DD is in 5th grade, and I have not seen 1 homework assignment that the teacher has graded. Everything has been "peer" graded. i.e. they swap papers with classmates and grade each others.

I guess it wouldn't be so bad - but I feel "naggy" when I find errors in this, and send it back with a note on it. Apparently - the teacher doesn't even look at the work once it has been peer graded.

Do any schools have policies on this? Do they allow it or not? Do the teachers look at the work if it was peer graded?

I'm just curious on what other schools do.

Thanks!!!

i had a teacher that did that and I hated it! First it's bad enough if you make a mistake, but for everyone to know is horrible. And trust me if the kids are grading the papers, everyone knows. Secondly, I remember how kids that were friends would fix each others papers so they got better grades. I think the teacher and only the teacher (or teacher aide) should be grading papers no matter what grade.

I used to always swap papers with a firend next to me and we would always fix each others wrong answers! I had another friend that would switch correct ones to wrong ones for kids she didn't like!! I do not think that having kids grade other kids papers is the best way to do it!

I don't like it and would mention it to the teacher about how I feel. Grading tests are the teachers jobs not the kids. I can see it happening once in a while for a homework, but, no way should it be done for a test. The grades are for the childs, the parents and the teachers eyes only. I would hate for my child to fail a test and have the other kids know about it and possibly tease her about it.

I'm not crazy about it either. I've seen it done in my 6th grade classrooms. The teacher usually gave them out from a different class to another class (called cores). For example, the core 1 class graded core 3 papers, and such.

I am not in favor of peer grading either. I have a very sensitive daughter that was devestated when she was in about 4th grade. I spoke to a few other parents who also felt the same way, and we went to the teacher about this. She just didn't realize how upsetting it was for some of the kids to have others know their grades. Problem solved for us. If not, the principal was next and on up the line. I remember reading a while ago about a lawsuit that was filed regarding this.(maybe a little too excessive) I don't know how it came out though....they felt it was a privacy issue.
