Hi,

I am interested in renting DVC point for an upcoming vacation.

I see that some people rent a small number of points. How does that work?

I need to rent points for two familes so it will be a lot of points.

Can I rent, say 100 pts from this person and another 100 from another person?

How does that work with the reservation? It would seem like that could really get messy.

Does anyone know?

Thanks!

You're right, it can get messy. You're really renting a reservation, folks here call it 'renting points' but as a non-member you can't do anything with points. Only members can make reservations with their points.

So, what you'd have to do is have one member make a reservation for part of your trip, and another member make a reservation for another part, etc. Then, all the reservations would have to be linked together, so you wouldn't have to change villas mid-trip. Very complicated.

Wow! That what I was thinking but wanted to confirm....I love to plan but I almost think that would be too much.

If we went more frequently it may be a good challenge though. :yay:

Thanks for the response, Lynne!

Why not just 'rent' all your points from one person? There are plenty of members who rent 100's of points at a time.

Or, since you're have two families, I assume you want to rent different rooms for each family, so 'rent' the points (reservation) for one family from one member, and 'rent' the points (reservation) for the other family from a different member.

Thanks for the response!

Yes, I will probably do that...I was just wondering how it worked when you rent small amounts of points from different people. I do see that people rent say 50 points (or even smaller amounts) and I was just curious how the reservation would work.

We had kind of a scary first experience with renting a reservation last year. I'm not sure this is a topic for this board but here goes. We rented from someone who owned thru Interval Int'l. The person transferred his reservation to us for a particular week at VWL on a guest certificate (I think that is what it was called).

Apparently, he was not supposed to "sell" his reservation to us...and when I called DVC member services to confirm that the reservation was transferred, they asked me a lot of questions, then Interval Intl called me, and eventually they locked his account.

We were still able to have the reservation but it was a real nightmare and very tenuous. I was very relieved to be in the room that first night...

Thanks again for your response!

Often, people renting small amounts of points will end up transfering them to another member. Then they can be combined with the other members points. Also 50 points is adequate for a short trip in a studio at certain times of year.

BTW, be aware that things have changed and member services will no longer speak to renters... just FYI.

This should be cross posted on the thread where someone was thinking of renting out their II exchange. This is REAL proof that it is not allowed!

Well, that's interesting...thanks for that info...how does a rentee verify that the reservation is made?

I guess the renter would email/mail the rentee something from Disney.

I have heard that before but I did call last fall and was able to speak with someone.

I know there's a lot of trust involved in renting points.

Thanks again for the info.

yep - a faxed or mailed copy of disney's confirmation letter is pretty much what most renters have to go on...

There is no way for the non-owner to confirm the reservation except maybe until a day or two before. Then you have to call the resort directly. Even then, some people have stated that they were then transfered to Member Services who would not talk to them.

Deb,

I understand what you are saying but, honestly, I did speak with member services before our Jan 08 vacation...it was some time in the fall and on more than one occasion.

It may have been because it was connected with Interval International...on a guest certificate?

I don't know, but honestly, I did speak with them...and they couldn't have been nicer or more helpful.

Thanks!

Karen

Yes, but you were doing that under the guise of an Interval International trade, which DOES allow the trader to speak with MS. They would not have spoken to you if you were renting a DVC reservation from a DVC member. The difference here is the II trade.
