How much time should one leave in between marathons? I'm registered for MCM which is on October 30th. If I run that, do I have enough time to rest/recover and start training again for Disney in January? MCM would be my 2nd marathon but I have been running for a few years and do have several other races under my belt. Am I just better off registering for the half in January instead? I'm definitely sure I can do that - just not 100% sure on the full.

More than enough time.. Look up Higdon's website a a good discussion of how to set them up. I regularly run a November Mary in front of the Goofy. Have fun... Though you need to decide what race is more important and be willing to sacrifice performance in the other, if required.

Thanks Coach! I'm definitely going for time at MCM - Disney has all the characters and a ton of entertainment along the way :)

Vicky - In 2009 I did the Richmond full on November 14th (I think), and then did Goofy in January. Since I wasn't concerned about time at Disney, I actually let Richmond be my last really long run. I just kept doing 10 mile runs (and another half marathon in December) until Disney.

You should be fine with that much time between marathons. There is a group called Marathon Maniacs - in order to join, you must have done one of the following:

BRONZE LEVEL
1. 2 Marathons within a 16 day time frame.

2. 3 Marathons within a 90 day time frame.

(There are other levels - the madness only goes up from there.)

I've been telling people that I am planning on attempting it at the end of April/early May, with two marathons 8 days apart. I really should sign up for the second race. . . .

I don't plan on really racing either of them, just finishing. And treating both as long training runs for an 8-hour ultra in late May.

As long as you're not trying to race for a PR in both of them, you'll be fine. I've been running one every 3-4 weeks since November, and only one of them was for time. The rest have all been just for fun.

I'm glad someone asked this. I'm planning on running my first in mid October, and then I would like to do Goofy in January. I am worried that I won't know how my body will bounce back from the marathon until October. But I'm young and overall pretty healthy, so it should be okay (right?) as long as I can maintain mileage and work in some back to backs.

Is it true that I could essentially scratch on Goofy at the last second if I needed to and do either the half or the full? I wouldn't expect any money back, I would just not do one race.

Hahaha! Now I'm thinking of the Goofy ... Something about a special medal for the half marathon. Funny the things a shiny piece of metal will make me think of doing :)

roomthreeseventeen - We'll have to see if we can meet up in DC!

We're staying at the Capitol Inn Suites. We were going to stay at the host resort before the whole thing about having no public transportation.

I'm not sure what exactly you're referring to because I'm not doing MCM (I'm going to be a WDW instead!) But make sure where you're staying is on the same Metro line as the MCM start. It's very hard to get between DC metro lines without going all the way downtown then riding back out. And I've heard people say it's a disaster trying to drive to MCM. It's in a bad enough location for traffic without having all of those runners converge!

Oops, I meant for the National Half. I keep getting screwed up since they are both in DC. For MCM we're staying at the Key Bridge Marriott.

I'm considering all my races in later summer/early fall preparation for Goofy. I'm doing each leg of Goofy with different family members though, so I'm not even really racing Goofy. I have my first marathon the last weekend in August, a 1/2 in Mid October, and another Full the weekend after that. I signed up for the 1/2 and full a weekend apart on purpose as a pre-goofy run to see if I totally crash during the marathon, and so I can adapt my Goofy strategy accordingly.

I'm staying with my friend who lives in the Dupont Circle neighbourhood. His place is about a 5K to the start/finish area. I'll probably use the Metro in the morning and a cab afterward.

I thought about the Key Bridge Marriott too. It looks like a nice hotel and not too far from Georgetown.

I'm doing National Half as well. So is Frank.

Vicky - I've run MCM and Disney for the last couple years. You'll have more than enough time to recover. Just make sure to take it easy that first week or two after MCM. Then you basically just want to be in maintaining mode - throw in a couple longer runs and enjoy the holidays - and you'll be good to go.
