Good evening,

DD (11) was at DTD last week while traders were there. There was a couple there trading and DD wanted one of their pins. I admittedly don't know what I'm doing regarding pin trades & DD wanted this pin because she loves that particular character.

Anyway, this couple decided she could have it if DD bought a particular pin from the store to trade ($14.95). I let her make the choice but really thinking she was getting the short end of the trade. The pin is in fair condition but the back looks different from all of the other pins she has. I told her it was most likely a fake but she was ok with it because she thought it was so cute & she wanted it.

So, my question is.. is this a common occurrence at DTD? These people were not particularly friendly to any of the kids looking to trade. What am I missing? Thanks!

your not missing anything...a small majority of the traders at DTD are a bunch of snakes looking to have anyone buy them a pin so they can put it on Ebay....do I sound bitter?????.....nahhh...but there are some great and honest traders :thumbsup2 ....you just have to be careful !

What pin did she trade for? You can see if there are known scrappers by visiting pinpics.com and doing a search for the pin.

I looked there after reading through some other threads but I couldn't find the pin. Its Dumbo & Mrs. Jumbo with a yellow balloon shaped liked a Mickey head. Thanks!

Ah, I didn't think of good old ebay!

That's happened to us too. My DD who was 2 going on 3 at the time wanted to trade a pin and was told the same thing. Needless to say, she didn't get the pin. I think it's a shame that they are allowed to do that. To me IMO, that defeats the whole purpose of Pin Trading. That's Pin Buying.

First of all, don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to defend the sharks or bottomfeeders at DTD. And there are many that do not fall into that category. However, as someone who has way too many traders, and even more in my collection, I only have 14 pins I want. So 99.99% of the people who want to trade with me when I'm at DTD don't have something on my wish list. And I don't do the Hidden Mickey thing. So I try to trade even for even. If you want an LE 500 from me, give me an LE 500. If you don't have one, then you can buy one in the store. To me that sounds fair. It replaces the pin in the pin bag...it doesn't go on e-bay. Who knows, maybe my next trip that pin which you can't buy anymore will be someone elses' deepest desire!

I understand that alot of traders are legitimate and are only trying to even up what they are trading ...however it's unfortunate that "a few bad apples spoil the bunch" and we all know who they are.....;) It is so unfortunate that there are some at DTD that are using it as a place to get "free" pins that can be turned around and sold for 100% profit on Ebay while handing their "LE junks" to innocent kids and not knowing adults who only want to trade...... :confused3

I can't seem to find it on pinpics at all so unfortunately I don't have any information for you. I don't see too many Dumbo pins tho. :)

You're right, and every time someone tells me that I just shake my head and say no thanks and walk away. If I don't have anything you want in my collection just tell me that and I'll leave.

We also try to trade evenly, LE500 for an LE500, 100 Mickey for 100 Mickey, HM for HM, etc etc but sometimes it doesn't work out that way. I know we've taken LE1000s for LE750 or LE500s before but that doesn't mean we will do it every time. :)

here's your pin...

It's Pin 18191: Magical Musical Moments - Baby Be Mine, and is kind of en "error" pin, the balloon should say "Baby Mine". IMO, that song & that scene are some of the all-time best *ever*.

I have to agree with you - the traders at DTD need to be removed. I was so upset by the way one of the men masde this little girl cry I went and complained to a manager who told me there was nothing they can do about and that the DTD managers wish they didnt have to allow them to be there. I mean what kind of person tells a 8 year old that her pins are worthless when all she wanted to trade was for one hidden mickey pin that he bought for $1?

I think what Disney should do is not allow the pin traders to stand outside of the pin stores and tell people go buy me this and I will give you that... and if they get caught doing something like that Disney should ban them from trading on Disney property for a few months the first time then like a year the next... like a 3 strikes your out rule. They just ruin it for everyone.

I have two thoughts on the people who say "buy me a pin for a trade you want".
1. My son is in the Marines. I had the Mickey with a Marine pin and wore it to his graduation but it fell off my shirt and I lost it. I went to these people and one of them did tell me to buy a $16.95 pin for it. I thought it was well worth it since I really wanted this pin.
2. Disney doesn't allow anyone to go on property and sell their pins or any other Disney collectible. By trading for a new pin these people are in essence selling their pin. OK, not really but they could take the pin and receipt and return the pin anywhere. When I traded my Marine pin I was told to leave the pin in the bag with the reciept.
It came in handy for me when I wanted a pin that was special to me, but I do get angry when I see these people "trading" a $14.95 or higher pin for a rack or lanyard pin to someone who doesn't really know much about pins.
I do think Disney should do something about these people, but honestly, what could they do?

I'm glad you got your Marine Mickey pin and please tell your DS Thank You for protecting our country. :) If I did actually buy a pin and have someone tell me to give them the receipt I would refuse. They can have the pin but not the bag/receipt, heck they can have the bag but not the receipt. Too much opportunity for trouble there.

I don't have any problem with buying a pin to trade with someone at DTD. But, I am cautious when I do it. Unfortunately, there are some real cads out there that ruin the pin trading fun for others -- especially kids. You just have to be very careful in who you deal with. I for one hope they don't do away with the pin traders at DTD. However, I would like them to try to monitor it in a way that weeds out some of the jerks. Not sure exactly what they could do, but I'm sure Disney could figure something out.

I agree, I would NOT give them the receipt. I am pretty sure I know the party, and he has a bad habit of ripping people off to get pins in exchange for his scrappers that he has also been heard to brag about getting straight from china, and then selling on e-bay, and even worse he has bragged about the "Idiots" (I am quoting him)that give him the receipt so he can take the pin back and get the cash.

This guy needs to be GONE no doubt!!

I used to run the old pin trading booth at the Contemporary Resort when I was in the Disney College Program.

In my opinion, it is always a bad experience trading with locals, or 'pin sharks', as we called them. Most of them are greedy and only out for themselves, though I did have a good experience trading with a fellow for a Steamboat Willie pin no longer made. However, most of them want far more than what the pins are worth.

On the other hand, if it was what she wanted and she's happy with it, then by all means let her enjoy it and don't worry about it.

If you are going to get serious about pin trading, def do your research. There are only a few collections out there that really have value ... I think a lot of folks forgot to just enjoy the ride while trading. It's a great deal of fun looking at all the old and new pins. By all means enjoy it and have fun !
