We have finally decided to look into buying DVC. We would really love to have VWL as our home resort but wonder if it would be better to buy one of the other resorts with the great point deals out now and then add on points for VWL later. What would you all suggest?

Thanks

It is well worth taking the time to read the following by DVC Mike regarding choosing a Home Resort

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2152512

Most will advise you to buy where you'd most love to stay, but even better advice maybe to buy where you will not mind having to stay if all you could book is your HR during your owner's priority booking window (11mos through 7mos+1day before check-in date you'd want)

jmho, I'd shop the resale market for a small VWL contract ( you can buy into DVC via resale for less than the minimum number of points that Disney will require if you direct purchase through them ) and then you can do add-on contracts when you want - addons can be purchased directly from Disney once you are a member at any resort(s) you want for 25 pts minimum with cash or 50 pt minimum if you want Disney's financing.

Also, for current DVC pricing & incentives that may be available go to

Best wishes on your DVC purchase :goodvibes

Keep in mind that you can't combine points from two different home resorts until the 7 month window.

If you want to stay at the VWL most of the time, the "great deals" out there may not mean much to you if you are "stuck" somewhere you do not want to be.

VWL is one of the smallest WDW DVC resorts. Some members will get reservations by booking at 7 months, but most who try will not.

Only you can decide what is more important to you - saving money up front or knowing you can stay at the VWL for your vacations if you book during the home resort priority booking period.

Only you can determine price vs where you want to stay. There are some great VWL resale deals out there so if that is where you would like to stay why wouldn't you go for VWL?

You could get SSR maybe for a little cheaper but if it was me I would go for what I wanted for the small point spread. We own SSR through DVC and resale, at the time we did both there was a larger difference in price than this is now. I like SSR and went with the don't mind staying if I have to route like 5fordiz mentions.
