Question Regarding Renting Points

My sister and her husband are going to visit WDW in Jan of '09. After one night at the ASMo with me and then transferring to SSR for the remainder of her trip, she knows that when she goes she wants to rent points. So, at looking at things, I think the safest bet would be for someone to transfer their points to me and then I make the reservation for my sister. Currently, I have no points, not until August. So, if I do rent points from someone and make her reservation tomorrow, do I need to worry about anything? She would really like to make the reservation at SSR, that is my home resort.

One other question, if I get points from someone whose home resort is something other than SSR, I have to go with their points, correct, meaning the 7 month mark for reservations.

Is there anything else I need to be concerned with?

Transfered points retain their home resort and UY. You are limited to 1 transfer per UY.

If I were you, I would post a "Points Transfer wanted for SSR" on the Rent/Trade Board. Then you will have the 11 month window for SSR and be in control of the reservation. Remember you are only allowed one transfer in or out of your account per Use Year, so make sure you get enough points to complete the reservation. If, you get SSR points you have the 11 month window, just as if they are your points. You can bank transferred points, if you get more than you should need. This way you are not renting.

If you decide to rent, then deal with a SSR owner and get the 11 month window that way. I would check references.

You realize those are the points you would normally use for a Jan 09 ressie anyway...right?

Your August 08 points would be available for ressies from August 1, 2008 - July 31, 2009

That's right, and you can make those ressies NOW!

Yes, but I want MY points. These points for the transfer are for my sister. She wants to rent points, and I think it would be more reassuring if I have control of the points than some stranger. We are looking at using our points in December of in May. So, I don't want her to have mine. She needs to rent her own.

How do I check references?

The first thing I'd check on a transfer is whether or not the person actually owns a DVC account. For WDW resorts, you can do that by clicking on this link and entering their name: http://officialrecords.occompt.com/wb_or1/or_sch_1.asp

You'll obviously need the name (s) that are on the deed. You only need one name, but it will have to be spelled correctly. Don't use commas, and remember that hyphenated names are listed ONLY by the last part of the name. So if you enter Smith-Jones, you'll get nothing, but if you just enter Jones, you'll get it.

If their account is at Vero Beach, that would be the Indian River County (FL) website -- probably either the tax collector or appraiser's office. I'm not sure what county in SC HHI is in.

Beyond that, you could ask for the names and contact info for someone they've done a transaction with. Some people offer eBay feedback as a reference. There are lots of things you could check.
