I thought I remembered reading on the "selling your gold " pages

in order to test some jewelry to see if its real hold it up to a magnet

if it sticks to it its not real since that means thesres metal in it

however if it is real it wont stick

is this a good way of testing it

I have an old jewelry box from my DMIL who passed away that's filled with all sorts of broken chains mismatched earrings

and some nice pieces that aren't my style

so before I send things in I was wondering if I understood the post right and if not could someone please set me right

thanks all

Don't send it anywhere! You need to find a local reputable jeweler to buy it. They'll be happy to help you sort out fake from real gold.

I inherited some GAWD-awful pieces from an aunt and called a local jeweler who had me bring it all down. He sorted, tested and gave me a price. You may want to go to a few jewelers for pricing but I only went to this one since a friend had done business with him for years and he had a good rep.

A magnet won't stick to real gold, but a magnet won't stick to silver or copper or bronze or pure aluminum either. There are a bunch of other metals they also won't stick to, I think nickel is one of them and nickel is a metal commonly used in jewelry. DH uses a magnet test to tell if scrap metal is worth taking to the scrapper or not - if a magnet sticks he puts it out for the recycle if it doesn't then he'll scrap it himself. So, anyway, the point of my post is a magnet is not a good way to tell if your jewelry is real or not.
