fault that someone else started to call it that and now even restaurants themselves have to use the term or people won't understand what you serve.

2. Sorry No idea

3. Yes thats fried rice, but fried rice is not Japanese, but Chinese. Again your local places are bending to their customers expectations and not tradition. Again I use the term tradition with a grain of salt. Teppanyaki style has only been around for 60 years and as traditions go thats a blink of an eye for Japan.

Most of my local Japanese restaurants are run by Chinese so maybe that's why fried rice is always on their menus?

I've only been to Benihana around here and they do it but its now an up charge.

I needed a good laugh today and you provided it with that post . :lmao:
