Thanks in advance for any info, tips or advice you can provide about sailing out of New York. We are considering the Magic 8nt from NY to Bahamas. Do you know if there is a view of the Statue of Liberty on the way out of the port and when arriving back into the city? Any convenient hotels near the port you can recommend?

Thank you so much!

From what I've read you can see it coming in at around 3am but not sure about going out. Am subscribing in hope someone knows

We have sailed out of this port before on the NCL and have always passed the statue of liberty. Starboard when leaving and port when coming back.

I'm not sure if Magic departs from NJ piers or west side of Manhattan? If Manhattan, get ready for some stunning views of city skyline on port side of ship. Then move to starboard for Statue of Liberty. Then go to the highest point on the ship you can when sailing under Verrazano Bridge. It will feel like you can reach up and touch it.

When we sailed the Canadian itinerary on the Magic four years ago, the ship docked on the West side of Manhattan. We enjoyed sail away starboard from deck 4 but your advice sounds great!

No NJ FOR DCL

Don't know if they're sailing from the same port as in 2012, but I have some great shots of the Manhattan skyline, the Statue of Liberty, and the Verrazano Bridge that I took during and after the Sail Away party as we left the port.

Disney leaves from Port of NY and there is a lovely view going out of Miss Liberty. Also, I believe we go under the Verrazano Narrows bridge which is really cool. Last time we went out on NCL it looked like we wouldn't fit under the bridge! Everyone on deck said WHOOOO all at the same time.

Yes, the Magic sails from Pier 88 on the west side of Manhattan, right next to the Intrepid museum. It sails past the Statue on her starboard side and under the Very Narrows Bridge. You can't get out NY harbor without sailing under the bridge. There is a very good thread on the DCL board dedicated to the NY cruises that is very informative.

Thank you all! I greatly appreciate you sharing your experiences and information! I will look for the thread about NY cruises.

We have sailed round-trip out of NYC once (on Carnival) and into NYC once on HAL from Canada. It is a thrilling experience to see the NYC skyline and the Statue of Liberty. We got up at 3 a.m. to make sure we didn't miss it on the way back in too.

We stayed at the Hampton Inn Times Square North after our NCL cruise. We walked there from the port in about 10 minutes, but we're one of those crazy families who does a seven day cruise plus a week in New York with two carry on suitcases and two small backpacks for a family of four. We were quite happy with the Hampton, staff was friendly and the free breakfast was very good. It's an older property but the rooms were recently renovated and very clean. A little worn in spots and quite small; we had to move the night stand to open the sofa bed, but good value for New York. (I think we paid just under $200 per night in March.) Our favourite family hotels are the Doubletree Suites on Times Square and the Homewood Suites just south of Times Square. They're not walkable from port but would be a short cab ride.

It leaves from Manhattan...

This made me laugh. I have driven over that bridge a number of times. Let's just say it was always a white-knuckle experience, especially when they had lane closures for construction.
