We are going in 23 Days and this will be our first trip since becoming DVC members!! Woohoo!! Anyway, we are taking my inlaws with us and have not told then that we are DVC members...we just don't want unsolicited advice so we haven't told any family members. My question is, are the rooms marked as DVC member rooms? Is it going to be obvious to them that we are members? Just curious what to prepare for

The key will say DVC Member.

With them being guests, will it say DVC member on theirs as well? Will everyone have a key? I didn't know since we couldn't book tickets through DVC, but we are doing the dining plan.

I could have sworn that our last keys just had "DVC Room Only" on them (October).

I just looked and I was right. I tickle myself sometimes. Anywho...

I guess that still really designates you as being DVC. When we have taken guests, I don't THINK theirs did but I don't have one of theirs here to check. I know my DD7's did. I just looked at hers too.

You could say that you rented points from a member.

They may not even notice what their room keys say. If they ask I would just tell them the truth.

You will also get your "Welcome Home" folder. It will not be obvious once you are in your room - your in-laws will only think what a really nice room this is and how great it was for you to invite them!

Also will depend on where you are staying. At AKV- Jambo there are little plaques on the wall next to the door that have the old DVC logo.

We booked a Jambo GV for our family in 2010 and they had no clue we were DVC members. It does say DVC on every room key except the lead person on the reservation sometimes. I'm not sure why the person who was lead has the DVC left off the room key. It doesn't always happen, but its always baffled me a little why it happens. Anyway my mother noticed on her room key it said DVC and what does it mean? I played dumb since I didn't want to hear the "timeshares are a waste of money" lecture on vacation. The most they knew was we payed for the room directly through Disney and they were happy with that. We later told them a few months after we returned we were DVC members and the attitude changed from "what a waste of money" to "you mean you can get that room again? "

I agree with someone else that if you really don't want to tell them or have a good excuse just say you rented the points and that's why their key cards say DVC

I wouldn't worry about it. All the 'things' that make it 'obvious' (the CM's saying 'welcome home' and such) won't be obvious to them.

When friends and family see and hear about my vacations, you can see in their eyes that they think I have a lot of money to spend on traveling so I find myself always explaining to them that I went on vacation using my points (in other words; not on cash forgetting the fact that it took a lot of cash to buy my direct points ). I am a little amused by the situations people get themselves into and why or why not they share that they have a timeshare.

Are you REALLY asking for advice, or just looking a way to make sure they don't find out?

You probably wouldn't want to know what I would tell my in-laws, but we're 50'ish. I'm grown, with a kid of my own, and I pay my own way. Pretty well too, and they know that. I think you can see where this is headed.

I'd man-up. Tell'em BEFORE-hand, and if I got any lip, I'd graciously UNinvite them. Yes. I would do the exact same thing to my parents too.

You're gonna get caught somewhere during the trip. It may even be something you say that lets the cat out of the bag. Discounts at the counters. It's going to happen. Mark my words.

I'd be absolutely miserable trying to keep it under cover for an entire trip but maybe that's just me. I ain't making MY trip miserable for NOBODY.

I agree with this. The biggest difference that I can think of is that you won't get a room cleaning. Do you have a cover for that? (Something like "We really don't like strangers in our room.")

This, I really love this! I battled with stuff like this for years, also feeling a lot of guilt (sometimes put upon me) because my family/DHs family have not always been able to do what we have.

We're adults, run our own lives, and choose our own paths. I got tired of having to "hide" because we decided to make good decisions in our life and perhaps they didn't .

So, now I basically tell it like it is, harsh or not. Personally I wouldn't offer up the information, but if they ask just tell them the truth. You (just like other DVC members) work hard for your money and how you choose to spend it really isn't anyone else's business. If anyone starts to bug you about your decision, I would just be as nice as possible and say something like "well, thank you for your unsolicited advise, but this was our financial decision...so either you can enjoy your vacation, or next time just stay home"

And we've only done 6 trips in 6 years (sometimes twice/year and sometimes none). I just told my mom and brother, over Xmas, about our upcoming WDW trip and they gave me the response above. Then my mom texts me a picture, today, of a brand new SUV she just bought...fully loaded...3rd one in the same 6 years we've owned DVC. It even has built in TVs in the back of each front headrest and she's 65 and lives alone (and her grand kids are all teens). So, to give her a dose of her own medicine, I texted back..."must be nice...". She replied "I deserve it"...I guess I don't deserve DVC trips. We are trying to add on some points and we won't tell my family about that and they'll never know the difference.

Depends on how long you are staying. On the fourth day, you get your garbages empty and new towels. I found on my last stay I had to empty the kitchen trash more often and mouse keeping makes it easy because they put extra new bags under the current one. It was relatively easy to take the 'used' garbage bag as we were walking out of the room and put it in the trash room as we were going to the parks.

With DVC, if you are staying 7 nights or less, you'll receive trash and towel service on day 4 (check-in is day 1).

If you are staying 8 nights or more, you'll receive full housekeeping on day 4, trash and towel on day 8.

When you go shopping at Downtown Disney, or out to Dinner and your in-laws offer to pay, show your DVC Card and get the 10% off, they may sing a different tune...
