We have a local softball event this weekend and I told the girls and their family's to come and enjoy the pool after the games this weekend. Do you think it is rude to ask each family to bring some drinks or snacks to share, or should I be doing it all. We are planning to do this a few more times this summer when we have local tournaments.

Since you're planning to host several times, just mention as part of the invite that they're welcome to bring a snack/drink to share. I would hope that most of the families would offer without being prompted.

Our son's teams and clubs do this all the time. I think it is completely different to do a semi regular kids/family event as a potluck than an adult party. (Especially if this becomes a regular thing)

I would phrase the invite as a snacks potluck get together and say that you'll provide the venue and whatever else you'll have and then ask that everyone bring one item. I know it's annoying but I also divide the list into thirds and ask last names a-h bring drinks, I-r bring chips, s-z bring dessert. Otherwise we've seen parties with one soda bottle but 30 cookie options.

We are planning too buy a bunch of six foot subs for the first day and do burgers and dogs the second day. We think it would be fun for the girls to hang out off the field and for the family's too get to know each other better.

I have hosted my son's high school baseball team this season at least a half a dozen times. Each dinner I used a website and I created a sign up where people could see who signed up for what etc. If you want to pm me I can give you the name if you are interested. It made my life so much easier.

To answer your question though, no I don't feel like it would be rude to ask peoplease to contribute.

Just did this, with our Twins' soccer teams (DH coaches both). It said on the invite that we would provide the pool, dogs, and burgers, and feel free to bring drinks, sides, desserts, or just show up. We ended up with plenty of drinks (mostly water, it was hot), plus some fruit salad, and tons of dessert (mostly cookies, but I now have most of half a sheet cake in my fridge).

It was fun, about 25 13 year olds.

I think that is a really nice idea.
I don't think its rude to make it a pot luck type of party.

Not at all. Go for it! This is pretty common around here so I wouldn't have second thought about it.

I can't imagine any reasonable person getting upset over your request.

We usually just supply the food and then tell them BYOB if they want something other than water or soda. Of course I get off cheaper that way with the way some of my friends can put them away

As long as you specify in the invitation to bring something, I think you're fine.

One side note... make sure the coach is okay with the kids swimming if the tournament is still going on (ie: swim Saturday night w/games on Sunday). We've dealt with coaches who have said "no swimming" or limited (ie: 30 or 60 minutes) the swim time. Other coaches say no problem.
