Hi everyone, I just have a question about the beach at Fort Wilderness Resort..

Has anyone been to the resort this year and is the beach part of it open yet?? We went last year and we were told we could not go in the water at all. When I explained the kids just wanted to see the white sand and find shells they said that is fine as long as you dont go in. When I asked why the two men just beat around the bush and told me that they could not answer that we just needed to make sure we stayed on the sand. Anyone have any ideas about why this is and why the waterpark there was shut down??

The lake at FW has been closed for several years. It has something to do with algi (sp). I don't think there are plans to reopen it for swimming. We still like to sit on the beach at night.

We went in April and the kids played along the shore line but did not get into the water. Last year we were told it was "alligator mating season" and they could not guarantee our kids safety. I heard River Country was closed due to a fungus in the water, same water so I am assuming is the same reason as in all the years we have been going, we have never seen one alligator, much less two mating.

It's not just FW. Disney does not allow swimming in the lakes at any of the resorts. There are dangers from algae, alligators, snakes, fungus, bacteria, etc, etc, etc. I'm sure they don't want to be held responsible if somebody gets sick (or bitten!)

Thats too bad..would have been cool to show my girls what it was like all the times I visited fw growing up :( . We are leaving to to go there in three weeks so at least now I will be able to let them know why they cant go. Thank you so much everyone for your help.

Glad I heard this now - DS was hoping to "go to the beach" but I'm pretty sure he'll be ok with advance notice.
