I will also be returning to the ship soon. I worked on the disney wonder April 2002-November 2003. I worked with the 3-4's and 5-7's. I have yet to be assigned an age group. I hope to work with the older kids this time around.
Just to reassure everyone, before the guest arrive, actually while you are having your safety drill, we have a staff meeting letting all counselors know if there are children with peanut allergies, severe ones, just so we don't eat these things in our cabins before coming to work. We also go over any special needs or kids having birthdays. This way we are prepared for the upcoming cruise.
If kids seem a bit unsure about coming to the club or lab, have them tour the area when they get on the ship. Also that first night is sort of an introduction to the program, where they can meet the counselors and other friends. Usually it's hard on the shorter crusies because just as they start to feel comfortable, it's time to leave. But all the counselors are very well trained and would be happy to help any child. I know there were several children that were my buddy for the cruise, it made them feel comfortable when they came in, I would make them my special helper. I will never forget these two twin boys that were from New Jersey, they came at christmas time and I was missing my family. They didn't want to say and I talked them into staying and helping me, they had a blast and later sent me a christmas card with pictures, it's something I will cherish for years to come.
That's exactly why I am going back, for those experiences. You can't get it anywhere else.
