We are travelling with DH's family this year, and everything has been booked for months, including BA flights. However, she and her DH have split and he won't be coming now.

The flights have been paid in full, and we also paid extra for allocated seats. I know we won't be able to get anything back if we cancel, and not sure if it sounds selfish but given we have paid for pre-booking the row of seats, there is a chance we will at least fly with a spare seat next to us.

What I was unsure about was the ability to claim back the taxes on the flight. Do you have to wait for the flight to actually happen and then claim afterwards, or would we need to cancel the flight now to claim them back?

you would need to cancel now to claim back the taxes other wise it will be down as a no show and i dont think you can claim anything back

you might be able to claim it off travel insurance but because of a split up not too sure

As said cancel ASAP to claim taxes back.
Chances are they will resell the seat and you will have someone with you. My Brother once got to the airport, should have been 6 of them going on a business/pleasure trip to Vegas. Got to airport and one of the party cancelled last minute. My Brother asked the staff if it was possible to keep the seat for them to spread out, even though my Brother had paid for all 6 seats they could only keep 5, 1 was sold to a standby passenger.
