I actually applied for nuc sub school and had an interview with ADM. Rickover in D.C. back in the late 60's. IIRC his office (which was in the old Navy Builiding on the mall) was a long room like 30 x 12 feet and they told me to go in and take a seat in the chair at the desk and when I went in the only furniture was a bookcase, desk and one old chair with a pad on the seat behind the desk at one end of the room, so I just stood in front of the desk and waited. When Rickover came in he went over to the desk and sat in the chair and his first question was why I didn't follow directions. No I didn't get to go submarines.
As a side note I never wanted to fly, but both our sons did as Naval Avatars for their whole life and are now living their dream as one is a back seat WSO (eyes) and the other as a front seat pilot flying the FA-18 Super Hornets. In fact they are both stationed at NAS Lamoore in Ca. and live like 2 miles from each other. Unfortunately they are almost 2,000 miles from us, but that might change when one goes to the five sided building and the other to Navy Test Pilot School here in the next year or so.
