Question Regarding Rides

My mom has polymyositis ( inflammation of many muscles) and is also overweight. She uses a walker, can walk and stand in line (maybe not for an hour but a normal wait is fine), however she has a problem once she is seated getting back up (legs are very weak) she can't get the leverage necessary. She also can't lift her legs and push herself to get into moving vehicles or vehicles with higher sides (just remember rides like Spaceship Earth and Journey into Imagination). I know they used to stop these rides for people to get on, but does anyone know if they have cars that don't have the high step required to get into them? I know I have probably worded this horribly but I want to make sure her trip is enjoyable and not just spent watching her 20 month old grandson while everyone else rides the rides. She is going to be getting a DAS, but I don't think that is the answer for all of her problems. Thanks for all your help in advance

There are descriptions of how to access the ride vehicles in the disABILITIES FAQ sticky near the top of this forum. Beginning on post #18. You can also search online to find pictures or youtube videos of specific ride cars.

For the most part, rides with a moving walkway can be slowed on request -- make sure to mention this when you first enter the queue and to each CM along the way, as sometimes the control is located at the exit rather than where you get on. Note that the Peoplemover and PeterPan cannot be slowed or stopped.

Regarding the DAS...if you haven't already done so, you might want to check out the WDW Disability Access Service Card sticky near the top of this forum. The current program changed last fall and is different than the old GAC. You have mentioned mobility/stamina/endurance type issues for your mom, which will not qualify for the DAS; I don't know if she has other needs as well that might qualify for the DAS. You might consider using a "rollator" which is a walker with a built-in seat, or a wheelchair she can push like a walker -- either option will provide her a seat in lines if it is too much standing.

Enjoy your vacation!
